J.C. Jackson - "It's time to get Mr. INT paid."

Let the free market determine his worth, decide whether to match or not. It’s smart. He’s going to get wildly overpaid.
Jackson is a free agent. He finds a team that will meet his contract terms. it is only local hubris to think that he would offer the patriots a chance to match.

Giants interested in trading James Bradberry, who's a very good corner...but he also comes with a big cap hit

Would love Bradberry if JC walks , but that cap hit would be an issue

It’s kind of a risky move because you’re telling teams you have no intention of signing him long term. I’d tell Bill I wasn’t interested and wait for him to be a UFA without being tagged.

It wouldn't be the first time it happened. The Pats tagged Cassel and everyone knew they had no intention to sign him long term. Most player who have been tagged and traded, everyone knew that the team tagging them had no intention of signing them to a long term deal for whatever reason (they are a valuable player they don't need, the two sides are worlds apart on a deal, etc.). That is why most tag and trade deals happen immediately after the start of the new contract year.

Now the Pats are up against the cap and would have do several moves just to franchise Jackson. And then, they would have no money to make free agent moves without freeing up a lot more money. Other teams could use that against the Pats in any negotiations. The longer Jackson would be on the cap during free agency, the more hamstrung the Pats would be.

I am guessing if they had the cap space they had last year, they would have made the risk of tagging Jackson. But with them only having about $7 million of free cap space and needing over $17 million of cap space just to tag Jackson, that played a big role in their decision. If they couldn't trade Jackson in the first few weeks of free agency, it would stop them from making any moves.

The cap space issue is one thing I didn't factor into the situation. Teams know the Pats couldn't afford to keep Jackson on the roster for the first weeks or month or so of free agency.

His agent will offer the Pats a chance to match it if he wants to stay in New England or beat it if he's indifferent. A bidding war is the best case scenario for agent and player.

Chances are some team will offer too much and he'll be gone.

Yeah I’m good with the team not paying elite corner $ for this

No he isnt.

The 2022 league year does not officially start until 4:00 pm ET on March 16. 2022. The Pats control Jackson rights for approximately 10 more full days.

Not risky at all.

Pats are testing the waters if they plan on tagging Jackson as their next option. Some team may bite and give the Pats what they want or something better than a 3rd compensatory pick if the math works out right. For all we know, a deal might still happen. For the new team the beauty of dealing with the Pats before FA is that they beat all other Jackson suitors to the pass. Yes, you give up nothing waiting for Jackson to hit the market and you also risk no Jackson at all.

Its a mistake to let Jackson leave, but we fans never know what should be done.

Yup. Can we tag Jackson and eat 2 -3 million as signing bonus so that cap hit on other team is around 14 and they work out a longer term deal while reducing the cap space for this year. That way some very needy team can give us a high 2nd rounder . We very badly need that pick this year.

Id rather keep Jackson and not get into another Cam Newton debacle where the Pats have to sign a FA CB. One that doesn't cost a lot and doesn't do a lot either.

Drafting a CB is playing with fire. We know that Jackson can play man and zone seamlessly. No CB is Deon Sanders in this passing driven NFL.

Pats only take on his base salary and workout bonus, which “only” totals $13.5m. Deal voids after this year. Likely would want to restructure/extend him as part of a deal though.

Wow...that is bad.

@captain stone Is letting JC walk like this horrible management of an asset or what? When he signs a big contract early in FA, I will be the first to add this to Bill's list of blunders.

I just don't understand why Bill won't franchise Mr INT in order to give himself another year to re-assemble the position group... Makes no sense to me, especially when the Fact that we have NO-FUC-KING-BODY behind him or even Across from him is taken under consideration.

4 year, $80M contract, $25M signing bonus, $48M guaranteed:
(S)alary, (B)onus, (C)ap.

2022: $2M S + $5M B = $7M C
2023: $16M S + $5M B = $21M C
2024: $17M S + $5M B = $22M C
2025: $20M S + $5M B = $25M C
2026 (void): $5M B

He can be cut post-June 2024 w/ dead money (DM):

2024: $12.5M DM, $9.5M savings
2025: $7.5M DM, $17.5M savings

This is doable w/ only $7M cap hit in '22 or an avg of $14M for next two seasons. This tells me Bill doesn't think JC is the guy.

Interesting so JC Jackson would be the First CB Hmmmm. I would love to keep him but we have too many needs at the moment.
If they let JCJ go then CB could be one of those needs.

I’m glad they’re not using the franchise tag on Jackson. Either negotiate with him in good faith as a free agent or move on.

To me, Jackson has elite ball skills but is not an elite cover guy because he lacks top end speed. He’s replaceable, but they had a need at CB even with Jackson.

The Pats played far more zone last season, especially on early downs than they have in a long time. I wonder if this a sign that might continue next season as well. It was actually quite successful for a while during the winning streak.
Yeah against Teams who come in totally banged up. We won't be able to play consistent zone against the Iron in the AFC. The AFC sports some very good young QB's who are currently better than Mac at this point. Remember Buffalo didn't punt once and JC Jackson was on the field.

It's not how much is spent but on whom. JCJ is worth a better contract but he won't get that here.

Because they kept Malcolm Butler and Jamie Collins despite their protests to get paid and both moves came back to bite them in a rear.

Collins started freelancing and making a stink in the media. Malcolm Butler refused to communicate with Gilmore, played like garbage, blamed coaches for his poor play before screwing over his teammates the week leading up the Super Bowl.

If Jackson is going to get a stupid rich contract then let some other team set the terms. If the Pats think it’s reasonable or close to their offer then they match it. If it’s out of the world, let him go and take the compensatory pick.

I think some team will give him a deal he isn’t worth because nobody is worth it. At some point an unwieldy percentage of your cap to one player becomes a mistake regardless of position or player... and especially regardless of what BB hating fans says.

JC Jackson is a good player, but part of his greatness is due to playing on very good defenses every season except 2020. He was an UDFA, not some superstar exiting college.

In a CB heavy draft (I’ve heard?) you can find the position available deep in rounds and even afterwards. Pay, but don’t overpay.

I hope JC doesn’t fall into the trap in only considering the money and ignoring the organization, Coaches and what scheme they play. Revis talked about this in a video that he knew he was going to a bad situation for his playing style in TB, but he wanted to get paid. He admitted he had wasted years there.

With JC, if he goes to a bad team, he will expected to make an enormous impact and will get heavily criticized if he doesn’t. This happened to Trey Flowers recently.

In BB's head no former UDFA who turned himself into a very good player is worth even that. C'mon venecol rework those second and third years we want the hometown discount.

Well I'm not going to feel sorry for the players because they don't give back those hefty SB's ie.. when they sign on the dotted line.
