Mcgrone/Bledsoe what’s the plan?

They can request it or force the issue by sitting out.
I’m having some difficulty getting my head around how sitting out will force the issue of not wanting to be on IR. If they’re on IR aren’t they basically sitting out? If they don’t do what they’re supposed to be doing about IR or studying they hurt themselves more than they hurt the team. So exactly how does that work to force the issue?

Sitting out was a poor choice of words... by that I meant refusing to participate in team activities or being part of the team. That's pretty much a good way to get traded or cut, but that's a double-edged sword best not used unless the player is very talented and has a good chance of ending up on another team.

Roger that. My immediate reaction would be to play hardball and suspend them. They have absolutely no leverage, all they can do is screw themselves. Amidst all the brouhaha glad to see we have some possible depth in this NFL season of attrition.. McGrone is an intriguing prospect.

Dugger ran a 4.49s 40. Everything I find about McGrone says he was 4.67 to 4.8. What's your source?

That 4.67 was post knee injury in high school, I believe. If you watched him play real time at Michigan or watch his college highlights, it is obvious that he runs better than a 4.67 guy, and 4.8 is absurd. He’d immediately be their fastest LB, or close to it (Collins).

That article just speculates that McGrone might be as fast as Devin Bush's 4.43s. Unfortunately, McGrone's later measured times are 4.67s to 4.8s.

McGrone first got onto the radar after his freshman season, when he caught Rivals analyst Josh Helmholdt's eye at the Best of the Midwest Combine, earning "newcomer to know" status:

Looking every bit his listed 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, McGrone has an excellent linebacker frame with long arms. He tested really well, running in the 4.5 range for the 40-yard dash, then went out and made one-on-one work look very easy – which is difficult to do from the linebacker position.
He posted the best SPARQ score among rising junior linebackers at the Opening Columbus regional that May, earning top ten underclassman performer honors from Scout's Allen Trieu.

4.67 was one 40 time in high school, 6 months after surgery for an ACL tear. I don’t know where you found 4.8 but to even use that number is ridiculous, if you’ve watched him play once.

Don't think he was ever formally timed.

Here's another one that to your point projected him at 4.45 to 4.63:

His coach in the clip linked earlier in this thread - claims a 4.40 (which admittedly seems unlikely)

Regardless of what his 40 time is, the kid can fly. All you have to do is watch some film and see him jam sideline to sideline. He’s got some serious torque to him. Curious to see how well he sheds or avoids blocks in the pro game. Probably gonna have to wait until next preseason though, unless the staff thinks he can bring something to the table that Munson can’t.

But McGrone is coming off a second torn ACL in 5 years, one on each leg. You hope he still has that speed, but don't be surprised if he's a bit slower now.

McGrone is basically a bit bigger and a bit faster than Dugger. He's on the light side for a prototypical Pats MLB though. Some people say he's a potential Hightower replacement but that's a bit hard to see in the current system. Maybe more a Chung type box safety?

McGroan isn't as suited for a role as a Box/SS like Chung, at least as far as any middle/deep-third responsibilities are concerned, as he is for a role as a sideline-to-sideline, gap-shooting chaser with coverage responsibilities in the shallow third of the field... i.e.: a typical 4-3 WLB with some SLB duties... Don't think he's stout enough right now to handle the MLB/ILB role here.

Coming straight out, I’d more than likely agree. Especially without a true NT or guys on the DL occupying blockers so he can clean up. Only thing that has me holding out hope is that he has had the benefit of getting to know the playbook, getting his debit right and hitting the weight room this whole season. He’s not far off from Mayos size, being just an inch shorter. Two blown ACL’s really kill the excitement, but for a 5th rd. flier, I’ll take it!

a typical 4-3 WLB

But we don't really have anyone playing that role right now. Technically Judon is listed as our WLB, backed up by Perkins, who hasn't seen the field. But Judon at 275 lb is a quite different weight class. Dugger, covering TE's, is about the closest we have to a sideline-to-sideline DB.

Saw mcgrone's tape... Wow.. if only he has that burst he could be our Micah Parsons...

That is correct. There is no perfect guy. Anyone can shoot holes in any player. He is too slow, he is not big enough, he can not go sideline to sideline, he is not instinctive, on and on. Very easy to throw out criticism. The trick is finding football players, not looking at combine stats. Some people are naturally enthralled with details and stats, but there is no perfect player. McGrone is a football guy. The quicker guys tend to blow out their ACLs, when a player is quick and big like McGrone, blowing out an ACL is more of a risk. McGrone is a very exciting prospect, but can he stay healthy? That is what is in question, not if he is 20 lbs. heavier than Chung or 20lbs lighter than Hightower.

Roger that. My immediate reaction would be to play hardball and suspend them. They have absolutely no leverage, all they can do is screw themselves. They’re on IR, not getting paid, team still controls their rights and their market value is evaporating faster than dry ice in the Sahara sun. Good luck with that.
They might get a reduced salary, but IR players get paid.

I wasn't trying to shoot holes in McGrone - just wondering how he would fit in our current system. But if there is one thing Bill is good at, it is using the player to his best advantage. Might take him a while to figure that out (see Chung) but eventually he will.

I didn't think you were shooting holes.

That comment is directed at others who think they are make a living shooting holes, rarely being positive unless the player is All Pro. Most guys do not make it in the NFL, more players are drafted than spots available - so criticizing will always be more right than wrong, especially when the criticism is the 5th round and above.

Yep, that’s why I said suspend them. Conversation is about a player not wanting to be on IR holding out by not participating. I said suspend them, so they aren’t getting paid for not working. As I said, they have no leverage beyond their ability to cut off their nose to spite their face.
