Who Is Sony Michel?

Do I play Sony over dalvin cook on a snap count this week?

Absolutely nothing about his ability. Seems like that might be important. I guess as long as he has a good head on his shoulders, who cares if he can play.

He is surprisingly slower than expected. There were a couple plays in the Lions game where he couldn't beat a DE to the edge. It was a surprising lack of athleticism.

I am going to guess that Sony has looked good in practices. That's why the gameplan was designed around him. However I'd like him to be less of a focus in the next gameplan and instead focus on spreading the ball around and getting Brady into rhythm first.

Once Brady is slicing the defense apart with passes, it becomes much easier to hand the ball off to Sony because they can't key against the run. If the coaches are seeing something good in Sony, that's all well and good. But we need to change things up if we're going to get this offense jump started. It should all begin with Brady, and Sony should be the bonus weapon, not the other way around. Hopefully Josh McD agrees with this idea when he comes up with the game plan against the Dolphins.

I have been wondering if they overestimate how one of our offensive players has looked in practice because they have a higher opinion of our defensive players than they should. If Sony Michel looks good in practice against the slowest D in the league, what does that mean?

Slower than what ? College ? He is coming of an injury playing vs nfl players who are faster without a pre season. And the line gave him nothing. Give him a break. Jeez.
bagging on michel when the whole team and especially the dline played like crap is just uncalled for.

Not really "bagging" on him. Just surprised he couldn't beat a DE to the edge. I'm sure in practice he can do it all of the time. Of course a tortoise could beat our D to the edge.

Michel may end up being a fine player, but his comparison as a prospect was Kamara. He simply does not appear to have that level of explosion.

once again , 2 games without preseason and injury behind terrible line play . Please wait before you declare how much explosion he has or hasn't.

You can only go by what you see. Hypothetical hope holds no present value.

Tell me who played well that night ?

I think they played about as well as their individual abilities allowed. I simply feel this team has aged and lacks a great deal of talent.

On what play did he fail to beat a defensive end to the edge? His outside runs last weekend were broken up by RJF, an under tackle, annihilating Shaq Mason, and Tavon Wilson, who is decidedly not a defensive end, going unblocked by Dwayne Allen.

If Kamara's your goal for Michel, I invite you to take a look at Kamara's stat line in his first two games as a pro. Heck, take a gander at his rushing stat line in his first two games this year.

(Interestingly, one of the things that led to up-and-down rushing games for Kamara both last year and this year is Payton's insistence on running him into 8-man boxes. Sound familiar?)

I'm not talking about a stat line. I am talking about a visual comparison of their movement skills. Michel seems much slower on the field than Kamara.

It’s what kamara does receiving that makes him special. He has 30 receptions so far. That’s 4 more than Gronk and white combined. I can’t see michel even coming close to this part of his game. That’s why I never understood those comparisons to begin with.

Michel did post Kamara-like college receiving stats his sophomore and junior years at Georgia and they have very similar physical profiles. Michel will never put up Kamara receiving stats with the Patriots because James White exists (and the Saints offense is different; Darren Sproles put up huge numbers when he was there too, as did Bush and Pierre Thomas), but his initial struggles in the passing game probably have more to do with missing camp (and Brady skipping OTAs) than anything to do with talent. Kamara also gets the benefit of Michael Thomas, who might be the best receiver in football, clearing out defenses and giving him space.

To Michel's credit, he's already accomplished in pass pro like Kamara is. On another of those few plays that didn't go to him, he had a devastating cut block on a rusher that about 95% of NFL running backs would have been run over on.

Again, Kamara didn't look like Kamara until he had several games under his belt. It's the difference between judging a player with an entire season retrospective and judging a player after two games. After two games last year, if you were a Saints fan, you would have been saying Kamara looked promising but nothing special yet - the only difference here being the round he was drafted in and the expectations that come along with it.

I love Sony Michel's first step. It's almost like an explosion happens when he's handed the ball, and he comes propelling out of the backfield. He may not have elite speed or quickness, but he builds immediate momentum on his own. I can see why they'd spend a first round pick on a guy like this.
