Montez Sweat - PTP - Miss St - SR - DE

Strengths

    • Physique - 6’5+/260, 35 3/4 Arms, 10.5 Hands. Prototype height & a frame capable of handling a few more pounds. Has + length with long arms & legs.
    • First Step - Always on point & quick off the snap. At times very good but when unleashed Sweat has a very powerful, very large first step. It’s his stride length & power that really jumps off the screen in terms of his get-off. Sweat’s first 3 strides can really eat up yards causing opponents over-set on the edge & give way inside. Can really be scary when he times the snap.
    • Pass Rush/Moves - .Go-to & maybe most effective is a stab/snatch. At times he’ll deliver a jolt with both hands to his opponents chest to knock him off balance before pulling him forward. He’ll use a bunch of variations off the long arm/snatch (push/pull. club/rip). Will use chops to soften the edge before a rip to finish. At times has a nice bull rush where he'll extend those long arms. Push/pull. Hesitation/stutter step to go inside or use it to clear space up the arc. Will purposely rush upfield, get his man out of position & kick back inside. Usually knocking a tackle back with a club because momentum is on his side.

    • Run Defense - At times can set the edge & looks like a future 43 end but has to play with consistent leverage. Shoots out low, gets underneath/extends with his long arms or lands punches to stay clean. Offers very good chase & pursuit, can slice right down the line & beat his man backside. Smart defender that has seen a ton of variations of rpo/ro & doesn’t panic. At times takes great angles to cut off space & his stride length only helps. + Motor. Will routinely chase down ball carriers downfield. Understands what blocks are coming at him & has the technique to win, power/length to stack/shed. Doesn't sell out for stats, does his job in terms of responsibilities on the edge/filling his lane. His dirty work lead to a lot of flash fpr others.
    • Has consistently shown the toughness, I.Q. & durability you want to see. Put together an incredible combine & has multiple years of very good production against some future pros & great college players. Always plays with effort/hustle.
    • Hands - At times very active & effective. Will look to stay clean by attacking an opponents hands. Has some juice to his punches & looks to have pretty strong hands from the way he handles his man at times.
Concerns/Question Marks

    • Not a bender, stiffness shows coming around the corner. Has some flexibility in his ankles but he'll never win that way. Tight hips show when he has to change direction/move laterally.
    • At times will come off the ball too high & loses too much leverage. Has to add some weight before he can out muscle anyone.
    • Has a nice array of moves but has to develop his counters in terms of quickness & readiness. More than a few opportunities left of the field because his counter was slow or ineffective.
    • Looks like a strict 43 End with little versatility to play standing up, in coverage or kicking inside on subs.
Outlook/Thoughts
Sweat just made the PTP list. At first glance he might not seem like the typical Patriot but offers a ton of qualities New England looks for at that position. Size, length, + Run defender & can rush the passer in a variety of ways. Sweat is a team first guy that has shown toughness & durability needed to make a successful jump. Sweat won't all of a sudden become a bender. He can't control that. He wins with length, effort & a blend of moves. So some added size/strength to his lower half & continued hand work development to help his attack are the two areas I see him improving on the most to help his game.

