Here's Mel's picks for us as of 4/12/06.

#21 Santonio Holmes WR OSU

#52 Brian Calhoun RB Wisc

#75 Chris Gocong De/ Lb Cal Poly

#86 Montavious Stanley DT , Lou

#106 Guy Whgimper OT E. Car

#118 Derek Hagen Wr ASU

Hagan at 118?! Is he out of his mind?!

I like Gocong, the rest he can keep.

I can see him being a MLB for the Pats, a former QB (high School), then a Nose Tackle, DE and now move him to MLB.

If you were going to make a MLB, you want someone who is half QB and half Nose Tackle.

Like if you put Brady and Wilfork and the giant superconductor and shamshed them togethter at an incredible speed and you would come out with Gocong!

You mean supercollider, not superconductor. :) Nice image though anyway.... I bet the noise they'd make when smashing together would sound just like that too.... "Go-CONG!"

agreed

I agree with you on Gocong, but I want some of whatever mel was smoking when he chose the rest of his picks.

Typical Mel Diaper Jr. He is totally inept when it comes to projecting talent into the fit of an organization. No wonder the Dolts fired him from their scouting staff.
Much like the neutered dog, Diaper don't get it.
I like Gocong and Stanley, although both seem to be going a little too high.
Hagan's is fairly well polished, but he leaves a lot of balls on the turf.
Calhoun???? What is it BB always says, if you can't pick up the blitz, I can't put you on the football field.
Holmes, well I will say this, he caught a lot of ball over the middle. He's got to have some toughness.

There ya go again, mike, tryin to violate the laws of physics.

The noise they'd make when smashing together ... would be faster than the speed of light!

This would croak our timeline of the multiverse
and throw us back to the age of
Sam Huff.

Well next time I talk to Mel , I'll let him know what you guys think of his picks. He's going to be pissed.

Who cares if he's pissed. He's a buffoon with little solid insight. He cares more about his hair than his football knowledge.

The only consistent thing he's done in his career is make bad picks for NE. Good thing we don't follow his philosophy.

Doesn't it make you wonder how smart he really is? With all the GM's, Coaches, A. Coaches and scouts getting paid to do what he does why doesn't he have a job in the NFL?

This guy is terrible. We would be better served by ignoring his "insight".

Mel Kipers hair could stop a bowling-ball..... Maybe 2 many times judging by those picks....:rocker:

No, you don't. That stuff must be so bad that you'd probably wake up in a hotel room with a hangover and wearing a Colts jersey. :scared:

No DB's?

It looked like he took each team's needs, then his rating by position.

Based on his first round projection, Santonio Holmes makes sense.

However, he'll change his outlook three or four times over the next two weeks.

I'm with you on Calhoun. He's a wasted pick waiting to happen. I think he projects to "bust" more than any other first day RB...even LenDale.

<I wonder if someone with a little time and energy could detail his Pats projected picks over the last few years..........

He may not have the right personnel here in every slot, but I think the positions sound very realistic. Especially if you flop the DE/LB up to the 1st round! Then throw in a 6th round TE.

Re: Kipers Patriots Picks, first 4 rounds

While watching the game Sunday night, I was remembering our draft talk prior to the 2006 draft, it looks like all of us that liked Gocong for a LB were right.

Philly is one of those teams , like Dallas, who seem to like the same kind of players as the Pats do. Philly ended up taking him with the 7th pick of the third round (#71) overall, the Pats traded the 75th pick to move up and take Chad Jackson.

It is funny to look through the old threads to see who was right, and who was wrong.

Re: Kipers Patriots Picks, first 4 rounds

Here's Mel's picks for us as of 4/12/06.

#21 Santonio Holmes WR OSU - Steelers - good player
#52 Brian Calhoun RB Wisc - injured knee, no impact
#75 Chris Gocong De/ Lb Cal Poly - Eagles - missed year 1 with a knee injury, appears to be making some progress
#86 Montavious Stanley DT , Lou - cut and then signed with Atlanta
#106 Guy Whimper OT E. Car - Giants - on squad, appears to be an ok pick
#118 Derek Hagen Wr ASU - Dolphins - inconsistent but on team, ok pick

Actual Draft 2006 - New England Patriots
Rd Sel # Player Position School
1 21 Laurence Maroney RB Minnesota - inconsistent, injuries hamper progress
2 36 Chad Jackson WR Florida - jury still out
3 86 David Thomas TE Texas - injuries hamper progress
4 106 Garrett Mills RB Tulsa 0- cut from team
4 118 Stephen Gostkowski K Memphis - good pick

It goes to show that even Day 1 picks are 50/50 at best

As a side note I read an old high school scouting report, it has Matt Cassell at 59 and Vince Wilfork at 60 as the best players in the country

Especially when you're right - I shall never doubt you. ;)
