We are in the happy and now foolish habit of assuming that the purpose of games during the season is get qualified and ready to compete for the playoffs, ultimately for the championship.
That is no longer the purpose of this season: obviously. We have no shot. The purpose of this season is: 1) to evaluate the players and staff we have presently on the team/roster, Mac included. We evaluate them not on how they might help this season but on their possible value next year and in years following. 2) Before we to take on other players, before we trade anybody away or trade for anybody, before we even begin to consider what roster-building strategy to adopt overall; we must relieve the present GM of his duties, identify his replacement, and let that replacement begin to work. A lot of speculation on whether the Pats might dump Bill this season (either as GM or altogether) seems to bear on whether doing so might hurt Bill's feelings or upset a few staff members. Who cares? Bill must be gotten out of the GM job now, so that the work of rebuilding - work for which he is demonstrably not qualified - can begin. 3) The final task this season is to begin the work of identifying and acquiring the next head coach. While I personally would not mind giving Bill another season or two as HC, I think there is little to no chance Bill would agree to surrendering the GM job and would resign both jobs instead. So the Krafts - with the services of whatever consultants might be helpful - must begin the search for a new HC as well, and there is no time like the present for it.
We know what must be done. Let's quit wringing our hands and get on with it.