Zach Allen - PTP - Boston College - SR - DE

Strengths

    • Physique - Big & Burly at 6’5/280 with long arms. Strong lower half/core. Thick throughout entire body. Big boy that isn't a finished product. Lots of potential with NFL training program & making football a full time job.
    • Run Defense - Very good all around run defender. Smart, savvy & tough as nails. Comfortable against the run/rpo/ro. Very patient, eyes always up looking at the ball. Shows ability to diagnose, understand & defeat different blocks to make a play. Great instincts, might not always make the play but rarely fooled. Very reliable & strong defender at the p.o.a. Always set on winning with his strong hands inside. Presses with length but also uses quick accurate punches to stay clean while gaining ground with his feet. 2 gap power outside on edge. Anchors, Stacks & has power to shed. Shoots low with a punch underneath that sometimes turns into a long arm, keeping his outside shoulder stays clean & will flow to the outside. Will often use similar tactics on stunts to keep linemen off him. Hard to move & at times can handle doubles. When asked to play inside did a nice job off slanting & knifing through the line or block.
    • Pass Rush/First Step - When allowed to get aggressive Allen can really get after the QB. Was often asked to play the run 1st & sometimes 2nd but when let loose he can ruin your day. Wins with a very nice first step (Esp for a bigger guy), length & motor. Allen comes out low & has a powerful 1st step. By 2 & 3 he's like a pickup truck coming at you. Allen plays with + hand usage in all phases. He routinely uses sudden little swipes to soften the edge. At his core he’s a mover & redirector but has plenty of tools in his bag. You’ll see his long arm turn into a snatch. Club/Rip. Chop/Rip. Swim. Nice push/pull he’ll work off his bull rush. Again though he understands how to use his power to redirect to get to the QB.
    • Intangibles - Allen has a +non-stop motor. Always working, fighting & trying to put himself in position to make a play. Effort shows up every game. No such thing as taking plays off with him. Awareness & I.Q. are also very evident. Might not always make the play but very rarely caught with his pants down. Hands are always up to disrupt a pass. Tries to jump & clog passing lanes. Never quits on a play. Will chase down field, fight inside until whistle & play through pain routinely. Football player inside/out. Understands the work it takes to be great. Seems like he's watching film, working out & improving himself away game day/practice & plays with readiness to take on all situations. Has taken it upon himself to reach out to specialist to improve himself in terms of training in general, eating right & his pass rush (martial arts, hand work) Has that passion you love to see. Played noticeably hurt on more than a few occasions.
    • Versatility is real & made for today's game. 3 down player as is but has that classic inside/out rush look on passing downs/Sub-Package. At times strong enough & skilled enough to take on slower IOL. Allen has played both Rush End spots but also out wide. Usually 7/9T. Standing up. 3Tech. Over the nose. All gravy on the goose but he could be a dream for a multiple team.

    Concerns/Question Marks
  • Isn't the best athlete. Stop/start, bend isn't there. Not going to beat you laterally.
  • Body needs some work. Still carrying too much baby fat.
  • Not someone who can play standing up, drop in coverage & will need added strength to play inside on anything but passing downs.
  • Hand work has come a long way but he has to continue developing to become quicker on his 1st & counter.

Outlook/Thoughts

There aren't many prospects that scream New England Patriots more than Allen. He has the versatility, size/length, toughness & smarts the Pats love. Allen looks like a natural DE at the 7 or 9 technique with potential to play inside at the 3, 4, 5. A football player through & through. Allen loves getting dirty doing the little things needed to win a game. At the same time he can change the contest with sack, knocking a pass down or causing a fumble. Allen possesses a lot of upside with continued hand development & a full time NFL training program.

Brian Burns - JR - FSU - Rush/Edge

Strengths

  • Physique - Cut up 6'5/250 with some room to grow. Almost 34 inch arms with 10 hands. Prototype Rush OLB.
  • First Step/Burst - At it's peak his get off is near great. Long strider that jumps off the line no matter his stance. Coiled up in a 4. Loose, standing up. Its his stride length, efficient steps & closing speed that really make him dangerous though.
  • Pass Rush - Possess a variety of moves, has plenty in his tool box. His speed allows him to take advantage of overzealous linemen & he'll cross face with ease. + footwork sells the outside rush & takes the quickest path to the QB. You'll see him use a swim here as well. Also long arm, some push/pull & club. Has + lower half flexibility/ability to dip. If thats not enough has a top tier spin complete with ice pick. His footwork doesn't get talked about enough. Consistently putting himself in a good position, giving his man nothing to touch. Very efficient. At times does flash quick, effective hand(s)/placement but needs to continue to get stronger.
  • Run Defense - Burns has to add weight but he's not a bad run defender overall. Gives you that chase/pursuit from the backside & downfield. Not the biggest target to begin with, he does a good job getting skinny when knifing through the line. Not a killer on the line but at times sets a nice edge. Stands his ground to contain while forcing the play back inside.
  • Versatility - Burns athleticism creates a unique skill set. A silky smooth mover who looks like he shoot out to flat, run with RB's on a wheel & drop into zone. Just an easy mover who jumps off the screen. As mentioned above, can attack the QB both sides, different stances etc.
  • Motor/Toughness - Doesn't loaf, plays to whistle. Isn't the biggest dog but has that aggressiveness you want. Could take it up a notch but isn't shying away from getting dirty.

