Hey, I've been on this board for 20 odd years now, and I have NEVER seen a week where the 2nd order of business each week was to talk about the NEXT week's opponent. (the 1st order of business, of course, is to pick apart the game just played like a thanksgiving turkey ;) ) So unless I've missed the thread, here's one (finally) that we can have a word about. I'll start the ball rolling.

1. The good news is that the Pats usually do well on short weeks because they are usually coached so well. I'm sure Bill had 90% of the game plan done before the Pats flew out to LA to play the Chargers

2. Other pieces of good news include being able to stay in LA and play in a stadium they are now familiar with. No WC flight. No turnaround. No sleep hangover. They also should be more confident about their own play, while still having a lot to prove over these last 4 games.

3. The bad news is that they are playing a team with more talent, and better coaching than what we saw last week. A team that is in the top 5 in BOTH offense and defense. A team well suited to stop the run, which is the only way the Pats offense seems to be moving the ball these days

4. If the Pats decide to pass the ball, the Rams will still have an edge with their secondary.

So what do we do. My mind goes back to a game where the Pats were in Pittsburgh and they had the best defense in the league and they had been DOMINANT against the run. So what did the Pats do. They came out with an offense that featured a NO huddle, 5 wide set, and simply passed them to death. Anyone else remember that game???

So here's the thing. The Rams are already great at stopping the run Given the short week I can only surmise that when you you are playing against a team who's passing attack is beyond abysmal, you just strengthen your already great run defense. But here's the thing. Cam is averaging about 70 passing yds a game over the last 2 games and a lot of that yardage came from YAC on throws at or behind the LOS. Pretty scary, right? BUT Cam is also the same QB who threw for 350+ against the Texans, and close to 400 against Seattle.

So folks, I wouldn't be shocked to see the Pats decide NOT to pound their head against a defense (likely some kind of 8 man front that will look like a 4-4) and air it out.

Look maybe they might try and run the ball (our strength against your strength kind of thing), but they WILL have some kind of offense that will say "hey, I'm not crazy OR stubborn" And the only way we are going to win this game is by having the Offense score over 25 points, and they will have to do a LOT of that through the air. BTW, my impression was that the Rams were predominately a zone team in their coverage. Can anyone confirm or deny this impression?

The defense will likely keep them in the game early on, of course, but it too will falter if the offense doesn't pull its share of the road.

What do you think?

Wait what? That’s tomorrow?

Seriously I was supposed to go to LA for these games. I hate that I’m not there. I blame (looks in bag of posters) SB1

Yeah, you missed the thread that was already started by a few days...

I think the relatively minimal talk about the Rams game is due to a focus on figuring out playoff possibilities, plus the combination of three NFL games Monday and Tuesday with the Pats playing just four days after their last game.

As was mentioned, there was already a thread, but a pre-game "Idle Thoughts" is fine with me

This is the game where our defense can shine, and I think, like STs was the story against the Chargers, that the defense will be the story if we can win this one. I expect one of those ugly wins, but I do really think we can win this one. The Pats have showed up against winning teams.

I have no idea which team will show up and am excited to watch the game. I hate Thursday night football.

Me too. It's actually Friday early morning football where I am, so I will be watching the replay hours later.

Win the turnover game and give Cam & Co. short fields.
Tall order

Strongly doubt we can go no huddle, 5 wide. We'll definitely try to run it. I think there is a good chance our defense will be up to the task. Our best bet is to have a great defensive game, get 2-3 turnovers and give our offense a short field to put up the points needed. Would be a hell of a win if we pull it off.

This is why cumulative stats don’t tell the story and why you can’t look at stats draw a conclusion and win money gambling on the NFL

The Rams are in fact #3 vs the run. They allow 93 rush yards per game. However they have faced one offense all year in the top 10 in run offense and 5 in the bottom 10. Their average opponent ranking in rushing offense is 18.5.
Those bottom 10 running teams averaged 57 yards per game and the other 7 teams ranked 4,11,11,13,14,17,18 averaged 119 per game with only Az under 100 and they were 21-92 with Murray choosing to barely run.
The 5 teams ranked 17 or better averaged 24-120 and 5 years a carry against them.
So we really aren’t facing a dominant run d we are facing a run d that hasn’t been challenged much and did very well against teams that struggle to run the ball and not so well against average running games.

Why does my cable guide have the game at 8 tonight? Does this effed season eff up the cable people?

Yeah, you missed the thread that was already started by a few days...

Thanks, I feel better now. My faith in the board has been restored. ;). I can't imagine how I missed it.

While it does seem far fetched that we would align in a 5 wide set, but the fact is that any team can scheme to stop another team's run game. Even bad run defense teams. This team isn't bad. So how long can you run into brick walls before you HAVE to spread them out.

BTW- for this game I'd rather use the RPO look to run my play action passing game, rather than a standard fake to a RB which has the QB with his back turned to the defense. Let Can ride the RB into the LOS, and THEN pull back an throw. This way he will have a good look at the rush and pattern options from the snap of the ball.

Well even if JC Jackson doesn't play the Pats have enough good secondary people to play man against the pass. And they have enough secondary support to play a man under, 2 deep look that could really confuse Goff. Hey just writing this stuff has me a bit more optimistic

Cam Newtown questionable for today's game. He is also questionable for being a QB. Probable he's a glorified RB.
