Why the Colts run up the score

Why do the Colts run up the score on the "sisters of the poor"? I have a theory. I believe there is an organizational belief that they lack the "killer instinct". I believe they feel they have to nurture this "killer instinct" throughout the season, to develop a merciless streak in their players in preparation for the Big Game at the end of the year, likely against you know who you know where. So, this merciless streak is really the product of fear born of failure. They KNOW it's unsportsmanlike, and wrong, but they flaunt it, hoping to develop this single trait, thinking it the missing link to Super Bowl glory. So this desire to run up the score, this merciless destruction of a helpless foe, is really a window into a frightened mind, and possibly a deranged one in Polian. An example of this bizarre trait was going for 2 against the Pats last year up 40-21, while Polian loudly exhorted his team from the press box to "break Flutie's legs". What is ironic is that the "killer instinct" is not what they lack at all, they misjudge themselves. What they lack is grace under fire, also known as courage. And courage isn't fashioned by obliterating the helpless.

Add to this that Archie getting behind men thing and I agree 100%

ok...first of all, AV was out of the game

secondly, peyton threw 4 times in the 4th quarter...the colts ran it 12 times.

how is this "stat padding" OR trying to "run up the score?"

obviously i need a remedial english lesson

I'll try again.

When your team is already up by 20 with 2:30 to play, you kick the field goal...unless:

A: you're worried about the TEXANS scoring THREE TDs and THREE 2-pt conversions in the final two minutes...or,

B: the inmates are running the asylum.

Either way, it's the DEFINITION of running up the score.

let me know if you're still confused.

Ok. I'm not in the MENSA organization. But that is the truest DEFINITION of running up the score or padding the stats that I can think of.

Thank you Taildragger.

I like that Peyton commercial for some football service where he's in the shotgun against the Titans, talks to the camera in the middle of the play, and then throws the TD pass over the middle.

Before the pass, the score is 28-3.

Manning had to have approved of that commercial to be in it. Even in his fantasies, he's padding his stats.

ok,

colts get possession with 5:06 to go in the game. they run the ball 4 times...houston calls a time out at 3:35.

colts run the ball 3 more time...houston calla time out with 2:42 to go in the game.

houston then changes their defensive package to load up on the run, so the colts offense does what it is designed to do...they attack the weakness.

not to mention that houston was calling timeouts, so they obviously thought they could stay in the game. the colts showed them that they couldn't by running for another td.

so...the opposition thinks they can still win (and is trying to), they're calling time outs to stop the clock, and they're changing their package to stop the run...sounds like the colts play smart football to me.

8 runs, 1 pass in the possession. sure sounds like "running it up."

Two things. First, kicking field goals at that point is running up the score and is seen by some as worse than moving the ball and forcing the defense to stop you. Second, I think that the Colts got PO'ed that the Texans were burning all their time outs when the game was basically over and the Colts were just running out the clock. So I think that they thought if that's the way they want to play it, so will we. I've seen this happen before other teams and also with the Colts. They were perfectly happy running the ball and running out the clock until Houston started calling time outs.

It's a commercial, get over it. BTW, the score was kind of the point of the commercial. They were advertising the fact that you could watch any game you wanted and weren't forced to watch a blow out like you would be with a network game.