Concerns/Question Marks

  • Play/functional strength is lacking. Too often the play is dead if his opponent gets their hands on him. Young player that will most likely take some time before he gets his grown man strength. Not sure how many more lbs his body can handle so it but have to be a case of just waiting until he gets a little older. Has almost 0 power rush coming out. Again though he'll turn 21 at the end of April.
  • At times comes in with his hands down & let's tackles get their paws on him. Has utilize length at all times. Has to add more pop to his punches & violence in his attack. Has to keep those arms/hands up.
  • Has to understand & recognize limits especially defending the run. He won't out-muscle anyone or win with physicality at the next level. Just get pushed out of his gap. Doing too much could cost him the play.

Outlook/Thoughts

Burns has plenty of room for improvement but as a 20 year old hes very intriguing prospect. Especially if you run a 34 team & need a pass rush specialist. I do believe he can into a very effective DE but with so many players he'll take time to get there. Wherever you like him you're getting a player ready to make an impact day 1 with plenty of upside & potential to work with. Burns should benefit greatly going from college to pros & the coaching, training that comes along with it.

Josh Allen - PTP - Kentucky - JR - Rush/Edge

Strengths

  • Burst/Get Off - Effective, quick 1st step but its steps 2 & 3 he really accre win running the arc. At times explodes out of his stance with obvious power. Efficient, almost nothing wasted. Noticeable difference from years past.
  • Pass Rush - Has the speed, quicks & flexibility to take the corner. As mentioned above, takes very efficient path to QB for the most part. Displays Long arm, Swats/Chops before Rip. Swim. Used spin on occasion with little luck. That would definitely take his rush to another level along with some power.
  • Versatility - Legit 4 down player that can effect & influence the game from almost anywhere. Lined up 5, 7, 9 tech, slot, standing up, hand in dirt. + Rusher, run defender & in coverage. Allen isn't moving around for flash he can make an impact all over. Comfortable in space Allen wants to make a play on the ball in coverage.
  • Run Defense - Ideal slasher who can shoot down the line in chase/pursuit. At times stacks/sheds & holds an edge but could be more consistent. Effort is always there. Doesn't stop fighting or moving his feet. Doesn't like TE's trying to block him. Fast, fluid mover that works well in space.
  • Has the alpha mindset you want to see in a defender. Wants to be & thinks hes the best player on the field. Like most didn't take a straight path to college/nfl & has a chip on his shoulder that isn't going away. Wants to finish & be a playmaker. Very coachable & wants to be pushed.

Concerns/Question Marks

  • Has to play with more control & technique when setting the edge. Either tries to do too much or isn't properly set. Has to play with better leverage consistently & take what he can get. Has got peeking at the ball & will become noticeable off balance. Has trouble with down blocks comig at him & gets moved easily on doubles.
  • Has to develop a solid power move. Not a deal breaker but would go a long way.
  • Could clean up his get off but I suspect different stances, might play a part.
  • Position fit isnt the hardest but I'm not sure every DC gets this right. Not a full time edge player at this point imho.

Outlook/Thoughts

Very few prospects made or have taken a jump like Allen did this past year. Almost night & day compared to seasons past, Allen was a "do it all" defender that made game changing plays seemingly in every contest last season. Allen made huge strides in all areas. His rush was much more efficient & potent. Almost no wasted steps, well timed accurate hands & finish. Allen also stood out in the run game compared to years past. Definitely has room to improve but there was an obvious difference in his play strength, technique & overall nastiness in which he takes on a play. In coverage hes not just another body going through the motions. His quicks/lateral quickness & football I.Q. make him a legit option to drop into coverage. In other words its all on coaching at this point imho. Allen has the skill set to be a dynamic 4 down player for some team for a long time. He's a chess piece looking to be put in the best position to succeed.

