I don’t like to say I am happy about a loss, but I feel encouraged about this team even in a loss. I never thought this could be a Super Bowl contender this year, but we are starting to see a lot of the building blocks for the future here. A few thoughts:

  • I felt that Belichick ran a great defensive game plan. The Pats basically took away Godwin. Except for two back to back fairly big plays, Godwin did nothing for the rest of the night. They basically took away Evans. Sure he had seven catches, but most were shorter passes and not really back breaking plays. They did force Brady to go to his third and fourth option a lot. Luckily for the Bucs, his third and fourth option were AB and Fornette otherwise, the Pats might have shut the Bucs out.
  • I said before the game if the Bucs rushed for 120 plus non-garbage time yards, the Pats had a realistic shot of winning the game. Well, the Bucs had 119. If the Pats just gave up one more yard on the ground, they would have won. :) Belichick came into the game daring the Bucs to run the ball. It did hurt them early with a couple big plays and on several third downs, but it certainly helped slow down the game.
  • People this week talked about how Brady knows everything about Belichick and there is nothing Belichick could throw at Brady that he could be tricked by. Well, I guess Belichick does still have a few tricks up his sleeves. And Brady's offensive line clearly are not as well versed in Belichick. Brady can know what Belichick is trying to do with the amoeba defense, but there is no way he can know for sure on every play who will be rushing and who will be dropping back in coverage.
  • Props to the secondary. They have gotten a lot of flack so far, but they were great last night.
  • I still don't know why they don't get Kendrick Bourne involved. The guy just seems to make plays when they give him the ball.
  • Until they fix the o-line problems, they need to run a lot spread with Jones in the shotgun. The play action doesn't work if you cannot run the ball and you are asking the play to develop too slowly and have Jones turn his back to the line. Jones is just more comfortable in the shotgun and allows him to process things quickly. As Collinsworth pointed out, he looks like Brady when he is in the shotgun.
  • One area where Jones appears to be already better than Brady is being able to keep his composure when he is hit a lot. The guy is unflappable. He has been hit more in the last two weeks than many QBs get hit in a half a season. Yet he wasn't rattled at all. He has no problem standing in there and making plays while a defender is coming down on him.
  • The Bucs threw everything at Jones in terms of blitzing. They ran a lot of blitzing combinations and, other than the INT which was an ill-advised throw into coverage, Jones was near perfect against the blitz. Another Brady trait he seems to have.
  • Matt Judon is quickly becoming a defender that teams have to scheme against. At least in the passing game. He improved this week vs. the run, but he is still a liability at times there. But when he is rushing the passer, the only answer the Bucs seemed to have was just hold him and hope the refs don't call it. And they got away with a lot of holding on Judon.
  • The Pats defense has its flaws especially against the run, but if you take away the Mac Jones pick six and the Pats would be top three in points allowed for the season thus far. They have yet to allow an opponent to score more than 19 points yet. Bend don't break is in full effect.
  • I am still extremely concerned about the o-line. No one is playing well right now. Can Trent Brown returning really fix all the problems? I still think you move him to the LT position, move Wynn inside, and move Onwenu to RT when he get back. The fact that they haven't toyed with the line up while he is out gives me some hope that they might. I am assuming the last thing Belichick would want to do is changing the line up week in and week out. I would assume he would want to make a line up change once and could be waiting for Brown to get back into the line up.
  • With less than a month away from the trade deadline, I see the Pats' biggest needs as right or left tackle, a run stuffing LB, and a third down back.
  • This season has a lot of 2001 potential in it. No I don't think the Pats will win the Super Bowl. But this is a team with 11 new starters like 2001 with a young, first time QB who started the season looking awful and could potentially gel and become a solid or even top team by the second half of the season. It has a bend, don't brea defense.

You mean against the offense? I don't think so. The rain played a factor and Brady looked emotional as ****.

I have seen Brady throw for four TDs in a blizzard in Chicago and almost single handily lead his team back from a 28-3 half time deficit in the Super Bowl. Stop making excuses.

