This presents an excellent opportunity to abolish big-time collegiate sports altogether. Why not have a feeder system for the NFL which does not involve our educational system in such pretense and hypocrisy as this practice of keeping "student athletes" around as pets for the actual students does? The games would be great, the criteria for admission to the league would be rational for the league's purpose, the criteria for admissions to college would (at least to a greater extent: I am sure they'll retain a tendresse for other sorts of unqualified applicants) be rational for the college's alleged purposes, and a degree of honesty in this matter might help our institutions of "higher education" to begin their restoration to their actual, original purpose: education.

I can field this one:

The top tier football schools make more money than god with the current arrangement.

Jeepers. This "argument" as to the educational implications and merits of college athletics is so dumb that I'm just gonna let it sit there and prattle for itself. Aww, it's drooling, poor thing.

Perhaps if high profit is now the purpose of our institutions of higher learning, they might consider dabbling in prostitution, or buy a truckload of fentanyl down at the border. Why, the possibilities are nearly endless. How about kidnapping for ransom, what with all those rich kids hanging around with nothing to do? There's an educational winner for ya.

As for "fielding this one," maybe you should had a Redbull or something first.

You're comparing college football to engaging in prostitution, dealing fetanyl and kidnapping for ransom.

I get you don't like college sports, but that's pretty idiotic.

No, I am offering a simple reductio. If one adopts the OP's criterion by which activities on college campuses are to judged as to their worthiness - his criterion being (solely: he offered NO other criterion) that the activity earns a lot of money - that then equally justifies such things as prostitution, drug-dealing or anything else similarly lucrative. His point is thus shown to be patently absurd. Any rational person would reject his argument on its face, as I do, demonstrating, of course, that you are wrong in your assertion re my view on colleges-as-pimps, etc. I assumed all this would be obvious, frankly. I am happy to discuss these serious matters in a serious manner - I have done so many times, once in formal debate - but I will not be waylayed by horseshit arguments offered up in macho pose.

Yes. And the revenue generating sports, typically men’s basketball and football, subsidize all the rest, which are disproportionately title IX female sports.

There is absolutely nothing in his statement that would lead an intelligent, reasonable person to conclude he meant colleges should violate the law as well as violate basic human rights to pursue profit.

Textbook strawman. If you tried that in a formal debate, you'd be laughed off the stage. And you know it.

This is getting so much worse for Michigan. The scale of just what their operative was apparently doing is insane.

This is really interesting/funny if true:

Michigan's "Blue Light" special:

Wearing sunglasses for a night game? Sorry, can’t resist.

What’s been found is tip of the iceberg. Industrial scale cheating that paid big dividends. Total buy in by the coaching staff. OC and DC guys 100 percent complicit.

Recently, a former co-OC had a police raid, his computer confiscated, and job termination resulted.

If this were almost any other program, the media would be on this more.

Stevie Wonder could have seen this coming.
