3 and out easy peasy UnDefeated!

They just don't have the speed and talent to eliminate this. Bentley, Tavai, Jennings and Judon are terrible in space. I can forgive Judon as he's brings something else very well to the table - pass rush. The others have no excuse.

It was just bad run fits last night.

I wonder if it was Barmore's absence as well as Dugger getting dinged.....

We are gonna have play A LOT better this week.

Did Bill feel that using a spy would weaken another unit too much? I wasn't able to watch much but I do remember a 3rd and 10 going unconverted because we used a spy. But I keep hearing we didn't use them much.

What mainly worries me is how drastically different the defense looks from edge to edge with what I can only assume, and others have as well, as the absence of Barmore and Duggar.

I remember running QB's not being Bill's strong suit, but he has clamped down on them before. What was exceptional about it this time? The lack of personnel after injuries?

Slow linebackers...

It's way more than speed and talent, IMO, guys. Bill accounts for everyone on defense, save for a running QB. Running QBs have been an issue as long as Bill has been here. Every defense has a built in weakness that is there based on design, and has very little to do with personnel. I don't know the in's and out's of the Patriots defensive scheme, but that's how it looks to me.

Cam Newton in 2013 and 2017... 2-0 with 525 yards passing and 106 yards rushing. an inferior 2008 Dolphin team and the wildcat, Tyrod Taylor rushed for 159 on 22 carries in 5 games. Tyrod eff'n Taylor. Lamar Jackson got them for 107 this year, 55 yards in 2020, and 61 in 2019. Deshaun Watson got them for 41 in '17, 40 in 18, but only -1 on 4 carries in '19. I don't know the x's and o's theory of why, but this is as clear to me as you can beat cover 3 with 4 verts. This is the hole in the Pats D. It's not the same as a scrambler, who they traditionally keep in the pocket but don't sack often. Keep him home and don't let him in the open. Designed run plays for the Q have been an issue here since forever.

Slow linebackers...
Wow, you came around. I remember you and others giving me so much resistance in the offseason regarding the LB's.

I don't think I ever said our LBs were fast...

Sure you did. You and others thought the speed and their other problems was taken care of with McMillan, Mack Wilson and McGrone.

Patriot’s dump truck LB can only move in 1 direction. If they are placed in position for ahead-on collision then they are likely to win, but smart people get out of their way and let their momentum go past them.

I don’t recall…but go ahead and quote me if you can find it. I thought our run D would but improved but I didn’t think our speed would be a lot better

Honestly, I'm not that bitter and won't go out of my way to try to show up someone on a message board.

Don't worry about it.

I’m not upset at you and you quoting me about the team speed would not be “showing me up.” If I said it, obviously I was wrong. I just don’t remember - in fact I thought I said just the opposite

The Bears offense is garbage and routinely struggles to score. We need outside coaching help because it is clear BB, Steve, Mayo, and anyone else that is part of this coaching tree is at a loss on how to stop mobile qbs.

Taylor Kyles has posted some of the film for these runs. I’ll link the tweets instead of embedding so they don’t take up a bunch of space.

Scramble 1
Man coverage with Phillips in zone underneath. He cuts off the crosser, as expected. Often, they’ll switch responsibilities after the crosser to keep the original man defender back in the underneath zone. Here, that would mean Phillips cuts off the crosser and then sticks with the TE after that, while Dugger drops off to replace Phillips in the middle of the field. That didn’t happen here (I’m not sure if it was supposed to or not), and instead both defenders ended up on the other side of the field with nobody in the middle watching the QB. Bentley could have made a play, but he also was facing the other direction to cover a potential receiver.

Scramble 2
Man with a spy, just like we all wanted. Fields drops the snap, and Wilson abandons spying to go blitz instead. I don’t know what to do here, because I don’t think I’d be coaching the spy to just sit back and watch the QB pick the ball up. Not really something teams can replicate anyway.

Three designed runs
The first two are against a Wise-Ekuale-Guy DL, and frankly I’m not sure what else you’d expect to happen there. I don’t know if Godchaux and Davis were kept off the field with a hurry up or if this was just how the rotation went, but at the very least it’s an example of where they miss Barmore. With a deep safety (who eventually makes Fields go out of bounds) and 3 Patriots vs 2 Bears receivers on the far side away from the run, the Bears had 8 blockers against 7 Patriots at the line of scrimmage on the third play. CBs had a chance to make plays on these, and while the general lack of size hasn’t been a huge deal in coverage, it has showed up on outside runs. Jack Jones did have a good run stuff against the RB last night, at least.

Three more designed runs
Feels like Judon needs to take the TE on the first one to let the CB have a chance on Fields. Instead they get two blockers on two DBs. Last two were better, with Bryant defeating a block and Jennings making a tackle in space.

I sure hope, when Belichick does retire, he does not convince Kraft to keep his kids around on the next coaches staff.

That won’t happen with an outside candidate, but I could see the Belichick boys getting a gift job from a staff of one Of Belichick’s assistants
