Game Day Thread Official Preseason Game Day Thread- Pats @ Giants

THIS IS OUR LIVE GAME DAY THREAD:

This is where we gather to follow things on Game Day. Obviously, emotions tend to be high so if anyone gets a little crazy, the use of the “Mute” button is encouraged on anyone who may be annoying to you to control your experience and to allow the moderators to also enjoy the game.

At the same time, please take a deep breath before over-reacting for the sake of making this a pleasant experience for everyone.

2. In skimming the thread I saw several blame Cam for that pick. That's just BS. He put the ball right on the receiver's hands into a small window. That was really just a great play by Martinez.

The trouble is, Kendrick Bourne was open by -at least- 20 yards down the left sideline. Nobody within a mile of him.
that’s why we blame Cam. He put the ball into a small window, instead of throwing to a receiver with nobody within a mile of him. Result was an INT instead of a TD.

Thoughts on offense. For the first time since TC Jones went through some growing pains. I don't blame Jones for them. He clearly hasn't been exposed to enough NFL starter level situations. Doing it with our 2s against their 1s wasn't a fair shot. We have seen how fast he learns. I would love to see him face the 1s in game action next week and see his growth (this time with our own 1s). Clearly Bill didn't prepare him well for this moment and put him not only in a position to learn, but fail. That isn't automatically wrong coaching. As it has been done before, but I don't like it and I don't thinm it is the best option.

Agholor is going to have some issues for a while. Still seems lost. I think he'll get there, but it is annoying.

Taylor to me is a guy who must be played 10 snaps a game or you don't get value. To me from a single snap vs snap perspective I think he is the best back we have. He has the juice. Someone mentioned Lewis, and I see it the same. Pre injury Lewis. Put him on a pitch count and he will be a spark for this offense when needed.

The patriots need both TEs to be healthy or they will have issues. Their WRs aren't going to be near good enough, even when Agholor gets it. We need to win with our TEs and RBs creating mismatches with an occasional WR thrown to.

Hopefully we can get some help from our STs and D. Cause this O will need it this year. But add on Jones next year on year 2 and a number 1 WR and I think we got something.

WTF is Wade supposed to do there? He was literally pushed down by the Giants' receiver. That is text book Offensive Pass Interference.
Wade was lost before the goal line, scrambling to try to recover. He took himself deep enough behind the receiver that he wouldn’t have had a play on the catch no matter what. When he fell I wondered at first if he had tripped himself trying to get back into the play. I suspect the lack of a flag was because he was so off balance it didn’t take a push, just waving in his direction was enough for the breeze to take him off his feet. The official couldn’t bring himself to bail him out after he got so out of position and crossed up.

re TEs, not both. Three. Asiasi showed up tonight. I’m thinking he hasn’t before this not because he wasn’t cutting it but rather because he wasn’t as much of a priority as exploring other aspects of the offense.

and that’s also a point about your thoughts on offense. Mac had a couple of drives that seemed to click fairly well, and others that really didn’t. Why? I’ve got to think it was the play calling, that Bill had Josh testing different aspects of his game. And cooking up some servings of humble pie.

Bill is a smart guy. He sees what we all see. He knows what Cam is. He has been figuring out what Mac is. At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes all in on Mac and this year’s surprise cut turns out to be Cam. Hoyer is a very well established backup, and Stidham could be back as soon as late October, plus he can sign a QB to the PS as insurance. Would not surprise me at all.

Was on a road trip during the game so tried to listen to the game on SiriusXM. The Pats radio team (Zo & Bob) are horrible, in no way could you follow what was happening in the game. Never told basic stuff such as down, distance, field position, who was on the field, etc. They acted like two guys drinking beer, watching the game on TV and commenting on plays (nice catch, he should have had it.....). New England deserves better. I switched to the Giants broadcast to at least be able to follow the action (though according to the NY team, the Pats committed a penalty on every.single.play).
It was an exhibition game. It was not a regular season game. They call the games differently, as a result. There's no "deserve" problem.

Even just looking at that window, the throw was off. It wasn't off by any ridiculous amount, but a better placed ball would not have been picked.

