We used to consider the most valuable player to a team as being the one that would be most missed if injured.

Ignoring that definition, who would be most missed. For me, it is easy.

OFFENSE
Brady
Gronk
Mason

DEFENSE
Clayborne
Hightower
McCourty

The other way of saying this is to assess how much we lose if the backup to these players gets significant reps.

Sounds very reasonable. The offense slows down without gronk. I'm not as sure with Mason, as Brown and Cannon on the ends would allow Wynn to cover for Mason. With the loss of Amendola, I'd put Edleman on this list.

I hope Clayborn will prove to be irreplaceable in this line up without missing time to prove it. We'll see how he fits. Hightower always hurts when he goes out. I think they're counting on Shelton to be what Branch wasn't last year, so he may be more important than we think.

This is true if Valentine isn't healthy. With Valentine healthy, they have a fine 3-man rotation of biggies.

Torn between this thread and the one about getting over the Superbowl loss....

Brady then Jules

We won the superbowl without gronk for almost an entire year.

Edlemen causes just as many miss matches, and tends to be more of a chain mover, where as gronk is more of a big play target.

Hightower. I think we missed his presence on defense in the Super Bowl. We didn't have anyone at LB with his physical presence who could stop the run and rush the passer.

Brady

D McCourty
Hightower
Gronk
Gilmore

Brady
Gronkowski
Hightower

If any of those 3 go down, the team is probably finished

Brady

others : Gronk, Jules, HT, McC

DEFENSE
Clayborne
Hightower
McCourty
Offense: The obvious choice is Brady. With Hoyer at QB, it's an automatic loss. So I'll have to go with Gronk as he's the player defenses need to stop in order to have a chance of slowing down the Pats offense. He allows the WR's/RB's more room to operate.

Defense: Tough to put Clayborn on this list when he hasn't even played down for the Pats yet. And he's shown that he's not that important to a teams defense. Hightower is the pick here. He will be called upon (you'd think) to help defend the RB's in passing situations as this was a weakness all year which almost cost them the AFC Title Game and ended up costing them the Super Bowl. This will continue to be a theme with opposing teams until the Pats show they can stop it. I'd rather have Hightower rushing the passer which he's very underrated at but they don't have anybody else. Gillmore comes in at a close 2nd.

Won a SB with Gronk in street clothes.
Bad argument because they had Bennett pick up the slack. Most teams don't have a legit starting TE, the Pats had two.

Alex Guerrero

Then, Deepak Chopra.

Mason is way too high in your list. Especially when he was last seen allowing a strip sack to lose the Sb.

Clayborn? Huh? We dint even know what his role will be or how much he will play. He may not be top 10 on defense.

Well we should have won the SB without him. The receivers certainly did their part.

Opposing offenses would miss Jordan Richards
An opposing offense didn't miss Butler

#1 Brady (duh)
......
#2 Hightower - There is just no back up plan. In the end without him the D loses it's middle. People underestimate how much he means to the team when it comes being able to generate pressure cause of his own play and what he allows other guys to do around him. The DBs can still do well without him but it without Hightower the front 7 loses it's heart.
#3 Gilmore - Really it's true for all the starting CBs. If there is one weak link then nothing will work. However there is no chance to get someone to replac Gilmore where are they might have other options at other spots... maybe.

That's it. Those are the 3 they can't lose. McCourty is great but Harmon can fill in if need be. Chung is great but Harmon being in full time and extra CBs won't be bad. Flowers is good but maybe other guys can step up.

On offense as long as they have Brady no matter who they lose as long as it isn't more than 1 key offensive guy they will be able to score enough.

Mason's weakness..if any, is in PP.....he's VG on RB....

Sorry, I need to place this here.
