Patriots Player Departure Shaq Mason traded to the Bucs

I guess Onwenu is the right guard. Makes sense as he was less successful on the left side, and they clearly don’t see him as a tackle (since they brought back Brown last year).

The question is who is the new left guard? Who is the right tackle?
Not sure about right tackle, but for left guard I wonder if they have a lot of confidence in what they saw from Drew Desjarlais? CFL all star signed back in January.

Those O lineman at the combine were a pretty fast and deep group so it seemed - so there's that..

rumours during the combine were that the O-Line Free Agent class will may have a hard time due to a good looking draft class

Like the rest of you, I don't like this. It seems we've given away our best OL, who was on a reasonable contract and in a positional group that already lacked stability, for barely anything in draft capital to save cap space we could have saved another way.

That being said, I did see him on some lists of potential cap cuts/trades before free agency started, so this isn't a complete surprise.

Remember everyone, its those stoooopid Bucs who are supposed to be in "cap hell" because of Brady while we are supposed to be stocking talent with our rookie contract QB

Meanwhile, in reality...

gonna miss the big guy... c'est la vie...

in tribute ...

in the RG position to boot

The Bucs are $21 million over the cap now, while NE is about $15 million under

Well, here I sat trying to make some kind of point about strengthening the OL leading to a better offense in 2022 through stability and continuity and adding pieces there versus a #1 WR and this happens.

We zig...Patriots zag. No surprises there I guess.

stop it... dont let a perfectly good anti Belichck screed get derailed by something like an easily looked up fact

And? My point stands

The Bucs are not in "cap hell" and in year 3 of the Brady experience are still adding talent.

Meanwhile, we just gave up one of the best guards in the league for cap relief.

Yes, something so inconvenient as cap relief...Bucs are going to have to make some choices and/or extend players to get under the cap. I'd be shocked if they added more pieces in FA without releasing and/or trading any players.

Almost 7 years ago y'all were kind enough to let me introduce to Shaq Mason, one of my all time favorite Jackets (I still have a #70 GT jersey).

All he's done is be the perfect Patriot. He's played at an all-pro level once they moved him to right guard during his rookie season. He's extremely durable and has never been anything other than a consummate professional. He did everything asked of him and never caused a lick of trouble. He was the best player on the team this past year - not the most valuable because he's a guard - and I'll fight anyone who disagrees with me (other than Ashley, of course.)

And you know what the worst part of this is? They let him go so they could keep that often injured, can't play, gutless leg humper Isaiah Wynn. It makes a a GT fan want to vomit

They just added Russell Gage today, who would be a #1 reciever on the Pats.

LOL, no he wouldn't. And i"ve already factored Gage into my thinking. Like I said, you guys are $20 million over the cap. Some tough choices are going to have to be made or some manipulating existing contracts

Neither do I but I'm sure the kool aid drinkers get it. For a 5th Rounder really not even a 4th??

I don't get it either. But Bill Belichick isn't stupid. Except for 1999 (when he took over a lousy team) and 2020 (with Cam at QB during a year when a dozen guys missed the year from Covid), he's fielded nothing less than a good team *at worst*. Every. Single. Year. Even the two seasons without Brady (11-5 with Cassell, and 10-7 with Mac). The guy knows what he's doing. He doesn't get every move right, but anyone who thinks Bill is dumb is even dumber.

How many are as good as Shaq Mason tho?

They're counting on 7M in cap space and a 5th rounder to improve the team more than Shaq Mason could, with a 2nd year QB... It's certainly a curious move, if nothing else
I don’t know if he’s as good as Mason, but Owenu is that guy now. We will have to see how he does.

They’ve been resigning players they wanted back and letting some go. They are likely pushing money into 2023 and beyond like a lot of teams because the cap is supposed to explode then. The Pats should do the same. I’m hoping the Pats do the same.
