Yes on the first part, hard no on the second part. The Lakers WERE in a unique situation whereby a star player had actually declared his intentions to sign with the Lakers in 2020. He was already theirs if they had just either waited a year, or waited until midsession when the price would have been way, way less. So they paid through the nose for a player who could have been theirs for free. Now they have no cheaper talent or assets to build around. Yes, LeBron is declining, LeBron at 75% is still a darn good player, and you can be sure he will space out his minutes and effort for the postseason.
Dumb. Dumb. Dumb move. They took a massive asset (Davis’s desire to sign with them) and neutralized it (giving up a lot of smaller assets for the right to the player, who would already be signing with them if they just waited.)
Imagine this is the Patriots. Julio Jones publicly declares he’s signing with New England when his contract expires next year because he wants to play with Tom Brady. Does Belichick then trade a first round pick, Joe Tunney, and JC Jackson so he can get him this season too?
