Bears this offseason should:

  • Draft a QB 1st overall, package Fields for picks.

    Votes: 10 20.4%
  • Stick by Fields, trade down from number 1 for picks.

    Votes: 39 79.6%

  • Total voters

Trade 1 for Texans pick 2 and second rounder this year and second rounder next year . Then trade pick 2 to colts or somebody else for 2023 pick 1 , 2024 pick 1 and 2023 second rounder and 2023 3rd rounder .

Then draft impact picks this year , FA with 120 million in cap space and again 2 first rounders and second rounders next season . They would be the new eagles or 49ers . They should just beef offensive line , get saquon Barkley and with these weapons would instantly compete this year because of the dual threat of fields .

Now use those picks to draft 4 impact players in

Trade down

Bears need
OL
DL
LB
WR

Remember when the Bears did this? LMAO

Trading down is the right thIng to do, if they are sold on Fields...

But with the lack if a clear QB 1/2 thus year, is the overall number 1 that valuable that they would get a treasure trove of picks in return?

They should just trade us the 1 straight up for Marcus Jones...hes on a rookie deal, can fill multiple roles, is the versatile weapon they need... Win win imo...

And yes that last bit is ... Do I really have to say it?

They should trade down with some other desperate team after Bryce Young (who the Texans won their way out of) and accumulate picks. Even if Fields isn’t the guy, they could accumulate a wealth of picks that could put them in a position for the guy they like in the future.

Chicago should give us the 1st overall pick for Zappe.

Chicago should give us the 1st overall pick for Zappe.
you might be onto something here... the 9ers just demonstrated how important it is to have a back up qb for your back up qb for your back up qb...

You sit there and let the offers pour in. By my count about 13 teams are in definite need at QB.

Houston-obvious

Indy-Obvious

L.A. Rams Stanford is either done or almost done.

Las Vegas-Carr is clearly on the outs there.

Atlanta-Obvious

New Orleans-Obvious

Washington -Obvious

Tampa Bay -Obvious

Seattle-Obvious

You could throw in Green Bay, Tennessee, and the Jets, but I think all 3 will take a year or two to sort it out. Brady and Carr could be temporary solutions for a couple of those teams, but it’s still a large field of teams that are in serious need at QB it could end up a bidding war. And if they wanted to they could probably trade # 1 to Houston, then trade #2 to Indy for #4, then #4 to the Rams for #6, at which point they would have a massive haul to complete their rebuild with.

I’ve been thinking about this situation for them this offseason because it’s pretty interesting.

They have a QB in Fields that did make big strides this year. He’s now up with Lamar in regards to being the most dynamic QB running the football in the league. But while his passing ability did improve, it still leaves plenty to be desired. Maybe some of that can be blamed on the lack of talent surrounding him as well? But regardless..

Now the Bears find themselves with the top pick in the draft. They will evaluate 3-4 QB’s who will have the potential of being a high 1st round pick. If your ultimate goal as a franchise is to have the best QB running the ship possible, it feels like it would be smart to pull the trigger here.

Reasons why:

-You could say QB’s in the draft are no sure thing, and that’s accurate. But while Fields has shown promise, is he a sure thing?

-Money is a factor. Fields is already two years into his deal and will be due a much larger sum of money in a couple years, whereas if you start over, you have another four years of a rookie QB on a cheap contract to build this team up.

-Fields also has done enough to warrant some strong compensation. And he is early enough in his deal for a team to get him for cheap for a couple years. You think a team like Washington wouldn’t give up at least a 1? I would have to imagine they would. So while the draft compensation may not be as strong for Fields as it would for trading down from number 1, it may be pretty damn comparable.

Maybe the Bears evaluate these QB’s and decide that none of them are as good as what they have in Fields right now, which is fine. But if they evaluate any of these guys and see a potential of a higher ceiling, I think there’s no doubt they should pull the trigger.

I’m so interested in their offseason situation in particular, because it’s the kind of situation I used to love being in on Madden Franchise mode: a team with endless cap space, top pick in the draft, and the option of any QB they want. Basically an opportunity to build the team from the ground up.

Thoughts?

I'd talk to teams around the league who might have interest in a franchise quarterback. See if they'd pay more for the #1 pick (which MIGHT end up being better than Fields, but which might NOT) or for Fields. Then I'd make the best deal I could given that feedback, because I think it's 50/50 whether the top QB in this draft would be better than Fields, and I could live with either option if I'm Chicago.

Truly elite qb will get the big contract. Rest of them could be on franchise tag for a year or become backups for 8-10 million after 4-5 years .

Only 6 franchise QBs for now - mahomes, Allen,Herbert, burrow,Watson and Trevor lawrence.

All others are in evaluation or last 2-3 years as starter ( Rodgers, Stafford, cousins, garopollo )

Assuming they're sold on Fields, and at this stage it would be silly to move on from him unless they think Young or Stroud is Brady / Montana / Manning / Elway redux, then assuming someone wants to trade up, then yeah, gather picks.

If not, take the best non QB. Carter or Anderson (the latter, for me).

Brett Kollmann's answer to this is well worth a watch:

It my have hurt him at the time.

But I do not believe he would have been as successful in Chicago. They were/are a mess.

As for the topic at hand, definitely trade down. Get picks. And parlee those picks into something even bigger.

Not sold on Fields being a top tier QB. But Young is no guarantee either.

I agree with Ken's post for the most part with the added caveat that they have to hope a clear front runner emerges. If everyone sees Young, Stroud, Levis, etc. as all good but more or less equal talents why does Indy or whoever else hop up?

Most of these teams near the top are a long way away. There's a few exceptions like Vegas, Tenn, etc. I think I'd take the best player available and not trade up. Then in the second round take Hooker who if not for the injury would be in the discussion for going at the top.

I wonder what it'd cost for the Pats to trade up to #1. It cost SF their own #12 plus two future firsts a couple years ago to get to #3. Obviously not going to happen but just thinking through it. Imagine if they traded up for Bryce Young after signing Bill O'Brien, his 'Bama OC.
