Can the Line hold up?

Lets see... I have these guys penciled in as the starters

LT: Trent Brown
LG: Cole Strange
C: David Andrews
RG: Michael Onwenu
LT: Conor McDermott

They will have some trouble against a few of those fronts... The O Line, once stabilized last year, was middle of the pack overall... But that was with Patricia messing around with the line... If Klemm is better than Patricia, we could quite possibly see line play thats vastly superior to last years squad...

Mac's strengths are getting the ball out quick and accuracy. So your right we don't have chase and Higgins on the outside so he won't need to make those deep drops. The play is already decided at the line.. Unless Mac checks out the play.. having a guy like rham takes so much pressure off Mac. We have an offense that can frustrate an attacking defense.. we rely on short, intermediate throws and the run game. That will test a defenses discipline like eagles who want to rush upfield. That will force them to play honest and gives us an advantage so to speak.
Ty Montgomery's injuries are very much related to the perceived effectiveness of the O-line. Having an effective third down back and a reliable slot receiver goes a long way toward minimizing the need for a dominant line.

I'm beginning to think ty Montgomery is just a player who's injury prone. I really had high hopes for him. I don't believe he's returned to practice yet.

Me too the Pats have had many experiences with those and he's not exactly spring chicken either he's 30.

Yeah.. his skill set would be so dynamic in this offense. I want to say he makes the team.. being that he's on a cheap deal.. but then again BB is a master of managing the roster spots so he may be on the outs?

Looking at our own front 7.. pretty dam good. Our line has struggled with them.. I can only imagine when we see the jets! I have the same starters as you. However seen as how ownenu is still on the PUP and hasn't participated in camp drills. He likely will start the season there.

Not to be cynical but at this point I'm not sure most of them can stand up.

Great post and topic. Yes, like most years here I expect OL to be a weakness and concern. I don’t feel like BB did a good job drafting wise or FA in regards to bringing in good solid OL. Trent Brown underwhelmed last year and doesn’t seem to play with any passion/fire out there….he’s tying up a lot of cap money as well

Here’s a good article on OL for this year…..going to be rocky for Mac and O…..

I don’t feel like BB did a good job drafting wise or FA in regards to bringing in good solid OL.
A myriad of reasons for this. The complete confidence in Dante meant for decades, really, he ran the show. His first retirement brought in someone not up to the challenge.

Dante’s second—and final—retirement had a promising young duo: Popovich and Bricillo. It was my understanding they worked well together, though Popovich was the more senior in knowledge.

When the coronavirus caused lockdown and fear, Popovich made the unusual decision not to receive the experimental jab, which is not a vaccine. That only highlights his strength of character, conviction, intelligence, and prudence.

Not good for his professional career, though, which had only recently begun to solidify. He was forced out.

Bricillo ran the show and, after a bit of a rough initial go, performed admirably. He went to Oakland, er, Los Vegas with the former OC.

That’s when Belichick’s inattention to the OL became apparent.

Karras was gone as a FA pickup by the Bengals. He was versatile as a high level center/guard backup and good starter at both. We should have brought someone in. As Captain Stone first pointed out, relying on Thanksdad, which Belichick unquestionably did, turned out to be an error.

My choice was the guy they brought in for a visit, Ryan Bates from the Bills. But we did not even offer. Chicago did, but the Bills matched.

That season we witnessed James Ferentz being put on skates by the Jets Quinnen Williams.

Then, even a more grievous mistake, was the apparently not well thought out decision to give Patricia the duties of OL coach even after he was named OC. He was backed up by a former marginal player with next to no coaching experience who was on the team solely for the minority fellowship positions each franchise must set aside.

So last year was a disaster. It started with the desire to try to fit a square peg in a round hole by installing a wide zone approach that necessarily puts a premium on smaller, more athletic guys. Ahem, Trent Brown and Mike Onwenu, anyone? Those are power gap players par excellence.

Then the curious decision to swap tackles caused the lifelong LT Isaiah Wynn to lose interest and become disgruntled. If you don’t agree with me, realize he was a vetted Dante player.

I am interested to see his progress now that he is with the Dolphins. He could very well be their LT if Armistead goes down as he has every year.

I could make other complaints. The year they drafted Bust Harry, I was pushing for Dalton Risner, who had five position versatility. And this year they needed to draft a developmental LT, even if it was a late rounder Jake Witt instead of sixth-rounder Ameer Speed.

Or, better yet, not trade up with the Jets for Chad Ryland. We had 120 and 184, which we traded for 112. If we had stayed put perhaps we could have had both the Maryland kicker and a potential NFL starting LT in Carter Warren, who would have been someone our newly high paid OL coach, Adrian Klemm, could have worked with.

I really haven't been following things deeply the last month or two. What did I miss in regards to Calvin Anderson being on the NFI? Any idea why he is? I feel like he could be passable at RT if healthy.

Agreed that this entire line depends on getting the good Trent Brown, and that makes me uneasy considering how unreliable he has been. The alternatives at LT are Reiff (you could do worse, but definitely would not be an ideal option) and Calvin Anderson which again, his availability is a mystery. Maybe another tackle out there like a Jason Peters or Taylor Lewan could be an emergency option.

I honestly think the inside will be fine when all is said and done. Think Andrews is still solid, Omenwu is a high end starter inside and I do think Strange will improve year two. Having McDermott as well as 2-3 mid round linemen for depth on the interior will make that area inside more flexible than it has been in the past. One of those guys developing into a solid starter could be huge if it allows Omenwu to kick outside and solidify the RT.

This line makes me uneasy, but if somehow Brown stays mostly available and plays solid this year, it can be a manageable solid line if things break right.

All is mum on Calvin Anderson. Man of mystery illness.

Rham, Montgomery and Douglas will be our savior. Quick passes, runs and screens keeping defense honest and not allowing any bull rush negating OLine weakness

I think that will be a big part of our offense.. But listening today to Ted Johnson he and zo were praising Mac for his arm strength and saying his deep ball looks really good. I believe BOB will have a spread offense, mixing in run/pass. I expect to see a more vertical passing offense this season.

I believe he's dealing with an illness of some sort.. at this point playing football is secondary.. hope he recovers. Never know what people are dealing with in thier lives.

The edges of the OL look questionable. Obviously, they are cutting Trent Brown a lot of slack. Probably too much.

Really unfortunate that Calvin Anderson all the sudden just before TC got an illness. In a press conference Belichick had a serious tone to his voice. We don’t know what it is.

Sidy Sow is being developed as an OT, but is facing a steep learning curve.

Reiff hasn’t set the world on fire, going neck and neck with McDermott.

It seems when he turns 35 this season much of the tackle play will be determined by this feisty veteran.

Thursday night here’s a projected starting line of Reiff-Mafi-D Andrews-Bill Murray-McDermott.

The tackle position looks to hold this team hostage until a move is made.

Time to bring back ole friend Justin Herron? He is unofficially the third string LT for the Raiders.
