Content Post Words on things I watched, read & heard II

This has an opening post with good commentary and information, which we definitely recommend reading.

this is interesting and I'm sure the anti-Mac squad will love it, BUT you can't take to seriously a stat that has Brady a 24 BEHIND guys like Nick Foles and Tyrod Taylor, and one has Peyton Manning somewhere BELOW 83rd and JaMarcus Russell.
It's the start of someone's career so it's going to be a little funky with some of the names.

Also some stats have outliers, it happens. I don't think it's damming but not what you want to see either.

I still believe Mac can hit peak if being a consistent fringe top 12-15 guy.

It is also a bit slanted because some guys don't play for a year or more after being drafted. So they are able to get in NFL shape, learn the offense, and hit the ground running in Y2 or Y3 versus QBs who start right out of college. Like with all stats, there are disclaimers.

Keep in mind that was measuring only the very start of a career. Foles is high because he had that ridiculous start throwing 27 TDs vs 2 INTs his second year. Peyton is low because his rookie year was awful.
Yeah, Ro, I know. I was just pointing out how some of these analytics can be misused in creating a narrative that doesn't exist. I mean based on this stat, Mack Jones has a FAR better first 2 years than Peyton Manning.

BTW- in the mock draft podcast, which was VERY informative, there was a story when Bill, at the E-W game told the kids his guys coached at, that based on what he's seen so far, NONE of those players would make his team. Both attention and intensity pick up after that.

I wonder if this kind of subtle "hard coaching" is behind the "clean slate" not mentioning who is the starting QB prior to camp. Don't forget that Mac had to WIN a QB competition, all the while Bill was insisting Cam was #1. So when Mac was CLEARLY the better QB, it was Cam that was let go.

What is shows is Bill doesn't give a **** about who is the PERCEIVED starting QB in April. The guy who is going to get the job is going to have to WIN it in camp. And the guy who DOES the best WILL get it. The BEST thing I liked about Mac coming in was that, like Brady, he is a psychotically keen competitor. I think Bill knows this and this whole preseason narrative that they are looking to get rid of him, is designed to light a HUGE fire under Mac.

Come August, we will get to see if it worked or not. Because history tells us that the best QB coming out of camp WILL be the starter, be it Mac, Zappe, or dare I say, Hendon Hooker in the 2nd round.

I think you hit the nail on the head. They should be tailoring the testing for the different positions.
Here are my thoughts:

Vertical / Broad - Everyone
Bench - OL/DL/LB

The area where I'm not sure how to replace is the 40. I mean, it's a good measure for OL and DL. Most people look at the 10yd split for them if they look at it at all. But the 40 is definitely helpful for WRs, DBs, RBs, and TEs.

Is there some way to combine the 40 with the 3-cone or Short Shuttle? Maybe do it on both sides of the field. Set it up where they run 15 yards, do an in-cut, then 10 yards, and a cut the opposite way up the field for 15 yards. This would test how they do going into and out of cuts, their acceleration, and overall stamina.. I'm open to other ideas..
Also how about doing the 3 cone and 40 in full uniform with shoulder pads and helmets

This thread is very long. I'd like to know if Daiyan Henley was ever mentioned. I know LBs are the defensive equivalent of RBs these days, but people should not be shocked if this Roman Phifer clone gets taken in the 2nd round. He'd be a long time starter at LB for us.

Bill got rid of Kobi - Mac's fav target and Harris - Mac's best friend on the team. It was the 4 amigos - Mac, Henry, Harris and Kobi but Henry still has $$ tied here. Not a coincidence. Now we upgraded on Smith and Kobi but a message was sent imo.

Yes.

Harris, Meyers, Hoyer ... gone.

That sends a message -- but not a good one. If you lose the locker room, then you need to get it back, not ship guys out for insubordination. They are the ones who play the game. Let's say you've canned those who spoke up. What sort of motivation does it give to those who are still there? Are they going to want to lay themselves on the line for the team? I don't think so.

But what about Smith? That was a huge financial hit. And do you remember that BB gave him a big compliment when an Atlanta reporter asked him about what they were getting? ("Jonnu is a great kid. I enjoyed working with him.") So I don't think that was sending a "don't speak up or you're out" message. Do you think it was BB giving up on him completely or did he maybe want a trade back to that part of the country?

