Because they were probably reasonably sure no one else would draft him. I'm sure it was close. The hefty stipend they gave him suggests they knew his value and wanted to be sure of bagging him as a free agent. So they got this guy and kept a draft pick. They could have drafted him, and they might do so if they had then the confirmation of his potential that they have now, but they didn't have to. So I'd call how they handled it a success. Why wouldn’t they have used a 7th on him?
Worthy of a roster spot > worth of a 7th round pick
If Mac was out there for sake of argument, then our 1s would have been out there. So it would have been a much better showing.. anyway hard to get to up or down on a meaningless pre season game. I'll say this though.. there are just some guys that come around and even before they have done anything in the league they appear to be special... Keon white is one and IMO Cunningham feels that way to me. Cunningham is representing what the league has become now. Athletes at the QB position.Stupid posters posting stupid things. It gets old but never changes here. Zappe goes against Houston's #1 d with our 2/3rd string o-line and 2nd string offense and gets eaten alive and Zappe sucks. Cunningham comes in against Houston's 3rd string defense and looks "amazing". Now posters want to get rid of Zappe and make Cunningham the starter. Lol, how do you think Mac would have done in the same situation? I hope better but imagine pretty much the same. It was the first preseason game, let us see what happens the next couple of weeks before we run anyone out of town, or promote Malik to Canton.
Brady was also nearly cut in camp..people forget thatWe don't know that I didn't think Brady was anything special when we Drafted him.
Yep. And I'm sure many said then, when people commented on Brady's merits, that we were "getting ahead of ourselves." "Playing it safe" and "settling for mediocrity" sometimes represent the same approach, particularly when a team has needs as broad as this one. Sometimes you have take a little flier on matching up potential with needs.Brady was also nearly cut in camp..people forget that
Perfectly said!! I believe sometimes is people refuse to believe what they witness and go against the consensus. I like to think I'm a positive and realistic patriots fan and poster. I can see the big picture. Mac is on a mission this season. We will have a successful season and be competitive like we always were. Ultimately that will force ownerships hand. Cunningham is what the 2023 and beyond NFL is all about Athletes at the position. Keep him here anyway we can. Develop him.. because I feel there is something special in this kid.Yep. Not sure what you are trying to get at with all that, but the argument is teams will be fighting to grab him off waivers; the same teams who didn’t find him worthy of a 7th round pick.Because they were probably reasonably sure no one else would draft him. Yes -- he was beaten out by Michael Bishop for QB3. But somehow that whipping boy GM Belichick protected him on the roster as an unprecedented (as far as I know) QB4.In his rookie season TB12 was saying he almost was cut..

Nothing that happened Thursday changed any evaluators opinion of him.
I know it’s new and exciting to you because you had no clue who he is, but he was evaluated thoroughly before that draft and zero of 32 said “oh my God this kid can run QB draws in the 4th quarter of a preseason game against guys who won’t be in the league, his did we miss him?”
And FYI they gave him $200,000 out of a 182,000,000 cap number. It’s the equivalent of a rounding error. Terez Hall gets 500k to be on IR

Absolutely agree!! With that and having the foresight as BB does. He didn't sign Cunningham to have him in for a tryout.. they get to see what he can do on a daily basis. I believe they stash him on the roster and develop him.. BB knows that if Mac plays himself into a contract it likely won't be in NE.Yes -- he was beaten out by Michael Bishop for QB3. It's fair to credit BB with sheer good luck by picking Brady in the 6th round. But keeping him as an unprecedented 4th QB? That shows foresight.
Mac will only price himself out of new england if he is beaten out by another qb, or isn't that good. If he wins the starting job and doesn't suck, they will pay him.If Mac was out there for sake of argument, then our 1s would have been out there. I honestly and truly believe my guy Mac is going to price his way out of NE.. he will have a great year, and he likely won't take a home team discount. Why should he when Daniel jones is getting 40/mill.
So then again going forward if we can keep Cunningham around and develop him.. I'm just saying...
Everything is in play starting this season.Mac will only price himself out of new england if he is beaten out by another qb, or isn't that good. If he wins the starting job and doesn't suck, they will pay him.
I believe they won't pay Mac what the salary of good QB play commands.. that's around 40 Million.. BB didn't want to pay goat 25 million.. besides Mac is part of the new generation of players.. they are not taking discounts I don't blame him.. so as I was saying good QB play commands a price tag I don't believe Ownership is willing to pay.Mac will only price himself out of new england if he is beaten out by another qb, or isn't that good. Hey, if the team performs and Mac looks like a top 5 or 10 QB maybe he would be paid. Based on what we've seen so far, that's not the case. Is he Andy Dalton. or Alex Smith or can he be better. We'll see.I believe they won't pay Mac what the salary of good QB play commands.. that's around 40 Million..
