I don’t know whether Hogan is coming back or not - if he does probably at a lower number. For someone supposedly doing little, got a lot of snaps. If he doesn’t though, it won’t be because Amendola took his spot.

The amount of times someone writes Amendola will replace Hogan is kinda confusing to me as both are not playing the same position. Dola is a bonafida slot receiver, Hogan is supposed to be a speed guy.

This is like when people wrote that Gilmore was replacing Logan Ryan last year. Made no sense.

I’m not sure why it would be so confusing. If you add someone you need to get rid of someone, and logically it would make sense if it was another wide receiver. So the thought is that amendola would replace hogan on the roster.

But Amendola does not replace Hogan. Bring in Dola and let Hogan go, you still need a guy to take the top off the defense - especially if Gronk goes (and even if he doesn’t). Amendola could come ( I doubt it) and Hogan could leave, but still need an outside WR.

Of course it's about two things: money and a roster spot. Obvious, right?

If the Pats are high on Berrios, McCarron, someone else who is young, perhaps from this year's draft, and it becomes a choice between Hogan or Dorsett at similar money, then they'll make the call.

Amendola? he hasn't been cut yet and how much would he cost?

Too many variables right now. Who will get cut that would take a prove-it deal? Who will get cut or offered for trade (Sanders or Cooks type of thing) that looks like an obvious upgrade?

I'd hate to go into next year with the same WR corps as this year, even though I like everyone in that corps! I like Hogan, like Dorsett, like Patterson, LOVE Edelman...but that looks to me like a #1, 2 3's, and a gadget.

No chance of that happening. Pats will go after a legit WR and probably draft someone. Gordon will probably be given a chance and they can keep him on the cheaps with a low tender.

There will be at least 10 WR in camp and they always bring in a vet to take a look at also.
Given all the UFAs it is tough to predict what will happen. You could see 2019:

JE
Gordon
X Free agent
DA
Dorsett

Then again they need to develop a little youth also (depending on the FA signed etc)

You're assuming that the league reinstates Gordon. I don't count on that at all.

Also, I'm totally rooting for the guy to straighten out, and think he's still a great receiver and would love to have him at cheap money, of course...but I wouldn't want to count on him making it to and through the playoffs.

How soon we forget, Pats don't win #5 without Hogan's contribution on last TD to tie with a key 3rd down catch.

Anyway, Pats just won #6 with basically 1 WR, 1 TE and 1 RB getting 86% of the catches, 93% of the passing yards, with an 86% completion: 18/21, 243 yds, 13.5 ypc.

Yes.

However, their MIGHT exist a team or two capable of shutting down the patriots running game, who can force us to rely on air passing game.

In any case, recommending that we rely on Edelman and Gronk for the vast majority of passing game in 2019 is just plain silly.

The patriots have been know for Brady spreading it around to 5 or 6 receivers.

IMHO, all the RB's should be potential receivers. That is the case now.

And yes, we should have 4 WR's or TE's that are reducing threats in any game where the passing game is important. Yes, I understand that in some games, we can rely on fewer, but there is no reason to plan on that.

Brady is the best of all time. Even so, the goal of the GM should be to have quality receiving threats, who fit into patriot game plans.

For me, we need to more than sign a free agent and count on the draft. We should aim for much more than Edelman, fa, Dorsett, Amendola and Patterson/draftee.
========
FOR ME
1) We can hire Amendola or someone else as our second slot receiver, or have Berrios. That is not an issue.
2) I'm fine with using a returner or 5th RB as a receiver a couple of times a game. All the RB's should be receivers or capable of running a screen.

This is nowhere enough to expect to compete in a passing league against good teams. At least it shouldn't be.

I think Hogan will want a payday. It's not gonna happen here. Regardless, his TD against Pittsburgh in the AFCCG will be a memory I won't forget. Nor will I forget his performance in the 28-3 SB. I wish him all the best going forward.

By your logic it is as valid to say Amendola is replacing Adrian Clayborn or Eric Rowe. You can only replace someone if you actually play the same role as him.

Time to move on.

Which I would be fine with with Dorsett as that guy. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but hogan wan’t exactly taking the top off any defense lately. I like the guy so it pains me to have to ‘argue against him’ but I think we’re over -romanticizing the plays he did make and failing to acknowledge that his best days are behind him.

Right, but my prediction is that if amendola is brought back and makes the final 53 it’s at the expense of hogan

Although has had some nice games and nice catches he is the definition of a JAG. He could easily be upgraded.

Hogan seems like a great guy and I really want him to do well, but other than a few teasingly great plays, he just can't seem to get open. I would be very surprised if he was back next year.
Perhaps a better word would be not get open consistently. He's been open but Brady didn't look his way or threw a bad ball.

Hogan was open loads of times during the games at the end of Josh Gordon's time here. I mean a lot.

For short money why not. But we need to find a legit wr 1 or bring in guys who can get separation.

Chris Hogan is a good kid but he may need to pass my test again.

For the right price, I would like to see Hogan back.
Sure. For the right price, I would welcome him as a depth option WR4-5. Same goes for Amendola. Both know the system well and would likely provide as much, if not more, as any other option. I just don’t want the team to need them, that’s all.