I guess that means he needs to throw 4TDs in every game then with that logic. He sailed many passes in the first half and the rain caused 3+ drops including one in the end zone. The Pats D played very well but I wouldn't use the words 'blue print'. Was a great game.

I grew up on Frank Gifford. Any insight into the game is appreciated.
I remember watching Inside the NFL when Len Dawson and Nick Buoniconti hosted. In an hour we got 45 minutes of game highlights and 15 minutes of talk. Now we're stuck with 6 blowhards that give us 15 minutes of game highlights and 45 minutes of hot air.

I don’t think we were competitive because the D played out of their mind but because the Bucs O played very sloppy.
Not competitive? We were kicking to take the lead with 50 seconds left. It was a masterful defensive game plan and the Bucs played sloppy? Maybe give us some credit....Were you happy at all with the way Mac played? Look, I am never happy with a loss, but most people were expecting a blow out and I came away from last night seeing that we can compete with these guys. Just my take.

They were two drops away from scoring 30. We saw last night how important Gronk is. Their TE were invisible

And you can point to blown coverages that if they didn't happen, the Bucs might not have scored more than 12 points. This is football. That is how things go.

I think we need to credit the Pats defense. They didn't really confuse Brady with all of the looks but they made it more difficult for him for sure.

from Lazar:

1. Pats HC Bill Belichick Delivers Masterful Game Plan Against Tom Brady

The Hoodie delivered a fantastic game plan to limit Brady and the Bucs offense on Sunday. It was laid out pretty clearly: man coverage (CBs shadowing Bucs WRs), show pressure but only bring four (simulated pressures), and drop players in the way of the in-breaking routes.

There's no question that things are looking much better this year. We have a good young QB and the future is brighter.

Wish Thuney was still here.

I am by nature overly optimistic, but if we don't fumble in the Miami game(Harris) or in the Saints game(Smith) or last night (JJ) those games could have all been wins....I know, I know....lol....but I agree with you, things are looking better. I also liked that Hunter got involved a little more last night and Jonu caught a TD pass.

Wish Thuney was still here.
Dabruinz and myself were really pushing for us to resign him....would have made a huge difference.....hoping Trent can come back next week and stay healthy....he really makes such a huge difference....Owenu had his worst game as a pro last night....Andrews is ok and a good leader, but when he goes against a dominate NT like last night, it's a mismatch and he gets pushed back.

I only take issue with a couple of comments, and agree with most of it. Brady used to get clobbered and stand in there like no other. This is why the Giants said he was the best when it came to that. Remember the 2015 loss to Denver in the AFCCG? I've never seen a QB hit like that and stand in to make the plays.

The OLine is still suffering from having a rookie QB back there. When Mac started making plays, the Bucs stopped blitzing, and Mac got a lot more time. As Mac improves and figures out how to set up his OL, and how to step into the pocket, the OL will look better too. But the main thing is Mac needs to be more decisive. He has some wide open guys out on the flanks, Jonnu Smith mainly, but he has his eyes trained downfield. Mac is his own best help in this regard. He can help the OL.

Blueprint talk is always insane because Belichick has managed to hold Mahomes down for 2-3 quarters multiple times now and no one else can replicate it because it’s not anywhere that simple.

I don’t. I think it was very similar to the Miami game. They allowed almost 400 yds of offense. With 3 drops that account for at least 50 yds. I don’t call that masterful. I don’t think Brady was really confused by anything. He was inaccurate though missed multiple open receiver. In my opinion, the game being close has more to do about the Bucs offense that the pats defense.

last week the Bucs D allowed 407 yds to Stafford and every one was saying how bad they were and today the pats allowed 380 and we call it masterful. The difference, the Rams receivers didn’t drop TDs.

The D was good but not exceptional. In my opinion calling the gameplan masterful is an overreaction.

I feel much better about this team than I did at the same time last year. I think they have the QB of the future and have added enough weapons to be in position to make a run in the future.
