I could be wrong, but I think the Colts started doing that. First time I saw it was 2018 game against the Pats which @PATSYLICIOUS just mentioned.

When they changed the rules a couple years ago to allow for end zone celebrations a couple years ago, it was only a matter of time before the defense wanted in on the fun.

I remember back in 2007 in the regular season finale that after a Patriot scored a TD and danced, another Patriot vaguely pumped his arms and nodded his head in the general vicinity and they got flagged for a 15 yard excessive celebration penalty for a coordinated celebration. They showed a ref demonstrating to Belichick how the second Patriot danced.

They changed rules a few years ago and that started this thing.

I think the TVs they've put in the end zones for them pose at has made it worse. Not sure but I think those were added to give players a way to interact with fans during covid times.

I grew up with the picture of Ameche scoring the TD to win the 58 championship. Just about everyone in my neighborhood in Baltimore had the scene framed in their living room or rec room. But this picture from a different angle is what was embedded in my mind, Unitas just turning and walking off the field. No on field celebrating, just act like it’s the job you have done 100s of times before. I guess I resemble the old coot shaking his fist at the kids on his lawn....
