NBA Draft - Trades - Free Agents

- We did not trade Tatum....thank god!!!
Here's hoping the real Tatum is the rookie who showed so much promise, and not the sophomore slump Kobe junior of this season.

Danny and the Celtics are at a major disadvantage as they are not considered a destination for the majority of star players. Cannot blame him for being reticent to trade for AD when his stated intention is to leave after one year especially after seemingly being burned by Kyrie. Would have been the same deal with Leonard last year. I guess you can do it then hope but it leaves you extremely exposed if they leave. The Lakers conversely have a huge competitive advantage. There was nothing "smart" about signing Shaq or more recently LeBron but because players love LA for a multitude of reasons they are always in the mix. Players call the shots as the money offered does not differentiate teams.

The future of the C's hinges on at least one of Tatum or Brown turning into a top 10 player and the other reaching allstar level. Without that they will need to get lucky and find a diamond in the rough in the draft if they ever have a chance to seriously compete for a title.

If the Clippers add Kawhi, given they're already significantly better than the Lakers, they'll remain better than the Lakers. Post-trade, the Lakers are going to have to convince almost every vet FA to play for SFA to construct a remotely competitive NBA Playoffs bound roster in the West.

I'm not displeased Boston didn't mortgage the farm for a guy I'm not convinced has championship pedigree but I am concerned the organization doesn't appear to understand what direction it's headed in.
Lmao, no they’re not. The Lakers have Anthony Davis and LeBron James. And they’re probably not done and will more than likely have their own big three. Just adding Leonard wouldn’t put the Clippers over the top (and this assumes Leonard doesn’t actually go to the Lakers). I hate the Lakers with a fiery passion, but they’re going to be lethal.

I hate this 2nd guess

Jae Crowder and Brittle Isaiah Thomas weren't going to take this team anywhere.

The draft pick would have given them a point guard.

It’s because this generation is sensitive and doesn’t like being criticized. They don’t want the pressure to win another championship for a historically great franchises like the Celtics or Lakers. Dwight Howard even admitted one of the reasons he left the Lakers was because he couldn’t take the local media criticizing him which was unfair. They should’ve pointed the finger at how dumb the Lakers were for trading for Steve Nash.

What was not smart about signing Shaq? Whether or not the Lakers won a championship with him, it was a very smart move as he was a major draw. The hype out here in LA was unreal when they traded for him. And they only gave up Vlade Divac for him.

That is asking a lot as the NBA is a total crapshoot on Drafting and developing star players.

Lakers won’t make the finals if they can’t play defense and shoot 3’s.

If the East stays the same, Celtics will have no shot getting out of there.
It won't stay the same. Hello draft and Clint Capela.

Either way Celtics aren't making the Finals. That's as likely as Chargers winning the Super Bowl.

Or the Lakers making the playoffs. Of course that's hyperbole, but I'm confident the Celtics will get to the finals before the Fakers do.

Good luck with that.

Lakers were the 4th seed until LeBron went down. So if they stay healthy, they’re going to make the playoffs.

I actually think that’s an insult to the Celtics being compared to the Chargers. lol.

As long as they have Rivers, they will never win.

Fun fact: Brady is 7-0 against Rivers which includes 2-0 in the playoffs.

Agreed. They have 23.7 in cap space. No more max FA for them. Also, LeBron is breaking down...fast. His FT percentage was the lowest of his career and that tells me something. It may be nothing but when FTs start going...the rest is soon to follow. This was a desperation move and one the Lakers had no choice but to make.

the Celtics better do something soon as the Tatum and Brown will be looking for a pay day soon.

Yes on the first part, hard no on the second part. The Lakers WERE in a unique situation whereby a star player had actually declared his intentions to sign with the Lakers in 2020. He was already theirs if they had just either waited a year, or waited until midsession when the price would have been way, way less. So they paid through the nose for a player who could have been theirs for free. Now they have no cheaper talent or assets to build around. Yes, LeBron is declining, LeBron at 75% is still a darn good player, and you can be sure he will space out his minutes and effort for the postseason.

Dumb. Dumb. Dumb move. They took a massive asset (Davis’s desire to sign with them) and neutralized it (giving up a lot of smaller assets for the right to the player, who would already be signing with them if they just waited.)

Imagine this is the Patriots. Julio Jones publicly declares he’s signing with New England when his contract expires next year because he wants to play with Tom Brady. Does Belichick then trade a first round pick, Joe Tunney, and JC Jackson so he can get him this season too?

LOL, OK you are officially a troll.;)

Lakers may not have money for 3rd max free agent due to Davis trade bonus.

And there it is. Yeah, this is why it was foolish to pay that much. Only the Lakers were foolish enough to blow up their future for one dude. Who has injury concerns as well. I hashed all this over time and time again on a Celtics forum..only to be told by the powers that be that AD would be a Celtic and I was being a negative person who didn’t know what I was talking about.

Thank you for the correction. You are correct they didn’t necessarily need to trade for him. As for the rest you are fully correct. The Julio analogy is a perfect one. I always thought the supposed packages for AD were insane and weren’t true. Holy hell when I saw what the Lakers paid? Oh man.

Your comment above would have been roasted on that Celtics forum. Feels like a whole different world here. Refreshing.

Yeah, la has and unfair competative advantage for the reasons you stated. Basketball is dead to me for this reason, how the players like lebraun decide where their going to play and who their going to play with and just how the game is played today.

You just never know what could happen in a year. Say the Knicks trade for Davis, pair him up with another star and it works out as they become a winning ball club. Does AD still leave for LA or does he stay where he’s at?

Yeah the Lakers gave up quite a bit but all those players are replaceable. The best player (Ingram) is being upgraded to AD. I also consider it a win to get the ball family circus off my roster.

I’m sticking with facts. Fact: Davis, through his agent, said he is signing with LA in 2020 so other teams should know this is a one-year gig if they trade for him.

There are plenty of unlikely what-if scenarios you can use to justify any decisions, no matter how bad it is (like this one.). The Lakers caved to the “show me now!” pressure of the moment from fans and (probably) LeBron. Short-term it makes them better. Long-term, the consequences of this decision is likely to greatly hinder their chances. It isn’t about acquiring Davis - it’s about absurdly overpaying to do so. How often do you have the “free” option? They chose to pay a huge haul instead of take for free. It’s impatience.

The only reason you sign Lebron in the first place is to win now. The Lakers window changed once that happened.
