PFT Speculates Potential Demaryius Thomas-To-Patriots Trade

“Now there may be nothing to this whatsoever, but I’ve detected just a weird sense coming out of Denver as it relates to Demaryius Thomas,” Florio said in a conversation with Peter King. “He’s a guy that was drafted by [Josh] McDaniels, he’s a guy who ultimately could be available, $8.5 million. We’ve seen John Elway do this, where he’ll squeeze a guy very, very late, maybe try to trade him, and if all else fails, out he goes like T.J. Ward last year. But with the young receivers there — Courtland Sutton for example — if these guys can develop and Elway looks at it and says, ‘$8.5 million, that’s too much to pay,’ it would not shock me if a guy like Thomas ends up joining that [Patriots] depth chart. Late in the game, but still in time to make an impact for the Patriots.”

King ultimately said he doesn’t believe such a trade will happen before the season started, but he also offered a caveat.

“Nothing will shock me with John Elway at all, because I think he always does what Bill Belichick does. He’ll do what he thinks is best for the team, even if it’s a revolutionary thought,” King said.

Would BB pay him 8.5?

He’s well worth it for a year. He’s an effective route runner. He almost had 1000 yards last season with crappy QB play. This offense would be even more ridiculous than last year’s offense.

Would BB pay him 8.5?

That's $8.5M fully-guaranteed, even if he ends up on IR. The Pats have only $8.16M in cap space. There may be as much as ~$5m in LTBE incentives that they could to cover out of that, plus emergency injury-acquisitions.

Doesn't see likely unless Thomas pre-agrees to convert $7.5M to signing bonus on an extension that covers three seasons. Even so, that would lock the Pats into $3.5M for him for 2018, and costs them $5M in dead cap for 2019 if they cut him after the season.

Seems pretty extravagant.

Might work out, might not. One thing that's for sure is some sort of move would be required to create a bit of cap space.

Definitely not paying that.

Are they? Guy racked up nearly 900 yards and had 5 TDs with Semen and Paxton LOLynch throwing him the rock.

Broncos will cut him like they did TJ Ward last year. I would wait a few weeks if were BB. He would fill a big need for outside receiver.

Isn't Thomas considered "soft," in that he's afraid of contact and won't fight for the ball? Or was that someone else in Denver?

You put him on this team and the key players (Brady, Edelman, Gronk, Hightower, McCourty, Gilmore) stay (relatively) healthy, this team is a juggernaut.

Don't hold your breath on that the Broncos have a pretty slim Dept Chart at that Position as it is.

The whole premise of Florio’s speculation is that one of their young rookies will step up. They have receiver depth in Denver beyond Sanders and Thomas.

I think you're talking about someone else. Thomas has always been in on contested catches. Not sure about alligator arms over the middle though. Especially after he got cleaned out by Kam Chancellor in Super Bowl 48.

He’s a Patriots type WR. Smart, versatile, runs the entire route tree, etc. As maineman pointed out earlier, the cap hit is probably a shade too high.

If the Broncos aren’t looking good midseason or Sutton is breaking out, this trade is definitely something to watch midseason as a Talib type rental. I don’t mind the rumor because atleast he can play & is a good locker room presence (unlike Dez & other names floated).
