Devin McCourty to Retire After Super Bowl Victory?

I never guys like McCourty retiring as money "freed up", even though that is a side effect, Devon is not only a very good safety, but an incredibly positive influence on this team, similar to a player-coach on the field and the community.. another "low maintainence" guy who just does his job.

He is also incredibly durable having missed about 5 games in his 9 year career....

Trouble is, I could see Chung follow closely. The way he play, he takes a lot of punishment. Good part is, Harmon's got a few years in his prime if we need that transition.

Landon Collins Adrian Amos
Are possible fits id look real hard at Tre Boston as well.
Hoping Devin and Patrick strap them back up again.

While being interviewed by Deion Sanders on NFLN at media night:
"I don't know what else would top winning a Super Bowl with my brother. I'm just trying to enjoy this season and enjoy these last few days with these guys."

Has to be one of the biggest stories to come from tonight, or the most unexpected at least. 31 years old, 9th year in the league. He has 1 year left on his 5 year deal. Cap hit next year is $13.4M. Would be a huge loss in the locker room.[/QUOTE

That guy has made the playoffs every season and if I am not mistaken, made the divisional round every year. And if the Pats win, that would be 5 Super Bowls attended and 3 rings, the last one with your twin brother. Yeah, that is a nice way to go out.

Collins would be more of a target to replace Chung and his price tag will likely be too high. He's a completely different safety than McCourty. I see them replacing, or at least trying to replace, McCourty in the draft. And that's if he's really serious about retiring after a win.

Tre Boston is a coverage safety and there is something about Boston playing in New England.

Hope he doesn't retire. He is so ****ing diverse and flexible and also an emotional leader of this team. It would be a pretty big loss.

The win/win would be to keep both McCourty's around at cheaper deals for another 1-2 years.

I could definitely see Devin, Jason and Gronk retire after this game.

He may believe that now but very few of these guys retire when they can still play at a high level and I would put McCourty in that category.

He'll be 32 in training camp and will have three rings, plus he's been named AP All-Pro three times. He might not want to risk serious injury. If so, can't say I blame him.

Can we just worry about Sunday before we worry about who's playing where next season?

DM and JM are BOTH such class acts. DM has been a great leader for so many years. He is quiet, humble and NEVER says stupid things. A great team player. DM has made a great deal of money and has given so much to the Patriots organizations and fans.
He has had numerous concussions over the years. I for one would be ecstatic for him to go out on top, hopefully with his health well preserved and most importantly no CTE.

These guys as in team personnel changes from year to year is how I take that.

I don't worry too much about who we lose ... it's mostly a game of youth anyways.
As long as Belichick is here we will be competitive from year to year.

I just know how strong of a leader he is in the locker room. What i would probably miss the most from him. SAme as when Slater goes

I don't see anything about retirement in there. He's just saying it would be the best thing imaginable to win a Super Bowl playing with his twin, and he's focused on the last week of the year. After this week, the roster will be broken up and this group of players will never be together again.

Much ado about nothing
"I don't know for sure, man. But I do look at it -- if we can win this game, winning with my brother [Jason], I don't know what else I could do that could top that," McCourty said at the interview podium on Super Bowl opening night while being questioned by Deion Sanders. "So I'm just trying to make sure I enjoy this season and enjoy these last couple days with these guys."

Who could we get to fill that spot?
Earl Thomas?
Promote Harmon?
Or will the force be strong in Obi 1
Harmon is already basically a starter (except for the AFCCG against the Chiefs apparently) so I’d assume they will draft a guy and sign a veteran starter. I don’t know if Earl Thomas would play here cheap because I’m not even sure the Pats would pay McCourty 13 mill next season if he didn’t retire.
