Bill Simmons: Patriots saying Eff-You to the League

"Eff You" has a nice ring to it but honestly, it is what it is: playing sixty minutes of football. You keep going until the game is over. Like Disco pointed out, what the hell else were they going to do in those situations? Kneel down until the two minute warning, kick a field goal, and then get somebody hurt in a meaningless garbage time defensive stand?

The complaints about sunday are the funniest. Philips kept calling time outs. If you want the game to end, don't stop the clock.

This will be the new rallying cry of Pats detractors - "You're beating us by too many points!"

Hey if one of the best teams in football can't stop our 5th RB how is that our fault?

" 'Maybe the 2007 Patriots don't have anything as magical as McHale's pits, but they do have the "Eff You TD."' "

Perhaps these t-shirts could include printed McHale-style arm pit hair, just for good measure.

Those things left an indelible mark on my young brain at the time.

Ya know,

Dallas has no one to blame but themselves for that last score. Phillips called a time out there at the end. He was telling the Patriots that they were still playing till the clock went to zeroes. Bellichick said fine. Had Dallas NOT called that time out, New England might well have been able to run all the time off.

In the end though, going for the last score was the only honorable thing to do. they said they wanted to play. we kept running it right at them and telling them to stop us if they could. That's not running up the score. That's playing to the end of the game, a full 60 minutes, exactly as Dallas indicated they wanted to do with that last time out.

exactly.....

I know it's not classy or "PC" but I would love to hear the "F YOU" chant roaring from the stands at the Razor at the end of the 4th quarter of the Jets game in December. It probably wouldn't rattle Mangini or the Jets, but it sure would feel good.

I'd prefer the modified Jets chant...
R! A! T! S!
Rats! Rats! RATS!

How about distributing fake video cameras or simple models made out of cardboard that look like video cameras to ALL the fans on the side that faces the Jets??

Imagine Mangini looking at the fans on seeing 100s of such 'cameras' aimed against him and his team.

I love Bill Simmons but I don't see how ANY of those examples show us saying "Eff you"

Week 3 vs. Buffalo (38-7): 45-yard TD catch by Randy Moss, 10:22 left.
There's TEN GOD DAMN MINUTES LEFT still!

Yes, true, but was it really necessary to throw the deep bomb to Moss at that point? From a practical standpoint, wouldn't it have made more sense to just chew up some more clock, and then score the icing TD?

Better yet, every ticket holder ought to bring his own camera, videotape the signals all game long, and then mail them to Mangini, Belichick, Goodell, and the media at the end of the game. 50,000 videocassettes stacked outside of the Jets office would be classic.

There were still over three minutes left at the time of the TD. That's a little early to take a knee and turn the ball over on downs, don't you think?

Though personally I would have loved it. It would be a total sign of disrespect for a bunch of Charger crybabies who deserve no respect.

Precisely my point. I don't think that was an eff you TD, thus I disagree with Simmons.

I agree 1000% with Simmons, and I've thought about another side of this whole thing. Brady looks like he's ready to eat nails every time the cameras on him, except for the pregame stuff. Once the game is on, he looks like he wants to get a score as soon as possible, and get of the field and start thinking of the next one. I think he feels the same way that BB does, when the talk of tainted rings comes out in the media. Eff'm all galdang' it Eff'm all!

I agree. Simmons has it wrong - but it's still kind of a fun idea to ponder.

I don't get the idea of an unnecessary score/TD. Are we supposed to just give the ball to our oppenents if we have a big lead? I mean, come on. If our offense is easily marching down the field late in the game, we're just supposed to take it as far as possible, but not score, just hand it back over to the other team? WTF kind of logic is that? The point of football is to win. You win by scoring more points than the other team. A good way to ensure a victory is to score when ever possible. There is no such thing as a "eff you" TD. A TD is a TD, the score doesn't matter.

Its competetive sports. If you don't wany the opposing team stacking points on you late in the game, stop them. If your defense sucks and you can't, well, deal with it. It's your fault your getting destroyed, not the other team "rubbing it in".

Eff You has become the slogan for the 1989-49er-like Patriots. And it's great.

Anyone care to venture a guess for the Jets score week 15? 65-0?

In my best Head Ref's voice:

"Game ended due to unethical slaughtering of the opponent. This rule was put in place during the first two minutes of the game after the score was 0- the scoreboard doesn't register. Game ends at 2:05, first quarter."

Dear NFL:

EFF YOU!

Signed,

NE Patriots

What a great rally cry.

Start printing the t-shirts.

Anyone remember "Don't talk to me"? I have a t-shirt from 2001 that said that but I think this one could be a better seller.

sign me up for one.

Lets get them shirts made and raise 5,000 dollars and send a check to brady to cover his fine....

then maybe raise 500,000 for BB? ok that one would be a little tough.

but really, it would be a good EFF you to the ol commish to send a millionare 5,000 dollars to pay for his retarted fine.

You know, if every Pats fan sent in a few bucks, that actually would raise $500k, not that BB needs it obviously, but that would be truly great "Eff You" to the entire league.

at 25 dollars a shirt, we need 200 shirts to pay brady's fine.

at 25 dollars a shirt, we need 20,000 shirts to pay bb'f fine.

That would be the greatest thing to ever happen. How many memebers are on this board?

8,000 so if we got everyone on this board to buy a shirt, and then went to a game at Gillette and sold like 15,000 we'd be all set, plus I think the novelty of it and publicity could make them sell. But getting 20K+ t-shirts might be tough, maybe posters would be easier. If it happened, it would be awesome.
