Brady wanted a new 3 year commitment.
Pats said no.
Pats offered an incentive based bump to this final year.
Brady said screw
Brady countered: I’ll take your bullsh*t incentive based adjustment if you forfeit your right to tag or trade.
Bob Kraft: uh oh...
Bill: Give him some cash but not as much as we offered thru incentives
Bob Kraft: What about the team control?
Bill: Your call Robert. Your son already destroyed any leverage we would have had when he said Brady can go out on his terms.
Bob Kraft: I spend extra time in Florida and the kid gives the house away
Bob Kraft: What about next year?
Bill: I’ve been stacking the D and fortifying the run game for the past 2 years. No big deal if Brady bolts. The AFC East will always be ours

Did you just have a stroke?

Well you can’t accuse me now of pushing the media narrative.

Brady gave an interview today reiterating he wants to play to 45. Why would he do that a week aftwr signing a 1 year contract and saying we’ll what happens in March next year. He’s not that stupid. Clearly he wants to get things moving again and firm up forward years and the sooner the better.

He could have not mentioned this or kept quiet on it. He very carefully chooses what he’s saying in interview.

Tom Brady still plans to play to 45

You can’t tell me Brady is happy with 1 year deal with Pats and then starts yapping immediately about playing a lot longer.

Or it could be that both parties want to play it year-by-year. Brady will sit down next March with the team and figure out his worth and what he's willing to take, as compared to moving across the country, and Kraft/BB will decide whether it's worth it or not.

This could just be both sides putting together one-year deals to protect against any old-man cliff-diving, so to speak. Brady is self-aware enough to realize that every off-season is going to be a time for him to re-evaluate.

It's not about the money, obviously - he doesn't need any.
Is it about his ego? He's the consensus GOAT, so I doubt it.

If you don’t think there are egos involved in this then you’re crazy.

There are plenty...Felger, Mazz, Bedard...

I've been with the same company for 30+ years. Every contract can get testy, but after a while, you get to the point where there's enough trust built in to take a reasonable approach.

I watched Brady and BB after that last SB win...yeah, they really want to get away from each other. Desperately, I tells ya!

I don’t think anyone wants to get away from anyone else but I believe Tom feels he’s earned a long term deal. I also believe Bill feels as if he knows what’s best for the team and that is to see how Brady looks year to year.

This is the first time Brady has had to sign a piece of paper that is tangible evidence that he won't be the Pats' QB forever. He had to sign the document. Remember when his Dad was asked about his eventual retirement, and said, "It will be ugly." I interpreted that as being about his competitiveness not allowing his mind to register the slip in performance, and being angry about how it was all unfolding around him.

And also, this is the first contract that acknowledges that the Pats are actively preparing for that day in the not-too-distant future.

So, this is all probably tough on the guy. I've no idea what it is like to be that competitive, but this process must create a lot of anxious energy for him. He's not a Buddhist.

I hope it isn't ugly, as his Dad predicted, but there's no doubt it will be interesting. And at any given point, we'll be lucky to have 20% of the relevant information.

From Curran’s report a few days ago the Brady camp were looking for a multi-year deal, and Curran is pretty connected to Pats players. If Brady was fine going year to year why did he put in his no franchise tag clause which allows him to hit free agency?

The logical conclusion is Brady wanted multiple years but the Pats are the ones who want to take it year by year. If he plays well this year he can take multi year offers from other teams and come back to the Pats and say match the years. It’s then in Bill and Bob’s court. Hopefully it never comes to that and he resigns before free agency, but being a free agent is his leverage.

Obviously.

After all, if this were only about winning, Brady would have signed a 3 year contract for $10M a year or less.

Makes sense.

You're right. He doesn't need any money. Except the $5m in incentives he renegotiated last year to his contract. And except the $8m bump he renegotiated to his salary to $23m this year. Besides that he doesn't need any money.

I don’t give one shyte about how Brady feels about the contract. He can talk all day about how he wants to play to 45, but his talk doesn’t magically guarantee that it’ll happen, nor can the team in any way assume it will.

