Kraft acknowledges drafting woes, says approach is changing

I'm curious, who knows (shouldn't the Pats know) who was responsible for finding undrafted Malcolm Butler and JC Jackson ? We should elevate that person and never draft corners again without that person's evaluation. Something is broken where the Patriot high draft CB picks use a broken system but our UDFAs can end up pro bowlers. Does anyone know who found Malcolm and JC Jackson ???
For Malcolm Butler it was Joe Judge who scouted him and called his college coach. Not sure if he’s the one who made the suggestion. I don’t know who it was for JC Jackson.

McDaniels....

Let's do some simple math...AGAIN:

7 draft rounds x Average NFL career 3.3 years = 23 players (in a perfect world).
NFL roster 53 + Practice Squad 12 = 65

Under perfect conditions, 65% of your roster needs to come from other than the draft.
Reality is more like 75% or more of your roster must come from other means.
Mathematically you CANNOT use the draft to build a complete roster.

This is what Belichick does so well. Build a roster despite poor draft position (or poor draft results).

Do the Pats need to improve their drafting? Absolutely.
Sometimes I think BB has distain for the draft because he knows people over value it (he calls it freebies).

I think Camren Williams found him. He does scouting in the SE

Thanks. So Camren should be recognized for finding a gem in Meyers. Too bad the scout who found Butler left . We shouldn't draft another CB or WR until the whole scouting system for these 2 positions is blown up, and improved or at worst just revert back to Belichick's original scouting system which over over-written in 2004.

I don't buy the argument to diminish the draft. The first 3 rings and later 3 rings, the rock foundation of those teams came from internally drafted guys. It's just we sucked drafting from 2005-2008 which led to a decade ring drought (and the draft drought now from 2013-present leading to fewer wins).

To me this signals that the Patriots will lean on positions they have drafted well in the past, for this draft. I expect both lines and the linebackers to be the focus of the draft.

1st rounders can max you at 5 years, 2nd 4 and so on....... what that says is you should have 9 1/2nd rounders on the roster before re-signing.

3-7 would be 4 years? So that's 20 players times a needed success factor. Ditto UDFA's

Figuring second contract guys has to work the CAP and first contract guys.

Where the difference lies in is Belichick doesn't have a magical fixation with "1st rounders" like some organizations.

Likewise, this mystifying concept of the draft from "the last five years" makes zero sense.

2016 guys are gone by now because we never had the money to re-sign. Ask Thuney about that.
2017 we had 4 total picks 3/3/6/7
2018/9/20 were never enough to overhaul the roster or even replace all the players that needed to go to financially support the rebuild.

From those selections, it looked as though "Nike" was making those picks.

It was a disaster. Onwenu is the only promising player.
Uche is a damn good player and the most athletic LB we have had in a long time (along with Jamie Collins)

Here’s the facts regarding Uche. He averaged 1 tackle per game on a team that couldn’t stop the run. That’s really bad. He had 1 sack in 9 games.

They wouldn’t have signed Judon if they saw he had upside and was the “most athletic LB” since Collins.

Right now, he’s a complementary player at best.

Yes but it's the job of the leader to have a great scouting organization. That leader is BB. Did Pioli and Caserio handle the overall management aof college and pro scouting? Yes but those orgs also had leaders who were responsible for making sure the regional scouts did their job.

Correct on the scouting dept. NE has one of the smallest as coaches are expected to also go on scouting trips/player evals

Caserio was the director of player personnel. So it was his department. If you are the CEO of a company, you don't micromanage every department. The buck stops with Belichick, but if Caserio was lapsing in his duties because his heart wasn't in it, it could have affected the drafts without Belichick's knowledge.

Not saying that is what happened, but it is a possibility.

Michel and Harry were garbage picks. We passed on all pro talents in that same position
Michel wasn't a garbage pick - he was a major reason why we won our last SB. Not really worth his draft slot though.

As for Harry well... shrug

I’m not mad about Michel either as he was arguably the next best back after Barkley. Harry on the other hand, had no business being the 2nd WR off of the board as he was consistently rated around the 5th WR on the board.

Seattle took Penny, who had no business being taken before Michel and Chubb.

We drafted Michel over his far superior teammate Nick Chubb who is an all pro 1500 yard rusher! Bad scouting!!! Cunningham over Dunlap all over again!

If we scouted the Georgia backfield, perhaps we should have taken the better back who always showcased far superior speed and athleticism and is now a top 3-5 RB in the NFL

Sony is a JAG

Except, of course, that Chubb and Michel were rated side-by-side, with Michel ahead of him more often than not, on almost every draft board.

Scouts don't have 20-20 hindsight - that's for super-scouts posting years later on message boards.

Michel wasn’t exactly a scrub in College. But Cunningham over Dunlap was way worse. Totally unacceptable.

Chubb had questions regarding catching out of the backfield as teams or media are putting way too much stock into. I think Bill wanted a guy who could catch and run like Kamara which Michel looked like in College. Unfortunately for us, Chubb is that guy and Michel isn’t which I put some blame on McDaniels.

Surprisingly, that's not true.

I just went back and looked again - the ratings were all over the place - I saw Harry at #2, #3, #4, #6. Metcalf was even more volatile.

And look, I've said it before: if I had been running the Pats draft that year, we wouldn't have taken Harry, Williams, or Froholdt, adn would instead have AJ Brown, DK Metcalf, and Hunter Renfroe - that's not hindsight, as I was screaming at the TV.

But I'm no draft expert - far from it.
