I didn't expect Gruden to go back to Carr. I thought he was ready to move on to one year of evaluation of Mariota followed by either Tannehill-esque revitalization or the opportunity to draft himself a QB.

Makes Mariota maybe someone available at the right price in March. More options are always good.

If the Browns go 11-5 and miss the playoffs in a 7 team format, I will feel physically sick for them.
Happens. Rarely, but we remember 2008.

I think any 11-5 team will make it this season, as I figure there’ll be a stumble or two in the final weeks.

Miami might win next week though. In which the scenario would happen.
I'm hoping they do and it knocks out the Ratbirds.

In order for that to happen the Fins would have to lose to Buffalo in the last week and one of Tenn, Clev or Indy lose both of their remaining games, all real possibilities.

There were two differences between this year and 2008. In 2008 there were only 6 teams making the playoffs and one of them was the 8-8 Chargers, who 'won' the AFCW.

A 10 or 11 win team in the AFC will miss the playoffs, while the four NFC East teams try to see who can lose the most games and still host a Wild Card game.
I was hoping to see a 6-10 team from the NFCE get in while 10-6 teams from the NFCW & NFCN miss the playoffs. If the Washington Waste lose to the Panthers it's possible for a 6-10 team to get in but Ariz, Chi and SF have folded down the stretch. It was close though.

Maybe Miami beats Buffalo the last week, because the Dolphins might need it, whereas Buffalo is resting for the playoffs.

I still can't believe that Miami pulled that game out.

First there was the great decision by Flores to take out Tua. He didn't learn that from Bill.
Then Fitzmagic happened.
Then the Raiduhs missed a key extra point.
Then the refs tried to pull an Indy and hand the game to Vegas.
Then Van Noise tried to hand it back with a dumb penalty.
Then Gruesome had the team take a knee instead of a TD that the Fins were trying to give him.
Then the Faiders took the dumbest penalty of them all.
Then the Vegas Vaginas lost and now have no date for the NYFL dance.

For those of you who may have doubted the strength of the 25 year curse that I put on the Oakland Crybabies in 2001, let this game be exhibit A

One of the things going against the Bills resting is that they can lose the tie-breaker to Tennessee. If the Titans lose to GB and get their 5th loss today that will take that advantage away from the Titans.

Another key to the Bills position today is the Indy@Pitt game. If Indy wins that they may have the tie-breaker vs the Bills with a win vs the Jags next week.

There is a very plausible scenario that the Browns miss the playoffs, even with a win today.
  • Ravens beat the Giants and Bengals.
  • Colts beat the Steelers and Jaguars.
  • Titans beat Houston next week.
  • Steelers beat Cleveland next week.
  • Dolphins beat Buffalo next week.
The last outcome may be the least likely, but it's not inconceivable. A Pittsburgh loss (Colts) and Titans loss (Packers) today - both very realistic - means Buffalo can clinch the #2 seed with a win tomorrow against the Patriots. With nothing for Buffalo to play for, a loss to the Dolphins in week 17 could definitely happen while resting starters. In fact, Buffalo may prefer to play Miami rather than Cleveland. (Insert 'integrity' comment here.)

Edit: in that case above Buffalo winning or losing in week 17 would mean the difference between the Bills playing Cleveland or playing Baltimore; a loss would push Miami up to the #6 seed (playing the Colts) and #5 Tennessee would play Pittsburgh. On the other hand a win over Miami knocks the Dolphins out and sets up #2 Buffalo vs Cleveland, #3 Indy vs Baltimore, and #4 Pittsburgh vs Tennessee.

But had there been a 7 team format in 08, we would have been in.

What happens if Indy wins the S and Pitt wins the N at 12-4 and Mia, Bal, Cle and Ten all end up at 11-5? Is that how the Browns are knocked out, even with a win vs Ten?

I hope my head doesn't explode.

Hang on a sec, I was working on something else....

Browns clinch a playoff spot today with a win (vs Jets), plus either a Colts loss (to Steelers) or Ravens loss (to Giants).

If Indy or Baltimore (but not both) lose today, they may be in trouble.

Let's say Indy loses today, Baltimore wins their last two, Browns win twice, and Tenn beats Houston next week. At that point if Miami beats Buffalo, the Colts are out.

If the Giants knock off Baltimore then the Ravens would pretty much need to count on Buffalo beating Miami next week.

A few weeks ago I was hoping for my dream scenario of the Ratbirds and Indiots both being knocked out, but that ship has sunk.

In this scenario Baltimore's head to head sweep is what does them in. Even though it is for a wildcard with teams from multiple divisions, the NFL still uses division tiebreakers to first eliminate a team from the three or more way tie first, by eliminating all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding.

Miami can easily be the odd man out too - even if the Giants beat Baltimore today.

Let's assume Cleveland will beat the Jets today and the Colts will beat Jacksonville next week. If Baltimore beats the Bengals next week while Buffalo beats Miami, then the Dolphins are eliminated - regardless of any other outcomes.

Tennessee elimination scenario:
  • Colts beat Jaguars
  • Ravens beat Giants, Bengals
  • Titans lose to Packers, Texans
  • Dolphins beat Bills

Also, Miami is in with a win, regardless of any other outcomes.

In the NFC the Bears are in (and Cardinals eliminated) with a Chicago win over the Jaguars today, and Arizona loss to the Rams next week.

Ravens elimination scenario, even if they win both remaining games:
  • Colts beat the Steelers and Brown beat the Jets today.
  • Next week: Browns beat Pittsburgh, Dolphins win, Tennessee beats Houston, and Indy beats Jacksonville.

Me neither. Raiders play no defense. They also should have scored the fcking TD instead of the field goal.

And now Cleveland will face more or less what Denver faced...

No 4 Wr in today s game Vs Jets...
