Collins + Brown would be frickin’ nasty. Move Wynn and Onwenu to guard?

This has to be the move, he can't hate Mac enough to not give him protection right?

I heard Mac got a new haircut and Bill wasn’t pleased.
When asked for comment says look I can’t talk about every set of hair on the team.
They know what’s expected of them. It starts in the off-season with shampoos and gels and conditioners. Then we have a team of hair specialists we trust.
We prefer the players to use our network of Beauticians.
When they don’t there’s a guy behind them who’s been taking all the vitamins and minerals for the best development they can ask for.
We want guys who choose not to wear hats and their hair is important to them.
We are building a culture.

Might as well close down the forum until Week 1 then, right?
No.

What folks here wish to do is to restructure all our players, pushing $25M of cap money into the future, cut players they don't like, and trade others.
With the new total of $40M-$50M, folks want to fill all the roster spots with their favorite stud players at high market prices, before they are all signed. The contract would have a maximum of money moved into the future when the caps will be higher.

Then they would have added enough players to the roster to hopefully meet our needs at the highest prices and will have found a way to negate much of the advantages of the future cap increases, having already spent the cap money.

Go for it! Have your wet dreams! Just understand that this approach has exactly ZERO to with how the patriots have been run since Kraft arrived in the 90's. I understand that there are those who would have managed the team much, much better than the Krafts and Belichick.

Sheesh

The patriots will NOT restructure every contract. They never do. The patriot strategy is a conservative one, one that has produced competitive teams every year. We have always been in the playoff or a game away. We have a better record that any other team. I realize that this isn't nearly enough for some.

You laugh but as soon as Wino cut his hair Bill shipped him out.

Bringing in Collins at LT would be a big move - both in FA money and the OL. Assuming Wynn can suddenly move in to LG is still a gamble, not only for the position change but relying on his consistency regarding injuries. But, it'd be a big step up too.
I think 1 more top-level OL talent will suffice. whether Collins or Brown - we could probably make Onwenu and one of the newer guys like Sherman, Desjarlias work at the other G spot. So either:
Collins - Wynn - Andrews - Onwenu/Sherman - Herron/Onwenu OR
Wynn/Herron - Sherman/Wynn - Andrews - Onwenu - Brown

And this is before any potential draftee.

Lol, it's a fan forum. What else are we supposed to do? There's plenty of IBWT posters here. Variety is the spice of life.

We might, just might try to consider free agency, the cap, and filling needs as the team does.

By doing that we wouldn't be shocked when the team doesn't restructure every contract and use the additional cap money to sign the very top free agents in the first week of free agency to heavily back loaded contracts. They would understand that restructures will happen when they absolutely need to happen. Of course, if the restructures are done as folks want, then these same posters complain about these contracts in Year 2 or Year 3, when the cap hits are much higher than the first year.

The patriots will push some money into the future, as we always have. We might even do a bit more than usual because of the increasing 2023 and 2024 cap levels. However, it more like the patriots to wait (last year was a carefully planned exception). We usually wait until the first level of contracts are gone at the highest prices. After all, these are the players who couldn't get enough from their former teams and have come to free agency to get paid. The patriots may sign a couple of players in the first week (other than our own re-signs). It is when the first is over that the patriots start really looking to sign players from other teams. We will likely sign more players, but rarely the very top free agents. Many posters really dislike this approach. They prefer that we spend everything we have on the most shiny expensive free agents, and then do little for the next 4 and 1/2 months of free agency.

I’d like us to bring Collins in as the new RT, his contract is reasonable, but would depend on what we’d have to give up to acquire him.

Move Big Mike into RG. Now this is where things could become interesting, you could move Wynn into LG as many have said they should of done when we drafted him, and then draft a new LT, plenty of options for this to be done this year. Two mid round guys I’d like if we moved Wynn to LG are; Rasheed Walker (PSU) and Nicholas Petit-Frere (OSU).

If we plan to keep Wynn at LT then these are Three guys I’d like us to look at - Tyler Smith(Tulsa) he could also play LT potentially as well.

