If you go to pro football reference, every player drafted gets assigned a seasonal and career value score called AV.

if we just look at the career AV totals of players drafted by NE vs Balt vs Seat over the last 20, 10 and 5 year increments we see:

Pats
20 yr AV total: 2691
Last 10 years: 1245
Last 5 years: 299

Balt
20 yr AV total: 2669
Last 10 years: 965
Last 5 years: 358

Seattle
20 yr AV total: 2611
10 yr AV total: 1295
5 yr AV total: 315

Seattle is generally thought to have killed the draft the past decade but pats are right behind, and some of these careers have more legs.

the past 5 years are still a work in progress, and more time is needed to make any judgements, although the Pats 2017 draft was abysmal.

a lot depends on development of Isaiah Wynn, Stidham, Harry etc.

One thing to take into account was the year we lost a first rounder for nothing...

Sounds about right

The direction of the team has a lot riding on the '18, '19, and '20 classes

Tons and tons of potential, have to develop everyone

'17 was miserable

If '18 gives us a long-term LT, starting RB and starting LB it'll be a solid class (Sucks on Dawson)

If '19 pans out with Harry being a WR1, Wino being a starting edge, Stidham a competent starting QB, Williams panning out, along with Cajuste, Froholft, Cowart producing...that would be MAJOR, although very optimistic, that's still on the table

Now '20 offers us Dugger, Uche, Jennings, Asiasi, Keene, Rohrwasser, and Omenwu

Lots of youth to like

Not to mention the handul of legitimate UDFAs NE brought in last week along with JC Jackson and Jakobi Meyers

I'd be interested to see these numbers updated to include UDFAs.

Really interesting. Curious. What is the specific draft performance during the following periods:
2001-2004 Weiss, Pioli
2005-2008 McDaniels is here
2009-2012 Reese, O'Brien
2013-2020 McDaniels is here

The results may surprise some people but be clear as day. Just to cut to the chase, the worst draft periods by far have been 2013-2020 and 2005-2008, when the guy who drafted Tim Tebow in the first round was telling Belichick bad opinions in Foxboro.

In my mind, we had opportunities galore to continue our success by drafting wisely,

But for some unknown reason, bb went off script and started reaching on draft

at first we shrugged it off and said things like “in bill we trust”.

But then bb appeared to be trying to outsmart the rest of the nfl by taking a lot of boom or bust players, or worse yet, guys with medical problems in the hopes they could recover. With cannon, it made sense because it was the 5th round. With Easley, it was a disaster because it was the first round.

bottom line: bb needs to get back to drafting like he did from 2000 to 2012.

Specifically drafting from 2009 to 2012 and 2001 to 2004, which is when Josh McDaniels wasn't here? When we got Gronk, Edelman, Hernandez, Chandler Jones, Hightower, Deion Branch, David Givens, Daniel Graham, etc.

excellent point.

If you look at the last five or so years, the Pats shifted from coveting draft capital to trading many draft picks on veterans that might help win another championship.

Granted most (other than Sanu) were low risk moves, but the Patriots added Josh Gordon, Michael Bennett, Jonathan Bostic, Eric Rowe, Kyle Van Noy, Chris Hogan and others via trading away draft picks. I don't see the problem with that at all. But if you are going to grade drafts then you also need to factor those pick ups into the equation.
