2001 Patriots Own a Peculiar Record

Did they let them? I thought the Pats said that was how it was going to be.
Yeah, I’m sure the Pats just told them, just feels like the league would get all weird about it today.

01 team beat a really good Pittsburgh team on the road and a potential dynasty team in the rams...so they are often underrated

04 was the best team by far. Not even close. Held a record breaking peak version of Peyton manning to 3 points, blew out a 15-1 STACKED team on the road, then defeated a very talented 13-3 Eagles team in the Super Bowl

In retrospect, I’m shocked they let them do it. Funny to think of the Rams, they probably felt stupid they didn’t do it.
What was the NFL going to do when NE refused to be introduced individually? Have NE forfeit the game?

I don't think the 06 team was that great. Manning played like crap that postseason. Pats 01 pass D was incredible.

01 had better receivers as well in a prime Brown and Patten. Smith was better than LoMo and sluggish Dillon

01 wins 20-16
Colts rush defense carried them in 06. From historically bad in regular season to great in post season...
Brady 2001---60/97 ...572 yards and 1 TD/1 int rating 77.34 (3 games)
Manning 2006--97/153.. 1134 yards and 3TD/7 int.. rating 73.27 (4 games)

My most favorite team by far....in all of sports, IMO.

That season was MAGICAL....coupled with me being able to score tickets for 3 games all season before the bandwagon got full....
The 2001 team formed a brotherhood
i still get chills when I hear..."and now, choosing to be introduced as a team, the New England Patriots" Best superbowl TEAM ever....
Indicative of just how sick, stupid, and destructive local Boston media are, that Bill had to fight baseless criticism for keeping Brady in there. But, like always, really, in Patriots history, the team also fought media controversy.

The players who supported Grogan and Flutie were as right as those who preferred Bledsoe were completely wrong.

Bob Sanders came back for the playoffs. He was the difference.

Nah, just be annoying about it, you know. “Sources say league officials have pressured Robert Kraft to blah blah blah”

Vinatieri helped, 5 FGs in the wild card round against Ratbirds. To quote Dungy, "money"

That was hilarious to me.. for years Manning fans claimed AV won those SBs, carried Brady blah blah blah.. first year with Manning he scores every point to win a playoff game, something that had never happened with Brady, regular or post season.

I think the NFL actually liked the idea. Post 9/11 , we are all Patriots, being united etc..

Another bit of trivia if it's right:

Ok, I'm going to be 'that guy' but only because when you say something like "that has NEVER happened" it challenges the rest of us to contradict this statement

So here's two that I came up with..........

2001 - Pats 12, Bills 9
2003 - Pats 9, Browns 6

There is no denying they beat some good teams, but the opponents don't paint the entire picture.

If that were the case, you'd be saying the 2007 Giants are the best team in history.

That’s true, everyone liked us until 2007.
...what?

Denigration, dismissal, contempt and hatred of the Patriots has been rampant in local and national media, in the league and of course among opponents and their fans since the Beatles broke up. Please.

Just from 2001-2006, when we started winning titles, there is an encyclopedia of trashing that dwarfs any and all criticism ever directed at the half dozen NFL dynasties that preceded us, combined.

This led to FakeGate I by new commissioner Goodell in September 2007.

What was the NFL going to do when NE refused to be introduced individually? Have NE forfeit the game?
:rolleyes:I have to preface this with the obvious admission that I would not trade what's happened or our success this century for anything.

I simply seek to point out facts which reveal that we've been good at professional football in New England for a long time, and opportunities for greatness - championship greatness - have been there for us, just not taken advantage of until Belichick was hired.

The similarities of Grogan and Brady's sophomore seasons here are numerous and striking, and you can safely say that the only difference between them is Ben Dreith and Walt Coleman.

But Doug Flutie's first shot at regularly starting in the NFL also has much in common with Tom's, the major difference being the head coach.

Patriots' Record:

1988: 1-3, 6-5; Flutie 7-3; Home 5-0
2001: 1-3, 6-5: Brady 14-3: Home 7-1

Team Defense:

1988: 5th in NFL in yards and points
2001: 24th in yards, 6th in points

Team Offense:

1988: 27th in yards, 24th in points
2001: 19th in yards, 6th in points

Both the Bengals and Bills had 12-4, division-winning seasons, but zero playoff experience, which the Patriots had in abundance. Stephens was better than Thomas or Woods, and did not fumble. The difference is Flutie.

Berry's decision to once again insert the mediocre at best Tony Eason who hadn't played all year, who consistently ended our 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986 seasons by losing, when all we had to do was defeat a lousy Bucs team and a sub-.500 Broncos team to get into the playoffs, remains as astonishingly stupid today as it was then.
