What if Mac Jones and Jaylen Waddle are available at 15?

Since we ae on the topic of Waddle and Jones, I think both were at the Senor Bowl week. I know Jones was there. Did any catch any comments on how they looked?

I know how Chris Simms ranked the QB's and Mills wasn't among his top 7. I know how BCG rated his QB's. But I haven't heard anything about the Senor Bowl practices and game. Any links or comments. Without a combine, what they did that week should be an important evaluation tool

BTW- the thought of drafting an OLman in the first 3 rounds fills me with dread. We are set at OT AND have depth. We are set at C AND have depth. We are set at starting OG's and only have Karras as any depth so we DO need help there. Secondary FA market could be a source, but I'd be OK with adding OG depth in the draft, but only from the 4th round down.

Yes, dilemma.

A difficult choice. If Pitts is there at 15, do you take him if you're the Pats, who just invested in the two top FA TEs on long contracts?

Is Pitts that good that you just can't pass it up, or do you go more to an area of need?
The Patriots aren't going to be running too many three tight end formations. Either one of the two expensive tight ends or the talented rookie spends a lot of time on the bench. We need whoever is picked at 15 to be on the field.

Norm, I'm not sure about that. Part of the emphasis of the power-running attack is the Big Set.

Trent Brown is signed for this year and they also have to make a decision on Wynn about picking up the 5th year option or extending him.

Trade down and take Kellen Mond? From what I saw, he looks good throwing to guys that were not open; perfect for the Patriots. Ha.

Anyway, I would be disappointed if the Patriots played the trade-down game here; let's not get cute with the extra pics. Pick quality at 15.

And that is why Brady bolted and we have to watch the playoffs sans a patriot’s team.

Wrong. We have heard many times through Brady's Tampa coaches that he wanted to try and win in a new system. The only way he was coming back to NE is if Belichick resigned and a new coach was hired.

Win in a new system, aka, play on a team
With real NFL talent.

Edelman was drafted to play WR.
The objective is to acquire a WR that would have an impact now.

449 yards and 1 TD in 3 seasons is not what everybody is looking for. We wont last until 2024 with falling down Mr McGoo.

I agree somewhat. Pitts is different - he might be the best pass-catcher on the board at the start of the draft.

The question becomes: how restricted are the Pats and other teams by tradition and position?

At this point, imho, the two biggest needs are a QB and MLB.
I believe it requires too much draft capital to move up to get one of the top ranked QBs. Maybe use 15 to get the best LB available. There should be plenty available if the mocks are anywhere near close to how the draft is going to play out. Then make a move at some point to get the best remaining QB. We all know that picking QBs is tricky, no guarantee that top picks are going to be successful or that mid-round picks can't be successful, hell, even late round QB picks can be hidden gems.
We need to look no further than TFB.

Part of what made the Ravens running offense so hard to stop in 2019 was the 3 TEs

I don't know enough about either player to make a value judgement. But if you think Jones can be a franchise QB, you take him because there is no guarantee you will ever be in another position any time soon to get a franchise QB. QB is the most important position in football by far and you always try to fill that need first.

Can you guys just **** off into the Brady subforum if you really want to go for round 396 of irrelevant and pointless speculation about football Jesus' departure ?

This thread is about the draft, Mac Jones and Waddle.

Then you are ignorant or blind.

Pitts will never fall that far down to 15th overall so the discussion is purely hypothetical (such as what one would do if they won the lottery). But for the sake of discussion, if Pitts falls that far down you take him and deploy him on the perimeter like a receiver while also giving him the year to learn how to play the TE position in the pros. He’s that great of a weapon. Gronk was used that way plenty of times before. After the season then you assess the position and decide whether to keep as is or try to move one of the two starters. The focus should be on getting one of the premiere QB prospects with their first rounder but if a special, standout talent like Waddle or Pitts falls to that spot then you make an exception. Many people make the mistake of believing you have to draft for need and not consider value. Damien Harris wasn’t a need when we drafted him two years ago into a loaded RB group but we’re glad we have him now.

You don't understand the upgrades that have been made or the offensive scheme that is being developed. We will run a 2 TE Offense combined with run heavy based on a great o-line. Agholor was brought in to take the top off the defense as he can run a 4.4.

Yeah I’m not sure what he’s smoking. It’s actually the opposite. Mond looked good throwing to guys who were wide open. Not so much when the windows got tighter.

can you put smith at WR? he’s more of a move TE anyway...

I don't know what videos you watch. The two I posted looked good in both areas. While most won't consider him as a top 5 guy in this draft, he still has good mechanics and may be a very good QB on the NFL.

Furthermore, the Pats wont stay in 2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB the whole game and for every opponent.

They will mix it up as always sometimes spreading out 4 - 5 wide.