Darian Kinnard (Kentucky) mauler type guy. Is a mammoth.

Lastly Dylan Parham (Memphis) guy has comps to Shaq Mason.

All the draft guys I’ve said all have around 2-4 round grades on them.

I posted earlier today how the Pats could clear $25 million of cap space. I never said that they should or would clear all that space.

In doing so, I did point out the Patriots, at that point, were $108 million under the 2023 cap and $184 under the projected 2024. Pushing $25 million into those years with rapidly escalating caps and with a QB still in his rookie contract would not handcuff the Pats in those years from doing business as usual.

You are wrong in your statement that this how the Pats have done things since the Krafts assumed ownership. In the 90s, the Krafts spent at a higher level to the cap than since Belichick took over lavishing top of the market contracts on Ty Law and Drew Bledsoe. You’re just factually wrong there.

I’m not a spend every last penny until eternity fan. I’m a draft and develop fan and loath that the Patriots got away from that model. The Patriots need to get better, but they also need to get younger. Because of Covid, this is one of the better draft classes I’ve seen in my 40 years of following the draft imho. Last year in a lesser draft, they got what looks like a franchise QB, a stud DLman, and the best young RB they’ve had since Robert Edwards. I think Perkins can play as well. That’s how you fill the holes on the 2022 roster not with older big names who come and go and cost so much you then can’t afford to keep all your good players.

If I remember right, Onwenu’s difficulties (though he was still mostly fine) at LG seemed to have a lot to do with being on the left of the line versus being used to being on the right when he was the RT. Possibly going to RG would be simpler for him since it’s still on the right?

IMO - they should pay Brown. Yes he’s had injury issues but so has Wynn and Wynn’s contract is due next year, and Wynn does not measure up to Brown. Pay Brown and make him your LT for the next couple years at least, trade for Collins to be your RT, make Onwenu your Mason replacement and figure out LG, maybe give Wynn a try and if he doesn’t work out then you trade him at the deadline or you just keep him as a reserve LT for the year (though an expensive one). Then you can focus on WRs, DBs and defensive line in the draft.

I was discussing the same thing about RG for Onwenwu with my brother earlier.

Yeah his issues were at LG. Think it may of been his first time he’s lined up there in years. Played RG in college.

My only issue with Brown is the injury history, same with Wynn if we’re talking extensions with Wynn as well then.

I think a lot of the draft prospects will be determined by what we’re going to do in free agency, my draft guys were if we didn’t really address them in the free agency period, but still think we will come away with one guy in the draft for the line.

The more I look into Collins the more I’d like him to be our RT for the next 3-5 years, would give us the security we need at a tackle spot that we haven’t had since Solder and Cannon/Vollmer. Which has been a long time.

Feel a bit bad for him but the reality is that he has sucked. Last year he was hurt pretty bad but there aren't many excuses in the NFL. He's supposed to be an accurate QB and he's missed many many throws. I don't know why Watson would stay in the AFC but lets hope he doesn't stay because that would bump another team to WC status.

I could be hopeful, but I think we might actually be inn on him. It makes a whole lot of sense. If my memory recalls correctly, bill was really high on collins when he came out, but we couldn’t take him
After the whole AH thing, and the potential criminal/murder situation he went through the daybefore the draft. He was wildly considered a top 10 talent before that. He’s only gotten better every year. He’d be a great prize if we somehow landed him. Hopefully for the 5th we got for mason, but it might take a little more after reading around.

He also spent the first two years at guard and did fairy well there. So if Wynn doesn’t work out at G, he offers some flexibility to move him inside. I agree trade for him, and resign brown and keep Wynn as well. It’s not perfect in terms of cap space, but it gives us a season to see who we really want to keep long term.

Interesting. I bet Bill would have been interested in Baker last year. IIRC they were rumored to be looking to draft him before he suddenly shot all the way up to #1 overall in the lead-up to the draft.

    Thank God that didn’t happen
  2. Baker to the Colts or Seahawks?
