2000 was the last time Week 1 began labor day weekend. Given how things turned out beginning 2001, I can't complain!

Their rationale was too many people travel for the end of summer long weekend and would prefer the season start after the unofficial end of summer. We know they don't give a shard about what the people want. I suspect tv ratings would be the real reason.
