Great f___ing question. Drives me nuts. Who cares? Why does Wes Welker have to come up in every Julian Edelman thread?
Maybe the insecure JE11 lovers have nothing else to do.

I get what you're saying and you'd be right if that were the end of it but his big plays after those essentially erased his mistakes and were key ones in the wins. Welker never got that next levelIt's funny how reputations are changed on the finest margins. Edelman had a drop that led to an interception in the AFC Championship game against KC (and a possible fumble on a punt). He also had a number of drops in the Atlanta SB. If the Pats lose both then perhaps he gets the unfair Welker treatment.

I would doubt it. See my sig...
How many memorable big-time, postseason catches can you recall Welker making? I literally recall none.
Edelman - Too many to list.
Amendola - Too many to list.
Brown - Too many to list.
I generally believe that “clutch” play is overrated and just random/small sample size. In that sense, Amendola, Edelman, and Brown weren’t necessarily “clutch.” They were just darn good receivers who brought their best, as they typically did all the time, in the many big games they participated in.
It’s more than just a couple of plays that contributes to these reputations. Troy Brown fumbled a punt in 2005/06 at Denver, but no one thinks differently of him. Nor would anyone think differently had the Patriots lost (and you failed to mention in the same game you cited, Edelman beyond redeemed himself with multiple tight window catches in traffic in third down.)
But I also believe some athletes do choke under pressure. They just fail to deliver because the moment becomes too much for them (see: Manning, Peyton.)
I don’t know if Welker is really a choker. I know he played in a slew of big postseason games and didn’t deliver any notable plays that made you jump out of your seat after biting your nails down.
Belichick believes certain players are better with those small margins and pressure situations.
Edelman just seemed to have come up bigger in the 4th quarters.
Not sure I can agree with this one Shmess. I'm thinking it was Gronk that helped create the inside space that Julian thrived in, rather than the reverse. But who caresGood point.
Love Gronk, no doubt, but the most crucial non-Brady player on the O the past half-decade has proven to be Edelman.
They've won 3 SB's in the past 5 years when he is healthy.
The two they have come up short? 2015 when he was hobbled on a stapled together broken foot and 2017 when he was out with the ACL.
They won in 2016 without Gronk.
Other than #12, Edelman is the most crucial part.

As a football player for the New England Patriots, it is not even close.
But nice lawyerly tactic to narrow it to "slot receiver".
Slot receiver - - arguable.
Edelman has clearly been the better overall receiver, PR, RB, ST and CB (not to mention the 100% QB TD completion rate). He has 3 rings. He caught the winning TD in SB 49, the miracle catch in SB 51, and was the MVP of SB 53.
I don't recall much of what Welker did in his two SB losses (except for one play)
Edelman is one of the 10 greatest Patriots of all time. Welker, though a GREAT player, doesn't make top-20.

2016?
Last 5 years:
Healthy Edelman = Ring
No Healthy Edelman = No Ring
They won without Gronk in 2016.
Both great.
.
It takes a special kind of person..........
Are you kidding? Welker was the spark in Superbowl 42!
Welker would be SuperBowl 42 MVP if Asante Samuel intercepts that throw, or referee declares Manning to be "in the grasp", or Rodney punches that ball out of the helmet.
Wes Welker has 11 catches for 103 yards in a 14-10 win if any of the above happens, and we're all talking Welker to Canton after his incredible 6 seasons of 672 catches!! including 3 times leading the league.
I love Edelman, but I don't see the need to throw shade at Welker's accomplishments.
Looking at those lists my thought is Tanguay is a bleepin' idiot.
Picking a top 5 from that group (keeping in mind rings, heart & longevity matter as much if not more than raw talent):
Gronkowski
Edelman
Brown
Moss
Welker
No Edelman? Lololololol. He’ll go down as either #2 or #3 best player of the dynasty. Heroic moments effing matter!!! Even worse, how could anyone rank Amendola ahead of him? That’s just trolling.
That’s not a knock on Amendola, as he was so money. Very hard to not include him...just not over Edelman. Removing Gronk from the list since he’s a tight end solves that problem.
The Patriots love to use Edelman early in games and in the 4th quarter of contested games. When they want to set the tone and when they want to close the deal. Edelman has nowhere near the talent of Moss, but on a late 4th quarter drive for the win, I would rather have Edelman than Moss every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