I’ve been saying this.

I also like Henley, a lot, especially for what we still need here... But not at #46, unless Jack Campbell's still available...

I think Henley is going to be a star talent in this league and somebody is going to take him in the 2nd. He's going to be one of those captain do it all guys who never gets publicity but somehow always makes the All-Pro team, like Fred Warner. Or Mayo.

I talked about him somewhere. I'm done grading and posting them tonight after I get settled. Was planning on focusing on each group so we can talk about him later.

LB3 btw

All that really matters is that they all do it the same way.
Different player will respond differently to having to wear full uniform. But woukd have to standardize uniforms as some might try to cheat with lower weight equipment

I’ve been saying this.
Was it really a message though? Sometimes we have a habit of looking at things as fans that are so far off. Absolutely smoke was portrayed by the media and it might have been real.

If you look at it from a business standpoint, despite the market, was Jakobi worth that contract? He seemed to have maxed out his ability on the playing field which to me was above average. You already have Rhamondre and a couple of other young rb’s, are we sure availability wasn’t the issue with Harris?

You can definitely look at it as a message. But you can also see the business side as well. I don’t recall Jonu being outspoken but he was also dealt for I’m assuming poor performance.

I don't "rank" prospects like 1 - 15. Theres nothing wrong with that at all. Its much easier but this little system has helped me be inline with the NFL in terms of value for almost 15 years now. Ive done well with a good hit rate with very few bust or outliers. Its conservative but efficient. I've done pretty well overall since 2011. I'm probably stronger in some areas (positions) but think I've done really well everywhere over the years. You can see/jusge for yourself on the tabs below.

I watch as much film as I can (A22, broadcast) to identify specific traits, movements, skill sets etc to come up with a film grade before finalizing it with an athletic grade from testing (priorities *shuttles, 3C, jumps*) to average out their value. Although not the end all, production matters. That along with age, background is factored in. As I've said before traits that translate with plus testing and production usually = good players.

I try to get as specific as possible bc value is so important in the draft. That said I always allow myself some wiggle room as I would in a real life scenario. A 1st RD grade for me is 8.50. If I have a prospect at 8.30 and another person I trust has a 1st on him I'm not going to argue 95% of the time. So anyone with a grade/value of "8.30" or higher is fair game in RD1.

9 1st RD Grades (Robinson, Carter, Skoronski, Gonzo, DeeboSpoon, Porter, Wright, Wilson and Anderson) but I have 8.30 or higher on more than a few guys (11 I believe).

Updating PTP big time next two days. I have 15 or so names I'm adding and a few im taking off. Just been busy but by tomorrow night it'll be updated. Again any names you think I should add or take off lmk.

I'll go through each position group tomorrow. Any questions just ask. About Pats draft or grades or we.

This is gold, BGC. Thanks for your hard work.

One thing I noticed from last year is that it looks to have been a very good value year for quarterbacks. Pickett was the only one taken in the first two rounds -- and he's looked very good to me. There seem to have been some very good value pickups after that. Purdy, obviously, but Zappe too. Ridder is about to start for the Falcons and even Skylar Thompson didn't look too bad in a tough situation.

Of course, not many of these guys have had much time on the field yet, but it makes me think that perhaps the quality of quarterback out there each year may be less variable than the media buzz about it being a "good" or "bad" year for quarterbacks and that it's demand rather than supply that leads to a deluge of quarterbacks being taken early.

Some of it is it just falls in cycles. You'll have great classes and then have to wait for prospects to develop. One thing that will be a factore is NIL deals for older prospects. Not much incentive to come out as a late RD pick you know is limited. Vs being a big fish/small pond in college making 100 + grand through an NIL deal.

There's definitely stronger classes than others. They all come in waves except WR/RB. The surplus there is just much larger.

This is a decent class. I'd gamble on AR15 before anyone. You have some real decent potential at backup QB or "chance to start." Next year is a lot more top heavy. Teams are very aware of Williams, Maye etc. Teams always have their scouting dept look a year ahead as they do with the cap.
