SOME THOUGHTS
We know that his body is failing him, and that he very unlikely to be able to play a full season.
If Gronk is part of the 53 man squad, Belichick would expect him to play hard in camp and throughout the season. If Gronk plays every game, his availability and health for the playoffs is problematic.
I suspect that Gronk just wants to play in the playoffs, and perhaps the playoff run.
Gronk's decision isn't about money.

SUGGESTION
Gronk should consider ending this torture and file his retirement papers. He should consider keeping himself in top shape, with the idea of coming out of retirement for the playoffs, or not.
