Jayson Tatum is still overrated

Tatum is a stat collector...he is not a leader. It's just not his personality. i dont want to get rid of him but i am not going to expect him to take over a game when it matter the most. We had a chance to close out the series and he was poor. He plays lazy and he is just not my type of player. Im not going to argue with the folks who thinks he is the second coming but i just dont like his make up. I would take JB all day as i think he is a more explosive and athletic player.
I feel the same way about Tatum and I'd also take Brown over him. Unfortunately, I think Brown is G-O-N-E
Jaylen is an explosive scorer, like Tatum. Tatum is also a better defender, rebounder and playmaker. So you two would ship off the better player because ???.

I hate the debate between the two guys because they are both great players but people who watch the games with regularity know that Tatum is the central piece and hopefully he goes out tonight and has a strong performance and people can simmer down for a minute.

i specifically said i do not want to get rid of him and i also understand he is the central piece, I'm not an idiot (dont say it). All i am saying is he does not have that killer instinct to carry a team on his back.

If Tatum doesn’t have it, neither does Brown. So that would be unfortunate. Hopefully they prove otherwise.

Tatum did go into an elimination game on the road against Giannis in last years playoffs and carried the team on his back with near 50 points. So he does have it in him.

In my humble opinion, JT has two things stopping him from being a top 5 player in the league:

1. His outside shot is WAYYY too mechanical. When he lifts the ball up from below his waste, he looks like he's trying to lift a cinder block over his head. He needs to watch more Steph Curry.

2. He's not quite the isolation scorer he thinks he is. When he tries to put the team on his back is usually when the sloppy dribbling and turnovers in the paint occur. He has gotten much better finishing at the rim, but not when he's trying to slice through three defenders.

Boston clicks when all 5 players are involved. Isolation ball drives me nuts.

That being said, JT can be a top 5 player in this league. He's not there yet. I hope he stays a Celtic for a long time (JB too)!

Good post and fair points although at this stage I doubt Tatum is ever going to change up his shot mechanics.

C’s finally just finished them off with a great run at the very end. There was a number of disappointing things in this series but I’ll give the Hawks a lot credit. They played their asses off throughout the series and no game was easy.

I hope that this series and the Bucks falling to Miami serves as a wake up call to lock in on the present series, not think ahead to the conference finals or championship. I’m confident against Philly.

Great 4th quarter. They wanted it more and played some D. Rebounded. Hopefully a sign of things to come.

Been a C's fan since '67. Tatum isn't a leader (yet), and its an open question if he will ever have the ballast to be so.

If I had to pick either Brown or Tatum to stay, it would be Brown. Our Coach also needs a Bill Fitch transfusion. This team doesn't need an older brother/pal, it needs a guy who benches guys for sloppy, lazy, stupid play. This leaving in Smart at the end when he's doing too much when you have calm, cool, and collected Brogdon on the bench is just weak. At least he is now calling TO's to stem the other teams MO.

Hes fine.

Wrong move

Fitch would not last in today's NBA. Too abrasive.

They won 57 games and are favored to win the title. Not sure what more you want.

Agree 100% on every point.^^^^
Yes Tatum sucked in game 5. Yes Jaylen Brown is more fun to watch. I love both of em. But like the clown OP who created this extremely basketball- ignorant post, some of these posters have absolutely no clue what the hell they're talking about.
Tatum is absolutely a top 5 nbaer and the best player on the team. And it's not close. He probably deserves 1st team All Defense. He was easily the 2nd best defensive player on the C's in 2023 after the Time Lord. Better than Marcus Smart.
He has improved his game every year.
I love Jaylen Brown on and off the court. Probably the C I'd most like to hang out and have a beer with.Probably the best 2guard in the nba. But I'm under no illusions who the most valuable C is.
These clowns knocking Tatum sound like a bunch of Boston trash sports talk radio moron listeners. Same ones always whining about the Pats and Belichick.

Hes fine.
Not with his talent level and experience.
Wrong move
You'd get more in a trade for Tatum, OTOH Brown my not want to be here...

Thats why I said a transfusion, not the whole guy

They were much softer on D this year with more talent. They seem to have trouble closing games. Hawks pushed them hard for a meh team. They got a huge gift with the Bucks out. Did you see the Nuggets today? Or GS? Celts have the most talent, but is that enough?

Fitch sucked. 2nd worst Celtics coach after Pitino.
What you meant to say was maybe they need a little Udoka no- nonsense accountability. I'm not so sure. Mazzula has done a decent job especially considering he was thrust into it at the last minute.
Celtics would roll Denver. Warriors are and always have been the one opponent in the C's way. I hope both teams make it to the Finals. Would be a helluva series.
Different result this time but a tough series.

Your expectations are unreasonable. Every team would kill for him.

They were #2 in D this year. RW3 was missed.

Jimmy Rogers was horrible. At least Fitch won a title until he was tuned out.

Umm whatever. Tatum was junk last year vs GS in the Finals. Has he proven he's by that?

He's a stat guy, but this year, he's not top 5, 7 OK.

Advanced stats and my eyes don't agree. Although Brown really regressed on D this year however.
He has improved his game every year.
Regular season -yes. Playoffs?

But I'm under no illusions who the most valuable C is.

When the chips are down he's not as accomplished as when its a normal situation. He's not a Big Papi, Brady, Bird, Russell. Might he become one? We'll see.

Rogers was bad. Fitch did OK until Max and McHale decided they were done with him. Bird said he was the best Coach he ever played for. Tommy was kind of a blow hard, but he won 2.

Mazzula didn't start using time outs to stop mo of the other team until about 3 weeks ago. He's a buddy.

Larry was done with him as well.

I'm not sold on Mazz. He needs to continue to improve

Because Tatum isn't rising to the occasion, plus you can get a boatload. Fans would go crazy of course and he's embraced as the guy - easy to see that. Also easy to see Grant regressed and is immature, he won't be back. Pritchard will be gone unless they move Smart. They have no real way to replace Horford. Draft won't be a help, and if Brown gets named, not sure the C's will give him the max, if not, he's gone. Therefore, our very good GM has to figure it out. The two headed thing with Brown as the Jr partner doesn't seem like a long term stable situation. If Robbie is not healthy going forward thats another massive problem.

When Tatum in on, he is easily the most skilled Celt I've seen in the last 55 years. I would love to see him as the KG, Bird, Cowens, John, Russell. The most talented PG we ever had was Irving, but, he was worse for the C's than Rowe, Wicks, and Wiggle combined. Not saying Tatum is Irving for goodness sakes, but he's not those other guys, not yet. He's got 7-8 prime years left... time is ticking.

Thank you, very good post. I have a difficult time believing that a Celtics fan who watches every game and understands basketball would take anyone on the team ahead of Tatum. If he gets back to the finals and wins a championship he’ll be locked in as a top 5 player and top 3 in short order.

A championship run here completely flips the narrative of “Tatum is soft” to “Tatum is a HOF’er”. He has won a lot more than Doncic, Embiid, Jokic, Harding, Booker, Ja. You name it he has accomplished more than any of those guys.

I really hope he does it and shuts some people up.

I'm not betting against him or the team.
Long way to go won't be easy but never is
