Try to keep the d together. Keep dmc and shelton in the 6-8 m range. Keep one of van noy or collins whichever makes more sense financially, hopefully also 6-8 m. butler is restricted so should not cost a ton to retain. I can honestly see the same d back except for van noy.

thuney i don’t think we can afford unfortunately, get the comp pick and hope one of the drafted ol from this year can step in reasonably.

keep brady, try to get aj green on the cheap and double dip on te in the draft. Maybe try another wr, safety, and depth for ol/dl. Id bring sanu back with a half season and tc, if bb follows the typical trend with 2nd rounder, he should get at least 1 more year to work out.

Half of that (or more) will be for the QB, unless they take a JAG QB or Stidham, and use the other $$ to rebuild a younger group of WRs, OL, DL....
They could make Brady’s next contract like this recent one. Minimum salary in 2020 and two fake years in 2021 and 2022 with a $24 million signing bonus would be just over a $9 million cap hit despite him getting paid $25 million, for example. Just depends how much they’re willing to move to the future.

IMO they will spend the money to sign Thuney and will also keep Butler, Roberts, Newhouse, Karras, Slater, Ebner and Bethel on modest deals. I could see Folk being kept over Gost or at least used as leverage to get Gost to take a pay cut, though Gost could probably get paid elsewhere with the kicker woes in the NFL lately.

Dorsett could be back because I don’t think he will have much of a market. Depends on how things go. IMO they could cut Jason McCourty to save $4m on the cap, he’s just not that needed now I think, but where does that leave Devin? The safety market has been a little depressed lately, and he’s older. Maybe they can get him back on low money and restructure Jason to a lower depth player salary.

Don’t think KVN will return. Collins is probably a no but he also kind of disappeared to an extent late in the season and I’m unsure teams are necessarily high on now after one season of being good then meh. If he’s affordable he could be back to help cover KVN’s departure.

Don’t see any reason to dump Sanu at his cap #. An off-season with the team will help him. Amendola is a FA again who could be affordable but he’s not the type of player they really need right now - would rather develop Meyers than pay Danny (as much as I love Danny.)

Glazer is reporting that Brady will not take a team friendly deal so he's gone.
Sign a vet back up and roll with Stidham next year

Tommy,

Talent being equal, what position would you focus on first in either the draft or fa? TE, OL, WR, DL, Safety? Those I think would be our biggest needs.

Ashley, so many needs. First, I would pick a QB if someone good is available like Jake Fromm or Jordan Love. If a decent QB prospect is not available when we select, I would probably go DT. They couldn't stop the run ever since the Ravens game. WR and TE can hopefully be addressed through trade and/or free agency

Interesting take on the QB. I would think Stidham would be the heir apparent to Tom, but who knows at this point.

If they did it that way the extension would create dead money hits of $8mil in 2020, 2021, and 2022 on top of the dead money hits of $6.75mil in 2020 and 2021 from the current contract, for total dead money hits of $14.75 mil in 2020 and 2021 and $8mil in 2022.

If Brady retired or was cut after 2020 then the dead money in 2021 would be the $6.75mil from the current contract, the $8mil from the 2021 bonus amortization and the accelerated $8mil from the 2022 bonus amortization for a total of a $22.75mil 2021 dead money cap hit. Ouch!

I think if McDaniels leaves, TB not coming back, Patriots really need a QB whisperer to help Stidham learn and evolve.

Look what QB coach, Urban did for Lamar Jackson.

Who will be Stidham's QB Whisperer??

Glazer is reporting that Brady will not take a team friendly deal ...
I’ve heard this a few times and I can’t say it makes a lot of sense to me. After 20 years of (mostly) not aiming for top paydays, being a team guy but still well paid, he’s going to be a hard liner — willing to change teams, systems, coaches and owner over money that frankly won’t affect his family’s well being for generations to come? Hmmm.

- Brady should be resigned

- Thuney should be resigned if they can get him for $12m or under. If not sadly we should let him walk but spending close to $25m on guards isn’t the best use of cap space when we have lots of other needs.

- KVN likely gone. Would love to resign him but he wants top $

- McCourty resign 1 year $7m.

- Collins try to resign for 2 years $5m per.

- Shelton or Butler, not both, but Shelton could get costly

- Slater 2 years $3m per

- sign Nick Folk 2 years $1m per

Cuts- Gostkowski and Sanu unless he takes a big cut

Restructures - Cannon and Hightower. Possibly Gilmore

- Sorry, but you don't cut Gostkowski for Folk.. That's just silliness.
- And I don't think they bring back Collins.. He played great initially, then started doing the same old same old that got him shipped to Cleveland.

- Butler is an RFA. He'll be back.
- Definitely want Slater back.
- Elandon Roberts is likely to be back as well.

- I personally wasn't all that impressed by Brooks either on defense or Special teams. I'd rather have Brandon King out there.

