Why would there be desperation ? They could have waited another 2 months before signing Dugger if they wanted. There is no pressure at all to have cap space right now just to sign the draft picks.

To me this implies that the team is aware that this will be a very challenging season for all rookies given the extraordinary COVID affected preseason. Also they projected that Chung has still something left in his tank.

Something that may be overlooked here is the signing bonus for Dugger. These are tough times with many Americans unemployed. Maybe Dugger needed some money now to support his family and himself. Jobs aren't aplenty out there so maybe BB had to make space so the Pats could throw some money to KD sooner than later.

Harris was behind Michel, Burkhead, and White. You seem to forget that WHITE went through the same thing as a rookie despite the numerous injuries ahead of him.

The only struggles that Michel had was a crappy run-blocking O-line because they didn't have Andrews all season, Wynn for 8 games, a true blocking FB after Develin and Johnson went down or a half-decent blocking TE.. The return of Wynn made the running game significantly better for everyone as did Roberts showing he could block as a FB..

All three position groups in your post are strengths of the 2020 Patriots with excellent depth and a combination of youth and experience. Danny Vitale's signing to replace Develin in the RB group and Chung's signing for the secondary are low-cost moves while other position groups (QB and LB respectively) adapt to new starters.

The thing about this backfield is that they will know where to line up and what their assignments are on every play. Stidham can focus on his job and not be concerned about anyone being out of position. If the OL is intact when the season gets underway (Wynn, Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Cannon), the only other rookie on the field will be a tight end. That makes Stidham's transition to starter a lot easier.

If Damien Harris and Yodny Cajuste can step up as depth players, the offense should be solid, not great, but solid.

As I've posted elsewhere, I fully expect BB to trade for or sign a good veteran wideout to add to the current group. It made perfect sense to stay out of the rookie WR draft sweepstakes given that he has two 2nd year contributors on the roster already.

Chung's 2021 dead money pales in comparison to the load of dead money left behind by Tom Brady, Antonio Brown, Michael Bennett and Stephen Gostkowski - $21.4 million of the Pats league leading $23 million.

I get your point but getting the money is usually not a problem especially if you have been drafted very early and have a reputable agent (and not your cousin ect.). In fact providing cash flow for situations like that is actually often part of the contract with the agent.

Similarly most NFL contracts have automatic restructuring provisions included to convert salary into a signing bonus. Getting about 900k in relief is chump change that they could have gotten in many other ways as well if time was really of the essence.

I agree. I also believe that there was no harm in extending Ching now and signing Dugger. BTW, is there any consequences of being a non-signed player with regard to contacts with team and other such items?

As it is very common to have draft picks unsigned until shortly before camp I don't think there is anything really problematic there.

Patrick Chung is a 3 time Superbowl Champion and one of its elite foundational players on defense.

Phillips was always more a special teams guy than a good SS. And Dugger is super raw. JoeJuan seems to be another bust pick in the making.

I spaced out on the Develin retirement and the corresponding signing of Danny Vitale who is an ideal replacement in Belichick's and McDaniel's FB-reliant rushing and passer protection offense. The other guy who showed signs of being a good depth player was German Jakob Johnson out of the international league and UT-Knoxville.

The more I look at the roster, the more I like it.

The weakest links in the roster, due primarily inexperience, are QB, TE and maybe LB. I wish Van Noye could have been re-signed.

That $23 million in dead money was a real anchor during this off-season. In spite of that, the Patriots appear to have assembled a good team with quality depth.

There will be several more moves as the off-season proceeds. I hope they don't repeat the circus of the Antonio Brown experiment. This is a young team in a leadership transition that needs to focus on what it can do best in the post-Brady era. Distractions are not needed this year.