Bart Simpson and a chalkboard needed.

Running backs look so good and happy to see Asiasi have some good catches. I still think Wilkerson is worth keeping in some form be it on the 53 or PS

Did Mac had at least one snap with the 1s?
Would have wanted to see him at least one drive getting a bit in game rythm with them and not only with players that most probably won't be on the team next week, Cam didn't show me anything to be excited about when it comes to passing, what was it 2 of 5 for 10 yards?
INT is not completely on Cam because Martinez made a great play, but the throw was behind Meyers and he had to turn 180° around to be able to get a hand on it while he was supposed (at least it seemed so) to run a seam route, you could have placed it over the shoulder or hit the open guy waiving his hands next to Meyers, however it does not come as a surprise with Cam that he does not see the field well and isn't accurate, we will have to deal with it anyway.

Mac seemed off at times and hold to the ball too long, let him experience it asap so he can learn from it, he has to go through more in the coming years. But he has had also some nice throws out there, still long way to go. However as said I would have wanted to see him with 1st team OL and Receivers not only with 2s and 3s.
Asiasi had some nice cathes, have counted 3 or 4, seemed like he got all of what was thrown to him.
Running game is very good, also starting OL, from the backups Herron seemed at times completely lost as RT, seen him several times being put on his ass while Cajuste on the LT was pretty solid, at least I have not noticed anything bad from him. The others are well yeah better hope they don't need to play...
Pass rush will be fun this year if they can stay healthy but run defense is still a concern, same with the pass defense as long as Gilmore is not available we will have issues in coverage.
Jackson had a horrible night, I remember him only being late and having allowed a ton of catches got the bend-don't-break-defense vibes watching him running around like a lost chicken on the field. Wade didn't look good on the outside either.

I hope Cam can step up now because I don't want to see again his play from last year

I tried to concentrate more on the back up OL and I thought Cajuste did ok , possibly looking better than Herron now.

After this game, I am a little bit on the side of Cam starting, even tough I hate to say it. Mac needs a little bit more time to get used to the speed of the game and learn to throw the ball away. He definitely looked more like a rookie.

Cam still isn't good, but he is better than he was last year. I do blame him for that INT. If he had led Myers instead of forcing him to come back for the ball, the INT would not have been possible. Just a bad throw.

Explain to me how he can do that sitting on the bench? He won’t get used to the speed of the game running the scout team in practice. The guy needs to play and fail. No way around it. If it’s not this year, it will be next year and we would lose two years instead of one. Because don’t make mistake about it, we are going nowhere with cam

Tend to agree here , just think this is what the team will do. I really hope that Cam plays better than last year but how long does he get if the throws are low or wide of the mark. Miami will not be easy.

It’s more than obvious Cam is going to be the starter until BB is forced to pull him. I’m assuming that will happen sometime after the TB game. Maybe immediately after that game if we get clapped.

More time in the system and not being sacked because he held the ball will help him

1.) I do not remember seeing mccourty play much, if any, this preseason. clearly he is our starting free safety. Communication in the secondary has been spotty this preseason and mccourty solves that every time he is on the field! And maybe Ross or Bryant slides into the old Harmon position as backup.
Williams played the entire 4th quarter as the Free Safety after starting at outside CB. With Phillips and Duggar also in the fold in addition to McCourty there's enough position flexibility even if they also end up keeping guys like Bethel (think they will) and Davis, Ross or Bryant (don't know if they will).

Has there ever been a "smooth communicating" preseason? I cant remember one because it's always two things:

1) a huge assortment of different people playing different positions sometimes even at (seemingly) random such as Williams at FS last night. The playbook is hard enough for one position - try three or four.

2) the very vanilla coverages - not a lot (or sometimes any) doubling, complex man/zone combination looks, etc.

Agholor is going to have some issues for a while. Still seems lost. I think he'll get there, but it is annoying.
He reminds me of the trajectory Brandon LaFell took here. Started really slow, didn't have a lot in his route tree, drops - come about October he started becoming the physical outside guy they signed him to be, his confidence in the system grew and he was much more to his career averages regarding drops, etc.
