Thanks for posting this. I don't watch as much non Patriots football as I used to, and my limited impressions of him were not very good, so when they signed him I checked his pff grade to see if it matched my perception and unfortunately it did.

This gives me a better idea on what Bill saw in him and how he could be utilized. I still hope that one of the more athletic guys beet him out, but won't be as panicked if it doesn't happen.

30 is OK, maybe 31. After that it goes downhill fast - see Darrelle Revis. Butler is too old to me, but maybe he has a year left in him. I think the Pats are pushing Jack Jones for a reason - our outside CBs are not strong.

With the standard 2 starters outside & 1 inside, Mitchell would be a #5, tops, on a legit contender... Yet here he is competing with the likes of Mills, Butler & Jackie Jones for one of the two outside openings...Jon Jones, Marcus Jones & Bryant are the inside guys while Wade & SloJoe are maybe vying more to become DMac's backup at this point in their careers... I'm not even thinking of them as CBs now... Bethel of course makes the 53 as
STer & Emergency CB...

He has 4.5 speed, so average CB speed but he does possess elite agility and is decent everywhere else assuming he got stronger since his rookie year. Malcolm Butler was a tenth of a second slower than Mitchell at his pro day and that guy made the Pro Bowl once. Forty times are overrated by many fans.

Mitchell's 40 time was 4.63 and he's been in the league for 7 seasons, so not sure why you bring up his rookie year. He's played for 5 different teams in those 7 seasons. The last 2 seasons he's allowed a 102 passer rating, 11 TDs, and 13.3 yds per completion. He's not good.

His combine 40 was 4.63s but he claimed he ran a 4.43s at a private workout (lol):

Meanwhile, from 2019 - 2021 NE has enjoyed a brick wall at pass defense. We had a great run with Gilmore and Jackson.

The 2021 Houston and 2020 Cleveland pass defense was swiss cheese. Mitchell played + 85% of the snaps both seasons.

Slow CBs tend to allow big cushions because they are afraid to get burnt. Defenses cant get off the field because they give up too many 3rd down conversions. We saw this when Wheatley and Darius Butler were the CBs.

Sadly, to me, this is a reset year for the defense. Not a retooling or reload, but a full reset. I expect some really frustrating stretches. Still trust they'll be in the upper half at the end of the year, with a ranking of 13th or so, helped largely by smoke and mirror gameplans that can confuse bad teams and sometimes slow down better ones.

Mitchell improved his forty time at his pro day from 4.63 to 4.52. I said I assumed he got stronger from his rookie year because he was weak, only benching it 8 times.

He played for the Texans, they ranked 27th worst ranked in sacks. They were one of the worst teams in the NFL at creating pressures. It’s impossible to cover with no pressure.

No CB looks good on a bad defense, but especially a CB who is merely "good" and not great. I remember posters telling us Stephon Gilmore, who was coming from a bad Buffalo defense, was overpaid and overrated by the Patriots... that turned out to be poor analysis. We don't need him to become Gilmore, he won't... but a solid #2 or #3 is a reasonable expectation.

I'm not sure what this means, IMO this year is a total unknown for the defense... I guess the same thing you're saying.

A year to determine if these young LB'ers have what it takes or not. If not, the D has the potential to be pretty average. I say average rather than bad because I think BB can coax a decent result defensively out of a pretty bad lot.

They also have the potential to be better than most think, if Uche, McGrone, Jennings and all the rookies turn out to be good players. This seems like a long shot, but it has happened before so it could happen again.