- I see Chung as being cut or possibly retiring since he got injured again. His play really went downhill this year. I think that JoeJuan Williams would be a perfect guy to take Chung's place in that role of covering TEs/Tall WRs out of the slot. He did well in the limited snaps he got with JMac out.

- I think that Thuney will be a priority. I could see the Pats going for the lower end of the top 5 salaries ($9M/year) . I think a 4 year deal between 36-44M (9-11M APY) gets it done.

- I'd like to see DMac back. I don't feel we have anyone behind him who can be that FS who controls the secondary right now.

I think we're going to see a big turnover at LB. I think that the Patriots might try to bring back Kamu Grugier-Hill. I'd like to see them go after Markus Golden from the Giants and Matt Judon from the Ravens.

I wouldn't mind seeing Christian Covington in the replace Shelton.

I hope the Patriots don't try and bring Ferentz or Newhouse back. I'd like to see Karras back, but I have a feeling that a team need with needs at C/G will over-pay for him like teams did for Fleming and Waddle.

What will be interesting is how the Pats go for QB, O-Line, WR, and TE.
O-line - Swing Tackle, Back-up OC/OG, Starting LG
WR - While they have Edelman, Sanu, Henry, Meyers, and Oszlewski under contract, there was an overall lack of execution there all year. Too many dropped passed in key situations.
TE - They definitely missed Gronk. LaCosse was a failure overall. Watson showed glimpses, but he wasn't even 5% of Gronk. The Pats definitely need someone here. Probably 2 someones.

Personally, I'd cut LaCosse, focus on Henry and adding someone to develop early in the draft while letting Develin/Jacobson/Roberts take TE snaps.

Watson is gone you could tell from the press conference. On a side note it would be nice to keep Justin Bethel.
Bethel is under contract already

I just don't ever want to see Sanu in a Patriots uniform again. Please make him go away. To me he is worse than Reche Caldwell, who at least tried.

I think Edelman should retire and wonder if the Pats really want him back. His body is destroyed and he's past the WR age cliff. I know he had big numbers this year, but that looked painful. You could tell that the 2018 postseason was his last full-on warrior run. They cannot expect to build an offense around him.

Collins for $5m for two years is nit gonna happen - he has established his position and he would find some $ elsewhere.
Thuney for $12m per year or less it would be awesome but I think he will be offered much more.

The 5 top Left Guards are getting between 7 and 11M in salary with SB money bringing them to 7.6-14.3M The Average is like 10.825M or something. I could see Thuney signing for that.

I hope so :)

They won’t cut Cannon, close to a $4m cap hit if they do.

For Gilmore it’s not about less money but moving $ to free up cap space.

Sanu made about $2.5m more then Amendola this year. Amendola can probably be had for about $3m next year. Sanu isn’t worth close to $6.5, especially when we need that $ for players who can contribute.

While Shelton and Butler won’t get huge contracts, Shelton is likely at least $6m per year and Butler was on a minimum contract for $600,000 this year. He’s getting a big raise somewhere.

I take Folk in the $1m range over Gostkowski at close to $5m. Gostkowski is a great Patriot, but he’s to expensive and Folk played well. We need savings somewhere.

KVN made $6m and wants a nice raise. I can’t see the team being able to afford him if they want to upgrade at TE and outside WR.

You are seriously all over the place with your numbers, confusing salary with salary cap. Also, the Pats currently have 49M in cap space. That includes the $6.375M for Brady's contract void.

Butler is a RFA. He's not getting a "big raise" unless someone forks over a draft pick.

KVN's salary was 4.75M with the game roster bonuses he earned. I don't see anyone paying KVN top dollar. If he doubles that, I'd be surprised.

Sadly, some "famous named WRs" just cannot learn the Patriots WR complex playbook and techniques.

Likely Sanu is one of these as well. Antonio Brown with all of his issues, quickly adapted to the playbook.

We need a #1 WR (outside of Edelman) with the talent and the know-how.

I would try to sign Amari Cooper ($10m-$14m/yr). He is young, talented and pretty smart.

Sign Henry, TE and get another decent TE. Our current TE players should all be released.

We also need a THUMPER RB, ala, Blount-like. use for short yardage.

Try to keep the d together. Keep dmc and shelton in the 6-8 m range. Keep one of van noy or collins whichever makes more sense financially, hopefully also 6-8 m. Roberts and butler are restricted so they should not cost a ton to retain. I can honestly see the same d back except for van noy.

Roberts is a UFA.. The Pats have 2 RFA. Butler and Eluemunor.

What proof do you have that AB quickly adapted to the playbook? The whopping 24 snaps that he took for the Patriots? If you're going by number of snaps, then you have to go with Sanu who had 37 during his first game with the Pats.

What makes you think that Dallas is going to let Cooper walk? Especially after they traded a #1 pick for him? The Cowboys are going to slap the franchise tag on Cooper.
