I've been reading that the book on Mac is to blitz him and do it a lot. And that he struggles against the blitz.

But does he?

Looks like pretty much the same QB to me when blitzed or not.

Very powerful insight indeed. Don’t let other coaches see this stat

I think most QB’s struggle against the blitz until the team gets a slot WR (Welker/Julian type) that knows how to get open quickly. Patriots needs one. Jocoby‘s play is similar to Troy Brown (reliable but take longer to get open).

So, according to this Mac is

5th in Blitz Comp %
11th in % Differential (The difference between his % when blitzed vs not)
10th in Blitz Yards

But, keep in mind his normal completion % is already pretty high, 4th in the league, so it's difficult to improve upon. Of the guys in the top 10 in overall completion percentage only he and Kyler Murray have a better completion % when blitzed vs when they're not.

It will get more difficult for Mac in the stretch run as opponents fine-tune strategies to throw him off. That's where the running game and play action can help; the key will be not getting behind more than one possession. I'd be concerned about variations on delayed blitzes he's not seen much of, if at all.

Jones and his Patriots teammates haven't consistently burned defenses who do turn up the heat. When blitzed, Jones averages 6.7 yards per attempt (20th in the NFL), and he has a quarterback rating of 81.0 (18th). Those are significantly lower figures compared to when Jones isn't blitzed (7.6 yards per attempt, 102.0 rating).

Over the last month, with the Patriots offense rolling, Jones has a yards-per-attempt figure (6.2) and a rating (73.2) against the blitz that are actually worse than his season-long numbers.

Am I reading this blitz passer rating right? 20 players with a QB rating of 110+ against the blitz and 28 guys with a 100+ rating?

Seems the way to beat any QB is to blitz them a lot.

He seems fine as long as he sees the blitz coming. Where i get confused is how much of these sacks like the ones against atl is he supposed to be reading pre snap and how much are on the ol / blocking rb. Thats the most unsettling portion of his game to me right now.

Nothing special about that take, thats usually a good play against rookie quarterback, disguise the coverages and blitz him. Works against most.

Pressure bothers Jones like it does most. He took a couple of big losses holding on too long last game. I have not noticed him throwing the ball away enough or—better yet—throwing into the blitz to the vacated spot for a big play. Titans D is formidable and it will be a test for Mac and the offense which has been inconsistent of late.

I think Giardi might have read that wrong. The site I posted up top says 5 of Mac's 8 INTs were NOT against the blitz, and the other 3 were. It does say Ryan has 7 INTs vs blitz. And it's actually Brady that has 5 INTs vs blitz, the second most in the league.

Also says 4 of Mac's 14 TD were vs blitz.

70% completion and 7.36 YPA on 28 dropbacks vs 2+ blitzers
75% completion and 5.75 YPA on 4 dropbacks vs 3+ blitzers
Has not faced 4+ blitzers yet.

Mac has also been blitzed 109 times out of 270 drop backs.

Titans defense is tough. Their offense with the injuries not so much but if we can move the ball consistently on them tomorrow that's a great sign for the rest of the season.

He actually has the second most INT’s vs the blitz in the NFL (5, Ryan has 7). So he definitely needs to improve vs the blitz.

According to the site above it's Brady that has the second most INTs vs blitz (5). Mac has 3. So one of them is not right :)

FWIW, per Football Outsiders: the Patriots O starts off with the best average field position in the NFL, starting at the 32.2. The Patriots D also has the fourth-longest field to defend, with opponents starting at their 25.8.

Traits of a smart football team. I'm surpised the #'s are already that good after such a rough start turnover wise

He has three touchdown passes and a league-high five interceptions against the blitz, as well as seven sacks.

Jones’s 71.1 passer rating against the blitz ranks 29th out of 33 quarterbacks.

Here is the same stat, so someone is wrong. The Falcons handled Jones pretty well and pressured him effectively. Will be interesting to see how the Titans play him. I don’t think they can rely on the remains of their offense though. Jones has been awesome but the biggest tests lie ahead.

It's not like he got better at it, he was killing the blitz week1 and week2 out of the gate.

Now undo/get the bad coaching out he got in week3 to force deeper passes.

Yeah someone is off. Or “blitz” means something different for each source who knows.

He doesn't seem to see delayed blitzers, even when they're in his line of sight. The first time he sees them is when they're hitting him. He looks too focused downfield, needs to take a peak after so many seconds.

A safety blitz that was very similar to the one we seen against the Falcons caught him again today.
