Gilmore traded to Carolina

Talking heads are saying key veterans departing doesn’t make Bill look good.

Moving on from Gilmore is the correct decision. I didn’t feel he played well last season before the injury, seemed he’d lost a step and felt we were at the “year early/late” stage.

The frustrating part is that he wasn’t moved last season, but it’s hard to know what the offers were. I’m willing to bet they weren’t much better than a 3 or 4 based on his contract and drop off in on-field performance.

Wish they could’ve got more than a 6th, but the window to move him would’ve been last season if we wanted better return.

6th rounder. Sheesh.

Wonder what it would have been if he was traded in 2020 or if he didn't turn 31, blow out his quad, not show up in TC and play at all in 2021 and lastly want for more money.

All of those factors greatly depreciated Gilly's trade value.

d%#*!@t.

It's math. it sucks.

Pats had 54k in cap money left and had to pay Gilmore 388k/week. Someone had to go/restructure. They weren't giving him 15/per, so he had X number of games left here - X being somewhere between 6 and 11. They apparently like what they're seeing in their secondary, so with all of the uncertainty, Gilmore became the odd man out.

If he comes back week 7, plays on his current contract through the year and isn't massively extended...I don't know.

And yeah, apparently the Brady reunion did jack sh*t for the morale on this forum.

The regular crowd is just as negative and toxic as they’ve ever been.

New norm, I guess.

Well maybe, but once the pats said he would be released, his value went way down. Trying to swing something higher than a 2023 6th, teams will just say, uh yeah we will wait till he is cut.

People who said to trade him last year and back in March were, as usual, dismissed as idiots/whiners cuz Bill has six rings.

Just like those dumb BRADYITES! who thought Bill botched this by spending a record amount on FAs but didn’t take care of his star CB. And those suggesting he wasn’t playing due to his contract - and not injury - were just “people desperately attacking Bill” up until yesterday.

Some of the issue is the pats ran out of money this year. Some of it, was yeah if he was going trading him last year would have been better. Not just a 6th, but a 6th two years from now. Its basically a box of footballs.

Take #1: A 2023 sixth round? The Patriots got TOOK! He would've gotten two firsts and a WR if they'd traded him last year! Plus everyone left here at the CB position sucks! I mean Sherman outplayed all of them last weekend for the Bucs with all those tackles he made!

Take#2: What a steal! Carolina is a paper tiger who will crash back to earth next year facing a harder schedule - that will be like a 5th round pick by 2023 plus there's definitely a hidden trade to use that extra money this year to bring in a legit #1 WR!

Anything I missed on the two ends of the spectrum?

wow, i didn't realize how STACKED Carolina's secondary is:

Would you have given Gilmore 15/per for 2 or 3 years at this point?

Asking sincerely.

Belichick allows Gilmore to play out his contract: he gets criticized for not getting something for him during the season.

Belichick trades him mid season: he get criticized for giving up on this year.
There's no win here. It's either pay him what he wants or don't.

Gilmore will help Carolina, especially later in the year when they play Tampa in late December. By then, the Panthers should get Jaycee Horn back, so it would be interesting seeing Brady vs Gilmore, Henderson, Horn, and Chinn.
Assuming he can still play after his decline and then injury last year.

I see it as the opposite in market dynamics. His trade value went up as it had no where else to go but.

GB and CAR prob offered 7th rounders. By threatening to release him to the free market that allows Gilly to be in a position to accept the best possible offer which by default creates a bidding war for his services. I think teams would rather give up low draft picks than money.

So after the NEP float out the news they'll just release him, CAR bumps up their offer to a 6th which was clearly the best offer for him available.
