With Gilmore gone. JC Jackson needs to be signed long term...

He’s going to cost a lot. Franchise tag wouldn’t surprise me.

Pay JC the 5 year fair market contract extension. The Pats D does not work AT ALL without an elite man CB1. I don't want another dean pees-like bad defense that can never stop 3rd down.

If you’re paying the QB peanuts on a rookie deal, it would make sense to pay market for one of the most essential positions, CB1. But I don’t know...it seems that paying a lot for great players is shunned here, in favor of paying a lot for badly flawed tight ends and #2 receivers.

JC has all the leverage now, they have nobody behind him. I think Bedard said that the franchise tag for CB is around 18M the 1st year and 22M the 2nd. That’s 40M in 2 years. I can see his camp asking for something like 4 years 70M if not more.

Gilmore was the highest paid CB in the league when the Patriots signed him. Do you want me to go find the post saying New England OVERPAID him?

The good & bad thing about JC playing an entire season as CB1 is he’ll be a safer investment. If the INT leader since entering the NFL proves he can limit WR1s & be the CB1 for an elite man defense he’s going to cost a fortune.

If they let him go next year, BillB is a dope.
You do understand the player has some say in all of this, right?

If he doesn't like the pay he can just extend an injury recovery like Gilmore or make himself a PITA like Jamaal Adams.

Turns out when there's lots of money to be had these options become pretty attractive.

The reality of the salary cap means you can't just back up the Brinks truck every time there's a player you'd like to keep.

A lot of what happens next depends on how the player and his agent plays their cards.

I would make him a slightly "team friendly" offer right now....we could get Jackson signed long term for 1-2 million less annually than what the market will likely throw at him in March.

Something like Xavien Howard kind of money...5 years/75 million..... I think Jackson could command 17M/AAV in March....

I wonder if he’d take 4/60 if you offered it tomorrow.

He said he'd lay this game for free

Should offer 5/75 ASAP to JC Jackson, like this afternoon. See if he'll take it. Pats are messing up their personnel giving away Gilmore and their entire defense is predicated on an elite CB1.

It's probably about fully guaranteed money. Howard's was $27M. Lattimore got the highest at $44M (Cornerback Contracts and Salaries | Over The Cap).

I would imagine Jackson and his agent are going to ask for somewhere around $40M fully guaranteed (Byron Jones got that from the Dolphins) depending on how much the cap increases.

The Pats will need to lock up a #1 CB, but I am not sure Jackson is that guy. I think he is going to get far more than he is worth. Not sure who they might go after, but I am not convinced it it is Jackson.

Yep, defense will regress big time if he walks and McCourty situation up in the air. The Dean Pees era will return.

McCourty and Jackson both leaving in the same year is horrifying. Who the hell besides Judon will be worth a damn on that defense?

No mention of Josh McDaniels. I think dropkicks has been hacked. @Ian may need to review this
