Midseason Thoughts on Chad Ryland So Far

We had to move up from 120 to 112 doncha know to grab this guy. Foolish beyond belief.

Strong kicking legs aren’t hard to find.

Its the AB (anti-Bill) squad running amok having their "I told ya so" moments
well if the BB worshipper groups does not allow any criticism of the horrendous special teams draft picks and free agent signings in the first place while the teams lacks talent at actually important positions then they may need to rethink their blind defense of any moves bb makes.

using a fecking fourth rd pick on a K this K better get great or it's a waste of resources and another bust.
You can just find kickers as udfa or sign them cheap. Instead the pats should use these picks and try to draft as many wr's as possible so the chance of finally hitting on someone is higher. Because WR is actually moving the needle, a position of high value.
Addtionally the special teams unit isn't great which makes the spent ressources even worse.

A thread on Chad ryland is a good idea. A thread about his misses is a topic worthy of discussion. A thread about how has hasn't lived up to the fourth round pick is a good idea. All great threads or posts in that thread.

No one is going to disagree.

Then look around - I don't know what board you have been reading lately... There is nary a thread that doesn't abound with criticisms of BB, the roster, the coaching etc... even the staunchest BB defenders have said as much.

Nobody likes 2-8. Nobody.

Doesn't mean running around saying I told ya so by necroing old thread is a good thing.

In light of what Ian asked - not to do that - multiple threads have been necroed to do just that.

Don't whine about it to me when they get locked. Deal with it. I don't want to hear it. Put it in a new thread like you were asked to.

Ryland is 12/17 on field goals, good for a 71% clip. For reference, Bill the GM picked up Shayne Graham off the scrap heap to fill in for an injured Stephen Gostowski in 2010. Graham hit 12/12...for the math impaired, that's a 100% conversion rate. The point is, Bill likely could have gotten someone off the scrap heap to make 71% of his FG and not wasted a 4th round pick on a ****ing kicker.
Only two kickers in the NFL have missed more FG than Ryland - Graham Gano and Brett Maher.

Most of the rest of Graham's career was being cut off squads and replaced by better kickers. He lucked into a good year filling in for us and then couldn't turn it into a full-time job anywhere in the NFL. He's really not the poster boy for why you go with an undrafted guy as your kicker.

As for Ryland, who knows. Maybe it's just a rough rookie year and he settles down to be a good one. Maybe not. But I don't think there was a starting QB in the 4th round this year who was the savior we need instead of the kicker we got. Of all the things to get upset at, this one seems minor to me.

Pretty good draft overall, though. Baringer is a good punter. Gonzo, White and Douglas are good players.
Keion White has 9 tackles in 10 games, 0 sacks, 0 forced Fumbles, and has been completely invisible for the last month. Chase Winovich was more productive in his rookie season through 10 games. I don't understand how so many people were on the Keion White Hall of Fame Train earlier this season...

the fact remains; Graham was signed off the street and was a better kicker than Ryland this far. it's just another example of a head scratching draft pick from Bill the GM.

Ok. It doesn't bother me.

My problem is that he didn't draft a tackle with any of the picks well before that when OT was the biggest need going into the draft.

I still have hopes for him. With our st being as unreliable as they are you need a guy that can get touchbacks regularly. Which i have no idea why we were letting the colts return kicks yesterday, ended up costing us 3 key points.

while i agree, I want to point out that it is annoying when you criticize the positional value of a K and so you are upset about the selection which is completely fine and reasonable in my opinion but the IBWT guys are shutting down any kind of critics even if you have strong arguments for it.

I agree. Hes not a bust quite yet.

Believe me when I say IBWT guys aren't shutting anything down.

I am a BB supporter.

And no one can stem the flow of vitriol that has been leveled at him this year. It is literally everywhere.

Enjoy the rest of your day, PFFOS

i agree, that's must be tough after so many years of success
Enjoy the rest of your day, PFFOS
thanks you too

Strong leg...but yeah needs to get his accuracy up more.....

Strong (but erratic) leg but what about that short kickoff yesterday that led to a big return?

Most rookies are inconsistent, especially kickers. |We need to get used to that given the number of new, young players that will be on the team next year. On a positive note, this was a good season to get a new kicker broken in. Ghost had to take his lumps on a good team which is harder.

Hard to tell if that was a planned short kick to force a return or if ryland just didn’t get enough on it.
