Still don't understand why Troy Nicklas & David Jones were released so early into camp. It's not like Paul Turner and Eddie Pleasant have better chances , or even the same chances, of making the 53 as the first two did; far from it in fact.

Jones was injured and apparently the Pats felt that he wasn't going to be able to practice or play anytime soon. He cleared waivers and went to season-ending IR, but negotiated a settlement for his release. Meanwhile, Pleasant has been a top STer and has significant experience at SS. And he only needs to be better than Jordan Richards.

With Niklas, the Pats had seven healthy TEs in Camp, but only 8 healthy WRs to take passes from three different QBs. It may have been simply a move to better balance positional depth for Camp practices. Turner, like Lucien, seems to be an obvious Camp body.

Since it was Niklas who was released from the TE roster, I'd have to guess that he hadn't shown the coaches anything more than what Izzo and Wimann have, which would mean that they classed Niklas with Izzo and Wimann as merely Camp bodies, too. There are other teams in the market for TEs. We'll wait and see how quickly Niklas gets picked up elsewhere (or IF he does). Meanwhile, one of Izzo or Wimann could make the Psquad.
