Ha ha we're still here?

Izzo will be a solid backup TE somewhere.

If you cut him, he's gone.

Personally I think that we are all overestimating how desirable our fringe roster guys are among other teams. Relative to Munson or most certainly Meyers I don't think Izzo has really shown a lot to be a coveted player. Is it possible someone picks him up ? Sure. Has he popped for it to be a foregone conclusion ? eh no.

We can disagree.

But who are these "additional lineman" because other than Ted K I don't see anyone who is ready to play or an NFL player?

We are talking about blocking and not intricate defensive schemes here. If Cameron Fleming in his rookie season was a passable jumbo TE then I am sure Scar can coach most of the lineman like Skipper up to do that a few times a game.

Not saying it is ideal but with the constraints of a 53 roster and Kendricks/Watson being available within the first four weeks I think the TE position might look a bit funky until it settles after the suspensions are done with.

Cameron has been a solid swing tackle for a number of years. Dallas just signed him again. And I believe he was used in 3 TE sets, not as the backup.

I see no Cam Flemings here.

I don't think Skipper would be a big downgrade on the rookie version of Fleming.

Other teams over the years have taken a flier on a player released. Most of the time it winds up being nothing or the guy floats around on other teams. Not inflating view of Izzo but teams may be so-so on their own fringe players and see enough to check him out. See former draft pick Lee Smith as an example.

I agree on it being "easy" to find an OL to be the jumbo TE, but I think that should be done in place of a TE3, not a TE2. I don't like the idea of having any position that is one injury away from being completely vacated. I think regardless of talent, they're keeping 2 TEs, and if it's SO bad that they can't pick two, they'll sign someone after cut downs. But I'd be very surprised if there aren't at least 2 TE's on the roster come week 1.

Now, when Watson comes back, there's definitely a case to be made that they remain at 2, and cut one of them, rather than suddenly start carrying 3. But a lot can happen in the next five weeks.

I generally agree. The only thing that makes me consider this is that Kendricks will be back for W2. It is essentially a question of getting through one week in exchange for an additional roster spot for two weeks (Kendricks will have an exemption in his first week back).

As I said before I don't think it is likely but it would only be for a single game.

During Cam's rookie season you had Gronk.

So Skipper, who isn't even an NFL player IMO, would be your best blocking TE on a team built to run???

For one game.

Maybe. Kendricks has shown you something that he can do something?

Me ? No. I am also not advocating to do this as I prefaced my entire post with "I don't think it is likely".

Am just pointing out with the staggered suspensions of two TEs there is a way to play around with roster construction a bit.

For one game.

Last question and then I'll drop it.

Why not cut Skipper for one game and use Thuney as your backup tackle?

Do you think Skipper would be picked up before Izzo?

No reason at all. I went to the TE position because two players are coming back from suspension which creates leeway to play around with roster spots. This is not an anti Izzo post. I just thought it is more likely he stays available and makes it to the PS than LaCosse if we cut him. But obviously you can make the argument that a block TE is more relevant than a receiving one so we might as well cut LaCosse.

Based on performance I don't think either Skipper or Izzo are particularly likely to be picked up to be honest but both have certain physical traits that could of course make them attractive targets.

The major difference is that Skipper got more highlighted because of how the team slow played Wynn's camp. Izzo was just another one of the TEs.

I'll only add that it looked as though Brady wasn't afraid to throw to Izzo and that says something (what, I don't completely know).
Bill Belichick Praises Ryan Izzo’s ‘Instincts’ As Receiving Tight End

To be fair I think his seam route against the Panthers might have been the first true catch from Brady that anyone who is not visiting camp has seen Izzo make. For some reason they have not been throwing much his way.
That's fair which is why I attached BB's view of him which is positive/negative.

I could see BB also going with 7 OL on the week 1 roster to secure some of this young talent.
Could you cite when the Pats have ever gone with just 7 OL? Thanks..

The Patriots invested in Froholdt and Cajuste. Froholdt will be on the roster in all likelihood because I've not heard anything that said that he sucks and was a bad pick.. On the contrary. I've heard he's been good considering the limited experience he has. He still has a long way to go, but that was expected.

Cajuste will remain on the NFI until he ready.

Croston can play both tackle and guard. He's not great, but he's been in the system for 3 years.
