Brady contract situation (Merged - UPDATED:Deal Done)

The reality is, Tom has 1 to 3 seasons left. He is wealthy well beyond most of our comprehension, so he and his kids and their kids don't need the money. He is doing it because he loves the game and wants to be respected.

The Patriots have to prepare for life after Tom. Giving him a long term contract seems completely un Patriot like to me. All of you who are crying about giving him a long term deal now, would be *****ing about it in 3 years if Brady wasn't playing any longer and the team was in cap hell because of the long term deal you want them to sign him to.

If his play is outstanding this year, and the Patriots refuse to pay him what he is worth for the following season I will be mad at the Pats. If Tom refuses to negotiate this off season and leaves for a year or two I will be pissed at him.

I would keep going year to year as long as he wants to, and is able to play at that high level.
My alter ego...well-done.

Anyone that says it’s easy to duplicate the results of having the GOAT coach and QB together for 20 years should be locked up.
They very likely already are...

If Tom has a great year and Tom takes a $50m per year offer next season from some playoff worthy team instead of the best offer from Pats of $25m, would you be pissed at Tom or the Pats ?

To me it would be obvious. I’d be pissed at Kraft/BB for letting things get to that point.

What playoff worthy team would have 50 million in cap space?

I'm not pissed at you because you're a bag of laughs.

Theoretically almost anyone could structure a contract with 4 voidable years and spread out the $50 cap hit. It'd be a big gamble though because of the dead cap in Year 2. If Year 1 doesn't work out, GM who gives that contract probably gets fired.

That is why you would suck at being a GM.

If Tom wants an unreasonable amount of money I would be pissed at him. If he is negotiating in good faith and the Patriots don't agree and don't have a better option, then I would be pissed at them.

They won't need $50m, because of the cap games teams play. But, of note, and among other options:
  • Mariota will be a FA.
  • The Rams could make Goff a clean cut and have plenty of money available.
  • If Dallas doesn't extend Prescott, there'd be money available there.
  • Denver could move on from Flacco, and the money would be there.

The most enjoyment I get in football is watching the Patriots win. Much as I love watching Tom Brady, at the point the Patriots are a better team without him then it is finally time to move on. I don't believe in rewarding players for past performance, only future potential.

If there's one thing I've learned in the past few days is that there is a fairly clear delineation on this board between 1)Brady fans who love Tom first and are secondarily Pats fans and 2) Patriots fans who love the team first and are secondarily Tom fans. As a Pats fan since the first game in 1960, the day Tom leaves will be my saddest fan day since 1960, but I'll continue to be just as rabid with my fandom as ever. It'll be interesting to see what this board looks like when he's gone. And I don't mean any of this as a criticism of anyone. It just is what it is.

You think Tom accepting $50m instead of the max offer of $25m from Pats is him not negotiating in good faith? Really?

What is good faith? Accept anything the Pats offer?

And what do you base future potential on besides past performance? In Tom’s case I guess his age?

I've been a Patriots fan since the 1970's. Brady's been a Patriot for only about the last 20 years. I'll be gone when Brady's gone.

For me, at least, it's not about being a Patriots fan or Brady fan. It's about the **** show that the NFL has become.

Perhaps rather than getting our panties in an uproar, we could wait and see
a. how well he does this year
b. if he still wants to play next year
c. if he does well and still wants to play next year if he reaches a deal before free agency with the Pats.

Once a-b-c are figured out and if all those lead to him going to free agency, I will worry about how much he is getting offered, and if after all those things occur and it leads him to leaving the Patriots, I will then decide who received the wrath of Moose. However, throwing out random numbers which are in no way based upon reality, and asking me how I might feel about them seems like a pointless debate. What if he takes $1 and goes to the Jets, how would that make you feel? Kind of pointless right?

I hope he plays a long time then, because I would miss your contributions to this board.

Thank you for the kind words.

I fully understand that sentiment, and I've had moments when I've temporarily shared it. After the events of recent years, who the f### wouldn't? But, I just love the game and the team experience too much to abandon it. But, I certainly understand why some might opt out.

Hard for me to imagine Brady playing for another team. Time with his family has been one of his stated goals and is why he has not participated in OTA's the past 2 years, If he joins a new team you'd have to think he'd need to put in a ton more time to get acclimated to his teammates and the system. Plus it seems likely that wherever he lands he will not be close to where the family lives - is that acceptable to him? As good as Brady is he will need to find a team that is competitive for a Super Bowl, has ample cap space and is willing to construct a roster around someone with a limited shelf life. There will be few teams that may fit the criteria - just seems like a long shot vs staying with the Pats even if the money is a little less.

Are you saying it’s not possible to be a Pats fan first and disagree with a Kraft/BB decision?

Please. If they are still winning you won't be going anywhere so get off your high horse.
