Anyone remember if the Pats have ever had 5 QBs going into training camp under Belichick?

I remember there were a few years they had 4, but I can't remember if they had 5 in 2000 or not..

Well, Belichick hasn't had any resemblance of a competition at the position ever as a NE head coach, arguably even with Bledsoe despite having four in 2000.

The two UFDAs on the practice squad (signed long before Cam) will probably have to demonstrate magic to even last a couple of weeks if I were to guess. Maybe even in another position.

I am interested in J'Mar Smith and think he would be a great scout team/PS QB for us....

I say they keep two.

Newton wins the job and Stidum is the backup. Hoyer gets released and will return if there's an injury.

Keep 3 during the COVID shrouded season. If anyone tests positive or even is around someone who tests positive, that's 14 days in quarantine and likely 3 games and all practices missed. Its going to happen to some teams and effect their season.

It'll be interesting to see if players decide to not show up due to health concerns. Especially since the NFL seems to be the worst of all major sports as far as their health plans to bring back football. Our rookies are supposed to show up Tuesday 7/21, and QBs on Friday 7/24.

I presume that you just make this up as you go. Please state the new NFL/CBA rule where there is a 14 day quarantine and a loss of three games. Don't bother. There is no such rule.

If you test positive and it is not a false positive you will be out for about those 14 days because you won't be able to provide two negative tests 72h apart in approximately that amount of time.

And in those 10-14 days you will most probably miss 3 games.

What exactly does this have to do with the NFL/CBA ? You think they will let positive players just play ?

I think unless the owners take back the COVID -> NFI provision there will be too much tension to have properly executed training camps.

The league's reaction has already been the worst cluster**** out of most major sport leagues. Nobody else had the luxury of months to prepare and plan. And yet those clowns in the league office ****ed it up.

I am usually a fan of "2 QB" but as there's an enhanced chance of losing any player at any moment this year, having 3 QB who can legitimately start if needed would be a huge advantage.

That said, I'd love one of the UDFA to make the PS and Newton and Hoyer probably aren't going to be on the roster many more years, if any, after this one.

We can still have only 2 QB's with Hoyer sitting by the phone.

Losing 1 to COVID-19 means next man up...with the back up having 7 days to prepare to back up...and at most 14 days to prepare to start....

No difference between having 2 or 3, IMO.

The NFL was also considering putting a small group of practice squad players on with no veteran accrued seasons counted, in other words they could put Brian Hoyer on the practice squad.

If this doesn't pass they should consider J'Mar Smith as a practice squad eligible candidate assuming he shows well.

He wouldn't be sitting by the phone. He'd be on another team. He's a lousy starter but he's a really good backup.

Bumping PS up to 16 would be great for the UDFAs from every position group since they now may not have any chance to prove their mettle in the preseason games. At least with a big PS teams could theoretically keep many of the UDFAs that look good in practice.

Agreed, it would provide more jobs and give UDFA's a fighting chance.

They almost have to increase the PS further because otherwise a lot of UDFAs (and some bubble guys) will just opt out of the season to have their contract toll. Especially if there is truth to some of the tweets that indicate that opting-out might come with a partial payout.

Make it up??? lol, do you live under a rock?
"CDC recommends 14 days of quarantine after exposure based on the time it takes to develop illness if infected. This recommendation will prevent most, but cannot prevent all, instances of secondary spread. The risk of transmission after recovery is likely substantially less than that during illness; recovered persons will not be shedding large amounts of virus by this point, if they are shedding at all".
AS IF the NFL won't comply or the players will ignore positive tests or known exposure. lol, ya ok....

Either way...I'd prefer to roll with 2 guys and use J'Marr Smith in an emergency Jacoby Brissett style.

It is a weird year...we won't be relying on rookies much, but we will have expanded practice squads. Let Hoyer play elsewhere....or sit by the phone, IMO.
