I actually see a bit of a distinction here. I agree Dawson (ideally) plays the STAR role, as a versatile, (sort of) in-the-box DB who covers TEs, RBs, and perhaps slot receivers at times while adding a bit of a physical presence.

I see Jones as a pure cover CB, ideally operating out of the slot. I think he's an immediate starter at the nickel CB position and has demonstrated that he could arguably be one of the better nickel/slot-CBs in the league.

My point is that I think those two positions are mutually exclusive and there is room for both of them on the field.

Considering that they did not have 1st round picks in 2016 and 2017 may have had an effect.

In 2017 they had 4 picks and did not pick until the third round (#85)

Pats fans should know by now that the draft is not the only way to build this team, we have seen alternative ways of team building for the past 19 years... when a team picks from the back of the line there is less chance of success, given the draft order they have done pretty good... SB 2 of the past 3 years...

Do not know how you can assess the 2018 draft picks at this time, at best all you can do is give the Pats an incomplete..

Dawson being on IR means his injury is worse than we'd thought.

in the words of Rocky Roccoco, "Maybe yes and maybe no."

The "severity bar" on a hammy injury is probably a bit lower for a rookie who's missed most of Camp. It comes down to having him take up a roster spot for a few weeks while healing on the bench, or giving that roster spot to a healthy player who might be useful while Dawson heals on IR.

It had been said that he'd be ready by Week 1.

Well, AFAIK, it was only reported with any certainty by the media, relying on "informed sources."

Also hurts his development since he won't be able to practice. It's never a good thing to see a rookie (or anyone) on IR.

He wouldn't be able to practice, anyway. Even on IR, he can still attend all meetings, rehab at the Pats facility, etc. Not really much different than being inactive. Agree with the second part 100%, though.

That said, the depth at CB makes this easier to deal with.

Take Brady off this Team and we are the Jets of the NFL those horrible Draft misses and BB REACH picks would have come back and bite us in the @ss. Our Player Personal Department needs a Major over haul need somebody not named BB or yess man Caserio to shop for the groceries. Also Nick Caserio is the Chris Wallace of the NFL he shouldn't have a Job. Too many misses very meager hits I don't know how anybody can Defend his track record.
