No, 2026. 5th year option won’t be $50m. It’ll be higher than what he’s being paid now, no doubt, but not top QB salary. 5th year option for 2022 QB salaries is 18.858M, it’ll increase for 2025 of course but not to 30-50m. And most likely that would be the point where the team would work out an extension, so that would keep the 2025 cap charge relatively low.
I was just saying the 5th year option is 2025 not 2026. I think I misread your post.

Sure. But I like I said, it is about expectations. It is a "win now" league and I think most fans are anxious to see us get back into the post-season. I agree that it is another rebuilding year and also a year to see which FAs we hit on as well.
Thing is, a lot of enemies of the team (fans of other teams, Boston sports media idiots) pump up the expectations so they can gloat if we don't hit the bar they set. We need to pump the brakes a bit, IMO.

Do they, though? Overthecap estimates our 2022 cap space at $20.5m when taking into account the top 51 rule. That’s 18th out of 32 so middle of the pack. But the rankings don’t take into account the specific circumstances for each team:
  • The Patriots have a lot of upcoming free agents: Gilmore, McCourty, Hightower, JC Jackson, Philips, Trent Brown, White, Karras, and Slater as upcoming free agents. The first 6 of those guys are part of the team’s core.
  • McCourty’s situation itself is unique. His deal voids automatically like Brady’s did. If he’s not extended prior to free agency, $4.3m of cap charges are accelerated to 2022 - effectively leaving the team with 16.2m in cap space which would knock the Patriots to 22nd out of 32 teams.
Point is, I’m concerned most of the cap space will be spent resigning these guys or signing what they hope are competent replacements. And therefore very little of the cap space will be left for actual upgrades. Extending Wynn would be the easiest way open up a whole lot more space.

They‘ll need to start hitting in the draft more to get real improvements. Mac and Barmore look good so far and hopefully Rham will get out of the doghouse; that’s a good start. We need that to continue.
Agree with what you wrote, so I'd amend my statement to say I think the Pats are in good shape for a team that was said to have gone "all in" this season. I also factor in that we expect the cap to rise a bunch due to full stadiums and the new media deals. It'll be interesting to see what vets they re-sign. I suspect it'll be fewer than we think, and they'll have to roll the dice on younger emerging players, but that's all a part of being in a rebuild cycle.

Durant (#39) was graded higher than Wynn (#55).
I was impressed with Durant. Shocked he was listed as a Guard when they acquired him. At that height, it just screams Tackle to me. But, good for him. KC needed all the help they can get on that OL with their rental of the overrated Brown at LT, so he would have appeared to be a good option for them sometime in the future.

In the case of da Jete, less talent than that...

Quick question, HPF2: I'll be in Hawaii (for the very first time) for two weeks beginning Saturday... You don't know of any bars on the Big Island offering the Sunday Ticket with an early-morning breakfast, do ya?

There is very little in this world that would make me say "F football.". Hawaii is one of them. I have been a few times, though never the big island. Spend every possible minute exploring Hawaii. My favorite place in the world.

Cap'n, although I don't know the answer to your question (about the bar), if you can rent a car for a couple of days it is worth it. The Big Island (by far my favorite island in Hawaii) is like a trip to 7 or so different places each with a different climate: wonderful beaches and snorkeling in fairly dry climate; rainforests with some of the heaviest rainfall in the world, a mountainous cattle raising regions that reminds one of Montana, the volcanic regions with active volcanoes, the Kona coffee growing regions, the alpine climate of Mauna Loa, and more. Enjoy ;)

Really want to see this kid on the field.

I had him in all of my mocks (after I settled on who was who and who might fit), right after Stevenson. Was bummed when they missed on him, and am thrilled now that they have him.

It's a project, certainly, but he has the raw talent to play at a very high level. I expect to see him on the field in a couple/few weeks.

With Trent Brown likely out Sunday Durant will be getting the start at RT. I'm curious to see how he plays. He had a clean sheet vs. the Dolphins on 23 snaps with no pressures, hits, sacks or penalties. Did the Chiefs trade a 23 year old tackle that can play for a 7th round pick? Seems unlikely but crazier things have happened with developmental OL here.

Durant was expendable because the Queefs did the smart thing and drafted Trey Smith, who was therefore also available when Bill & the New Minions foolishly threw away their pick on UDFA-talent Billy Sherman.

Queefs not only keep the superior player (to both Durant & Sherman), they now receive our 7th-rounder next year as a reward for not trying to out-think everyone else.

Wonder if those grades reflect more highly of Durant, or more poorly of Wynn...

Don't know WTF's wrong with Cachoo, but he's missing a golden opportunity to justify his draft position and shut up his critics such as me...

If Cachoo's willing, ready & able, then the starting 5 with the best chance at continuity is Wynn - Onwenu - Andrews - Mason - Cachoo

If Cachoo's a no-show again, then it's Wynn - Karras - Andrews - Mason - Onwenu

Goes without saying that Herron should never be on the same field with Mac for the foreseeable future...

I'll go with Scarnecchia over the Chiefs people, thanks very much. If you don't think Scar is blessing BB's OL picks, you're delusional.
