Since the kickoff moved up, I'm pretty sure there's a default assumption on the part of officials that, unless they very clearly intend to return the ball, a player fielding the ball in the end zone on a kickoff is giving themselves up, and that assumption is made both because returning the ball from the end zone is generally extremely stupid nowadays and for player safety reasons. You don't really see guys kneel at all anymore, the official was trying too hard there.