Nick Bosa - JR - OSU - Rush/Edge

Strengths

  • Burst/Get Off - Top tier get off. Explodes & is consistently the 1st off the ball among top tier athletes. Long, powerful strider that rips up the turf.
  • Pass Rush/Hands - He's a Bosa so he strong, active, violent hands. Always looks to clear his opponents hands or works to find them. Accurate swats & punches. Almost identical double swipe as Big Bro Bosa. Does a fantastic job of reducing the surface area, almost sideways passing tackles. Has ability to get flat, flexibility to easily take corner. + Power through contact. Also displays bull rush, long arm, swim & club-chop/rip. Will put a tackle on his back with a rip move & enough momentum. Push/pull & has the lateral ability to cross face back inside. Complete rusher that will only get better.
  • Run Defense/Motor - Tough, versatile defender that doesn't give an inch & will chase down ball carriers for miles. + Chase/pursuit, darts down the los cut off angles. Motor always running high. 2 gap ability is there. Very tough to move coming head on, 1 on 1. Power player through & through. Excellent job at giving his man 0 grab/hold.
  • Versatility - Primarily pegged as a 43 end, I have little concern whether he's in a "43/34" front. He's also played 3T, 2T on occasion. No reason to think he couldn't develop into something more & take advantage of some mismatches inside with his skill set. Again this would be sparingly.

Concerns/Question Marks

  • Injury History - Torn ACL in high school & season ending groin surgery this past year

Outlook/Thoughts

Anthony Nelson - PTP - Iowa - DE - R/JR

Strengths

  • Physique - Huge, coming in at 6'7/270+, almost 35 inch arms. Definitely has some room for a few more lbs. Especially in his lower half.
  • Pass Rush/Hands - Not "bendy" but has some flexibility for 6'7/270 & can run the loop with some momentum. Loves push/pull, uses snatch variations, chop/rip, swim, can cross face. Good hands needs to be more consistent & always attack 1st. Reliable on stunts & frees up others. Worker that has some upside with hand development.
  • Run Defense - At times a + all around run defender. Has to commit to playing with leverage & not doing too much but sets a solid edge. Extends, locks out & can discard his man aside. Sniffs out misdirection. Can diagnose, flow, penetrate & make a play away from his lane. At times + hand work, has to come out low.
  • Plays with desired toughness & effort you want. Worker that doesn't mind getting dirty. Can diagnose plays, recognize whats in front of him Team player that is coachable & isn't about stats. Lots of upside in both pass/run & with his body.
Concerns/Question Marks
  • Inconsistent burst, expected at 6'7 but theres no explosion. Almost no "bend".
  • Inconsistent hand. At times comes in with arms/hands down & doesn't have the functional strength to recover. Has to get stronger & continue his hand development. Biggest areas where he can get & stay on the field.
  • Needs a solid/go-to counter. Inconsistent speed to power.
Outlook/Thoughts
Nelson is a fine developmental prospect with some upside. Teams like New England, who value size, length & the right attitude could place a higher value on him. The two areas he can make immediate improvements are added strength & hand development. He has to add some strength to play & sustain a career in the trenches. At times his hands flash in a nice way but there inconsistent & could get stronger too. He doesn't have the flash to blow by opponents, so this is where he'll live or die. A solid counter will help as well too but I see this further down the list.

L.J. Collier - PTP - TCU - Rush/Edge - R/SR

Strengths
  • Physique - 6'2/280 with 34' arms & 10' hands.
  • Pass Rush/Hands/Power - Decent first step but it's steps 2 & 3 where you see the acceleration & juice that allows him to get inside a tackles chest before their properly set. Great job at selling head/hip fakes, jab steps to keep his man off-balance & guessing. At times can get sideways to cut the corner. Offers Push/pull, Arm Over, Double swipe, Forklift, Spin, Hump, Long Arm. Power rusher that works for hands & has pop in punches. + Accurate paws. Style, body type, attitude suggests an inside nickel/sub rusher might be in his future.
  • Run Defense - Just like the rest of his game he gets aggressive as a run defender. Sets a solid, wide base & works up. Good job keeping contain. At times can handle doubles. Good tackle radius. Motor runs hot, fighter type that will chase you down.
  • Versatility - Collier is coming out of a system known for its demand for versatile, adaptive, tough players. Collier can attack the QB in a variety of ways. Playing standing up or with his hand on the ground.
  • Play Speed & Aggression - Play & strength are definitely there & should only improve with coaching & training. Better than testing suggest. Has the aggression you want to see when hes out there.

