September 27 Weekend TV Coverage

Looking ahead to next week's games, a fair amount of out of town fans will be able to enjoy watching the Pats play the Raiders - even though it is one of several early games.

The game will definitely be televised in all of New England (including Hartford), in Nevada (current Raider territory), northern California, Oregon and Washington (Raider territory when they were in Oakland).

It will also probably be shown in the following areas:
Florida (except Jacksonville, which would air division rival Houston)
Gulf Coast (Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana)
Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska
Everything west of Texas, with the exception of southern California (LA and San Diego will get the Chargers game instead)

The other early games on CBS are Houston at Pittsburgh, Tennessee at Minnesota and Bengals at Eagles, so there there is a good possibility of the Patriots being broadcast in many neutral markets. CBS gets only one game in week three and their late games are Jets at Colts and Panthers at Chargers.


For the late game on Fox most of the country will get Dallas at Seattle. Fox loves to showcase Dallas and I think they will go with the Cowboys over the Brady-Gronk show in neutral markets. I will be curious to see if the Bucs are broadcast in all of Florida (Fox and CBS both have a tendency to think all of the state is interested in all other state teams for some reason - for example Miami games airing whenever possible in Tampa, or Bucs games broadcast in Dolphin territory).

Tampa Bay at Denver will air in those two teams normal markets, plus New England (Brady factor > "America's Team").

I'm also curious to see if Fox - who loves the NFC East - will still make 49ers-Giants their big game early, or instead broadcast Rams-Bills in neutral markets. Garoppolo is out and SF has several other key injuries, and the Giants are going nowhere now that Saquon Barkley is out. LA-Buffalo is a much better game, but Fox has a history of not only jamming the NFC East down our collective throats, but of also not promoting an AFC (CBS) team with just a few rare exceptions.

NFC East is such garbage football. Not only are the teams terrible but they lack excitement. Giants, Washington, Eagles, Cowboys. As you pointed out, Fox seems to think that the average fan shares their NFC East viagra erection.

I don't know if it's just enormous representation by the fans of those teams, but . . . they get ratings.

To wit: the 2007 Patriots–Ravens game gave ESPN the largest audience in cable history. That record was broken the next season by the first Eagles-Cowboys game.

It's a business decision, so I get it. But as a football fan I also reserve the right to be disappointed and angry that the games broadcast to me are based on television market size rather than quality of the two opponents.

New York: #1 television market in US.
Philadelphia: #4
Dallas-Fort Worth: #5

Here's the part I don't understand though: People in New York are going to get all 16 NYG games, people in Philly get all 16 Eagle games, etc. Does Fox think that because of their large market size they will also have the most people that grew up there, but now live elsewhere?

It seems to me a better business decision would be to simply broadcast the best teams/best games. Higher quality football games are going to attract more viewers. Go with the hot hand - whoever is playing well right now, this season. That will create higher ratings in neutral markets than Eagles-Giants followed by Washington-Dallas. Drop Wash, Phil and NYG from the rotation and fill them with the Packers, Saints, Bucs and Rams.

CBS only has one game on Sunday. Fox has the doubleheader. It means there won't be any CBS game at the 1 PM timeslot in those yellow areas.

I can’t afford another couple of hours of pregame drinking! Plus they’re in DC so about an hour drive before and after the games.

Yep. Driving home after getting there early for the season opener had the self monitoring on high alert. I could tell I’d had the extra time drinking. Not enough to be really concerned, but made the justification an easy sell. Being single I only had to sell myself.

I am psyched that Fox is giving us Tampa this year and not the Cowboys or Giants. I hate those games. Much rather watch the Bucs.

The New England area will be receiving Tampa Bay games about 14 times this year. Unprecedented for a team that is 1,000 miles away, and not a primary or secondary market for that club.

You would think they'd show more Giants games up in NE because a lot of the older folks there follow them...