The contract signed is the right contract. At Brady’s age he needs to be year-to-year, with a manageable dead cap hit at any point. Good for NE for putting in the negotiating effort to make that contract happen.

That's a bit harsh. I don't give one shyte about how Biffins feels about Brady's contract but I care that Brady feels satisfied that it was worked out for all involved and he can freely focus on playing football.

That's an insane attitude. The whole crux of my argument is that Brady is not happy and this could potentially lead to dissatisfaction and us losing him.

I remember Adam Vinateiri never let the Pats make an offer when he left as he felt so aggrieved at that point.

Once a free agent, Vinatieri didn't give Patriots a chance - The Boston Globe

How can Brady's satisfaction with the contract not a pertinent issue? Brady could have a great year and could still leave us if he's that unhappy about how this was handled. Or might not be willing to take a hometown discount next year if he feels aggrieved.

I feel your view on this is very antagonistic and abrasive.

Just a reminder how quickly "it'll never happen" becomes "it happened".

Some quotes from the above link

``A lot of teams had the misconception of, `Adam Vinatieri isn't going anywhere,' " Vinatieri said. ``It was a problem.

``That's why I switched agents. Once I did that, people started saying, `I guess he really is willing to listen.' People needed to know I was serious about seeing what was out there. Once teams truly believed I might be available, the phone started ringing off the hook."

Indianapolis president Bill Polian was initially skeptical when he learned Vinatieri wanted to talk with the Colts.

``I was very surprised Adam was looking at other teams," Polian said. ``When I talked with his agent, I made one thing very clear. I like Mr. Kraft and Scott [Pioli], but I was not interested in being a stalking horse for the New England Patriots. I wasn't interested in driving up the price for them. But the agent told me, `It's over with the Patriots.'

``That's when we got very interested."

``The final negotiations were done within a matter of 24 hours."

Vinatieri said he has no regrets about not giving the Patriots a chance to counter the offer.

``They had so many chances to sign me. They had my whole franchise year [in 2004], and this past season, and the early part of the offseason.

``They chose to do what they did. There's no animosity on my part. I love the Kraft family. Bill Belichick is a great coach. I'll miss my buddies who are still in that locker room. I hated to leave, but when it's a business, sometimes you have to make tough decisions. They could have kept me. They didn't.

``Everybody knows I had a great run in New England," Vinatieri said. ``I enjoyed my experience there, but this is a business.

``The Patriots clearly expressed to me that it was a business by the decisions they made. So I had to examine my options."

``I understand the business. I'm not naive. But [2004] was a good time to get a long-term deal done. I wish they had."

He's not the only one. Owner Robert Kraft said yesterday Vinatieri's decision to leave remains personally disappointing to him.

``To this moment, I'm very sad he is not part of this team," Kraft said. ``He'll always be a permanent part of the great legacy of the New England Patriots. But this is a business.

``Adam had to do what was right for him personally. I understand that. And I have great confidence that our football staff always does things that will put us in the best position to win future football games."

Although Vinatieri and the Patriots continue to insist their dealings were without rancor, it was hardly a warm and fuzzy departure for such a high-profile star and clutch performer. In his first public comments on how Vinatieri got away, Belichick answered, ``It's a longer story than it's worth telling, and it doesn't make any difference. He's not here."

Vinatieri, meanwhile, chose not to notify the Patriots when he reached terms with the Colts.

``I never did contact anyone," Vinatieri said. ``I think Scott Pioli saw it on some league transmission.

``They [the Patriots] were a little shocked with how things turned out, but I don't really understand why. Again, they had their opportunities."

``It was a great chapter in my life, but I've moved on," Vinatieri. ``There will always be a special place in my heart for the Patriots and the fans, I won't deny that. But it's disrespectful to my current team to be in that mind-set.

``I'm a Colts fan now."

Can't wait for you to compare Brady's situation with the way Chad " Ochocinco" Jackson left.

How about Albert "We Hardly Knew Ye" Haynesworth?

You're so clever and witty.

Didn't mean to ruin your latest tea leave reading session while Mercury is in retrograde.