Concerns/Question Marks
  • Pass rush could use a little more variety & nuance. Gets ahead of himself trying to out-muscle opponents, which will lead to ground lost. Hesitant first step, false steps.
  • At times ducks/turns & leads with his shoulder, trying to bulldoze his man in the run game.
  • Limited experience & needs some t.l.c. in all areas. Energy, Effort is there. Needs a mentor to follow around & learn from. Never started at TCU.

Outlook/Thoughts

Grade - 7.40

Awesome write-ups, BGC. Are Charlie Omenihu, Joey Jackson & Jaylon Ferguson on the horizon?

Charles Omenihu - PTP - Texas - Rush/DE - SR

Strengths

  • Physique - First off the bus type. 6'5/280 with 36' arms.
  • Pass Rush/Hands - Rushes from all over. Can line up inside at 4i/4, shoot/knife or work back to the tackles outside shoulder to run the loop. At times shoots out low with high hands & delivers a good jolt. + job of punching first to take full advantage of his length. Displays club/rip, stab/club, push/pull, snatch, chop/rip. Long arm. Swat/Rip. Has some lower half flexibility. Room to improve but at times his hands are a big +. Strong, keeps them high & very active.
  • Run Defense - Sets a mean, firm edge from the 6-9 technique with proper hand usage, extension & leverage. Potential 2 gap from those spots. Can shoot down the line. Has ability to lock down his area.
  • Versatility/Effort - Lined up everywhere for Texas. With some added strength & improved technique Omenihu looks like a future multiple player. Already has experience & success rushing inside/outside with the body/build to expand that role. Displays the effort on the field & "want to" off the field in terms of coaching to be a fine player for a long time. Has the potential to rush from 4i-9 technique.
  • First Step - At times fires off the line & out of his stance. Very good straight-line speed. Powerful, long strides. Varies because of stance, technique but is an asset.
Concerns/Question Marks
  • At times footwork is a mess & will put him in bad positions that eventually end up with him off balance or on the ground.
  • A bit slow to really understand, react & attack to whats in front of him. Footwork should improve with added recognition & confidence.
  • Has to get stronger. Too easily moved or doesn't get enough of his man to win the rep. Everything else is there but added strength is a must.
  • Isn't the most "bendy" player & movement can look like hes lumbering at times to change his direction to the QB. Not someone who will be dropping in coverage.
  • Hands usually stay high but placement could be better better overall.

Outlook/Thoughts
Omenihu will excite some more than others for sure but he'll get a good look from everyone ... Teams like New England & Seattle will absolutely place a higher tag on Omenihu because of his physique, versatility/experience & length. He needs some time to get stronger & refine his approach but can make an impact year 1 imo. He's likely never setting any records in sacks but could be a solid performer along the DL for years to come.

Great stuff, I appreciate all the work you do!

One little technical note: including a lot of outside media (e.g. Twitter videos) chokes my browser so that it's really hard to read a thread. If nobody else has that problem, never mind! But I thought I'd mention it because I generally opt out of heavily embedded threads, and I really don't want to miss this one. :)

I've had problems before too w them. It sux I'm sorry. What works for you? Might not be able to do it in this thread but maybe for the future?

@patchick don't feel bad or listen to @reamer. I'm not the brightest bulb & have trouble w push/pull doors. This technical stuff on the internets drives me bonkers.

Most browsers have an option to turn off media autoplay @patchick -- that would probably address some of the performance issues if you're on older hardware.

Or just update to the 21st century, Grandma. :p

My Studebaker laptop runs just fine, sonny!

Nah, I have a fairly high-performance system because I deal with huge data files and often need to have multiple resource-intensive programs running simultaneously. There's just something about vbulletin + embedded media that my browser can't accept.

I’ve been under the impression he had long arms as well. But I’m reading some things that say his arms aren’t long... why is that?

No clue. Allen has left tackle-style 34 3/4" arms.
